Powerhouse producers Valeriy Fedorovich and Evgeniy Nikishov, the creative duo behind Netflix’s first Russian original series, “Anna K,” quietly left 1-2-3 Production in early March and are now focused on their Moscow-based shingle MC2.
Though the announcement was formally made just days removed from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Fedorovich said the plan to leave the Gazprom-Media-backed production outfit had been set in motion long ago.
“When we set up our own company, it was clear that we [would] have to say goodbye to 1-2-3 Production,” Fedorovich told Variety. “We used to work for others; now we want to work for ourselves.”
As the co-heads of the Moscow-based outfit which they launched in 2018, Fedorovich and Nikishov were the creative force behind the plague thriller “To the Lake,” a series that made top 10 lists across the globe after it was acquired by Netflix, and wrapped production last year on...

Exclusive: Indie distributor The Film Arcade has acquired North American rights to distribute Small Time, written and directed by Niav Conty, and exec-produced by Oscar nominee Oren Moverman (The Messenger).

In the first episode of HBO Max’s popular series “The Flight Attendant,” Kaley Cuoco’s title character Cassie falls hard for a passenger (played by “Game of Thrones” star Michiel Huisman), gets wasted, has sex with him, and then wakes up the next morning not sure why he’s dead next to her in bed.
Cuoco, the former “Big Bang Theory” star and now an Emmy contender for “The Flight Attendant,” also produced the show. And as she revealed during a recent Hollywood Reporter roundtable, she was nervous to embark on what would be her first actual onscreen sex scene. But luckily, as the star revealed, she had help from Huisman, who is no stranger to baring it all after three seasons starring often-naked on “Game of Thrones” as Daario Naharis.
“I had never done any sort of sex scene ever, and I had one in ‘Flight Attendant’ with Michiel.

The Flight Attendant‘s titular Cassie Bowden got a very rude, and very bloody, awakening during her Bangkok layover — and with her intense reaction, HBO Max’s dark comedy truly took off.
In the minutes prior to the worst morning after ever, we got to know Cassie (played by Kaley Cuoco, also an executive producer) as a fun-loving, vodka-sipping flirt. But once she woke up in bed next to a brutally murdered “3C” (businessman Alex Sokolov, played by Michiel Huisman), Cassie’s penchant for bad decisions — as well as The Flight Attendant‘s distinctive tone — came to the fore, as...

Revered Indian filmmaker Buddhadeb Dasgupta died in Kolkata on Thursday due to kidney-related ailments. He was 77.
Dasgupta’s work was equally feted globally and domestically. Initially an adherent of the Indian realism form pioneered by Satyajit Ray, he soon evolved his own form that included elements of magic realism.
Dasgupta cut his teeth on several documentaries before making his feature film debut with “Dooratwa” (1979), which was nominated for a Golden Hugo at the Chicago International Film Festival.
“Grihajuddha” (1982) was nominated for a Golden Lion at Venice, while “Phera” (1988) was nominated for the Golden Bear at Berlin.
“Bagh Bahadur” (1989) won the special jury prize for direction at the Istanbul Film Festival, while “Charachar” (1994) won the special jury award and audience award at Fribourg and was nominated for a Berlin Golden Bear.
Dasgupta’s most lauded film internationally was “The Wrestlers”, which received considerable festival play and won him best director at Venice,...

While he earned acclaim with Lost and Beautiful, The Mouth of the Wolf, and more, Pietro Marcello received a much-deserved breakthrough with his astounding, textured drama Martin Eden. Arte France Cinéma has announced today they are backing his new film titled L’Envol (roughly translated to The Flight), which is set to star Juliette Jouan, Raphaël Thierry, Louis Garrel, and Noémie Lvovsky. Loosely inspired by Aleksandr Grin’s 1923 novel Scarlet Sails, the romantic tale will follow “the emancipation of a woman over twenty years, between 1919 and 1939, a time of great inventions and great dreams.”
With a score by Gabriel Yared, shooting is set to begin in Normandy and Hauts-de-France starting this August, so we could expect a festival premiere in 2022.

Nominations for the 78th annual Golden Globe Awards were announced on Wednesday. And with all due respect to the shows and stars popping bottles this morning, we’d like to take a minute to highlight a few names we wish we had heard.
As always, our list of “snubs” aren’t meant to slight those who were nominated — you can check out Michael Ausiello’s Snappy Judgments for his thoughts on the nominees — but rather to celebrate a few more Globe-worthy performances. With more scripted series competing for our attention than ever before, we’ve accepted that even some of...
