After starring in the comedy Vacation Friends (which I enjoyed much more than our reviewer did) and its sequel (didn’t watch that one yet) for the Hulu streaming service, Lil Rel Howery has taken the lead in another Hulu Original – but this time they switched up genres. Their new collaboration is the sci-fi horror movie The Mill, which is set to start streaming on October 9th as part of the service’s “Huluween” event. With that release date just over a week away, we’ve gotten our hands on a trailer for The Mill, and you can check it out in the embed above.
Directed by Sean King O’Grady (We Need to Do Something) from a screenplay by Jeffrey David Thomas (All American: Homecoming), The Mill sees Howery playing the role of a white-collar businessman who mysteriously wakes up in an open-air prison cell containing only an old grist mill.

Exclusive: QC Entertainment, the production company behind recent Best Picture Oscar contenders BlacKkKlansman and Get Out, has snapped up rights to J.D. Barker’s forthcoming erotic thriller novel Behind a Closed Door in a preemptive bid, with plans to adapt it for film.
The acquisition follows QC’s work with Barker on The Fourth Monkey, a show to adapt his award-winning, bestselling novel series of the same name. QC will, as in that case, produce alongside Spin a Black Yarn, which reps the writer.
Billed as 50 Shades of Grey meets David Fincher’s The Game, Behind a Closed Door introduces readers to Sugar & Spice, the latest app craze taking the world by storm, which leads downloaders Abby and Brendan Hollander into a dangerous game of life and death. When the app assigns the pair a series of increasingly taboo tasks, they soon find themselves caught up in a twisted web of seduction and violence.

While time has seemingly ceased to exist in year two of the global pandemic, we’ve had no shortage of entertainment options. More films have had simultaneous theatrical releases and digital releases and most film festivals have been hybrid this year, offering both in-person and virtual access to journalists as well as audiences. We’re hoping this trend continues in 2022 to allow accessibility to all.
With that said, 2021 has been a great year for horror. I’ve been very fortunate to be able to view and cover some truly amazing horror films this year. As the world still feels like it’s in a state of chaos, I’ve continued to turn to horror as a form of therapy. I’ve seen some fantastic horror movies and shows this year that not only provided an escape from reality, but also showcased some wildly talented filmmaking. In no particular order, the...

After a number of years in which it maybe wasn’t the case, it seems like we horror fans are continually spoiled year after year. Every December or January when it comes time to make my list of favorites for Daily Dead, I’m blown away as I look back and see just how many incredible books, films, TV shows, conventions, streaming offerings, DVDs, boutique Blu-rays – you name it – are released in a given year. Though it may have been a challenging disaster in so many other ways, 2021 was no exception when it came to horror. Here are just some of my favorites.
Chucky
As a huge fan of the Child’s Play film series – particularly some of the latter Dtv entries that have taken the franchise into bizarre and exciting new directions – I was out of my mind excited about the new Chucky TV show, which aired on both USA and SyFy.

There’s an undeniable air of unease wafting about the somewhat claustrophobic bathroom where “We Need to Do Something” largely occurs. From the opening aerial shots of the small town setting soundtracked by an ominous tornado siren to the tension present amongst the cast’s central four family members seeking shelter from the storm, it’s hard not to feel even the slightest bit uncomfortable as the old school horror font of the credits transition into a situation initially believed to be nothing more than severe weather that clearly hides something far more sinister.

Brace yourself: the Labor Day weekend box office record is about to be broken. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is the latest from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it is the rare major film to release over the famously low-grossing holiday weekend, following in the footsteps of Tenet last year and continuing Marvel’s trend of extending the length of the summer movie season. The current record holder for the long weekend is the Halloween remake, which opened to $30.6 million in 2007. Shang-Chi should be able to top that without breaking a sweat, even though it will fall toward the lower end of openings for a Marvel film.
Shang-Chi, which is the only wide release of the weekend, takes the MCU into new territory, drawing from Asian culture and cinema and featuring a cast and director of Asian origin. The title character is a star-making role for Simu Liu,...

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com audio film review on the new psychological horror film “We Need to Do Something” – featuring Pat Healy of Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theater Company – in select theaters, beginning on September 3rd, 2021.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
Sierra McCormick is Sissy, a rebellious teenager who is in a love affair with Amy (Lisette Alexis). While in the midst of texting each other, the tornado siren sounds, and her family gathers in the most secure place in the house, the fortress-like stone bathroom. The storm cuts the power and fells a tree that crushes part of the house and blocks the only escape door from the bathroom. As the family waits it out, Mom (Vinessa Shaw), Dad (Pat Healy) and young son Bobby (John James Cronin) have to stick together while strange and bloody things start to happen.

You don't need a huge budget or grand sets to make a good movie. With a little elbow grease, inventiveness, and clever writing, a filmmaker can turn the smallest movie into something grand. And it's with that spirit one approaches "We Need to Do Something," a horror film set almost entirely in one location. Horror films stuck in one locale can yield good to great results -- see "The Mist," "The Evil Dead," "Night of the Living Dead," and more. But the secret to success is to give us something to fixate on. If you're sticking all your characters in one...

Sierra McCormick in We Need To Do Something
There aren’t usually many genre films in the Outfest LA line-up, so Sean King O’Grady’s We Need To Do Something, which Max Booth III adapted from his own novel, really stood out this year. It’s the story of four people – husband and wife Robert (Pat Healy) and Diane (Vinessa Shaw), their teenage daughter Melissa (Sierra McCormick) and their younger son, Bobby (John James Cronin) – who bunker down in a bathroom for the duration of a storm only to find themselves trapped. Not only does nobody seem to be coming to the rescue, but Melissa is deeply worried about her girlfriend Amy (Lisette Alexis), and concerned that the two of them may be in some way responsible for what has happened.

Shortly after the festival, I met up with Sierra McCormick to discuss her attraction to the film and the...

Ah, this was a good scene. Here is a clip from Sean O'Grady's horror flick, We Need to do Something. In the clip Melissa and her brother, Bobby, think they're petting a cute dog that has come up to the wedged door of the family bathroom. It could be a puppy but that would not be as much fun as Ozzy Osbourne, would it? It does come with a nice bloody finish though. After Melissa and her family seek shelter from a storm, they become trapped. With no sign of rescue, hours turn to days and Melissa comes to realize that she and her girlfriend Amy might have something to do with the horrors that threaten to tear her family - and the entire...

"What if it wasn't just a storm...?" IFC Midnight has unveiled an official trailer for a mysterious new horror thriller titled We Need to Do Something, made by filmmaker Sean King O'Grady. It already premiered at Tribeca earlier this year. The concept involves a big, crazy apocalyptic storm rolling in and a family trapped by the storm in their house. But that's not it... There's some other kind of strange, evil forces lurking around, causing things to become even scarier as they remain stuck there for days. Described as a "Pandora's Box of horror" which sounds just about right, with a bit of Stephen King everyone-goes-mad storm vibes. The film stars Sierra McCormick, Pat Healy, Lisette Alexis, and Vinessa Shaw. This has some strong style with all the intimate camera shots. I dig the dual layers of intensity between the storm and the strangely terrifying things going on inside the home,...

Although we've only seen two episodes so far, FX's American Horror Stories has already given us a new iconic character in the premiere: Sierra McCormick's Scarlett, aka the Rubber Woman. The prickly Scarlett becomes one of Murder House's latest victims after her dads (Matt Bomer and Gavin Creel) buy it to flip it into an upscale haunted-house experience. After a few nights in her new home, Scarlett's dark side intensifies when she puts on Tate Langdon's old gimp suit, and she spares no one who scorns her, especially not the mean girls at school. McCormick delivers a tour-de-force performance that explores every creepy and complicated aspect of Scarlett's character. So who is McCormick, and where might you have seen her before? Here's what to know about the 23-year-old actress's impressive résumé!

Katherine Waddell, Em Johnson Launch Female-Focused Production Company First Bloom Films (Exclusive)
Director and writer Em Johnson and actor and producer Katherine Waddell have launched a female-focused independent production company called First Bloom Films, TheWrap has learned exclusively.
The company, founded in 2020, is dedicated to putting women of all backgrounds at the center of the film production process to normalize the female experience; uplift and support female voices and stories; and make room for films informed by the female gaze.
“It went without question that Em and I were going to focus on female-driven stories when we decided to form our production company,” Waddell said in a statement. “Experience informs our best work, and we knew from experience that the industry was lacking in how it treated women who worked on films in any capacity. As we move forward, we want to create a safe work environment where women can flourish in their creativity, with kindness, compassion, and the female-gaze leading the way.

Patton Oswalt is toplining and starring alongside writer-director James Morosini in I Love My Dad, a dramatic comedy that just wrapped principal photography in Syracuse, NY. Claudia Sulewski, Rachel Dratch, Ricky Velez also star along with Lil Rel Howery and Amy Landecker.
Inspired by Morosini’s real-life experiences, the pic follows Chuck (Oswalt), an estranged father who desperately wants to reconnect with his depressive son, Franklin (Morosini). Blocked on social media and concerned for his son’s life, Chuck impersonates a waitress (Sulewski) online and starts checking in with Franklin. But things begin to spiral when Franklin falls for this imaginary girl and wants nothing more than to meet her in person.
Bill Stertz and Sean King O’Grady produce for Atlas Industries alongside Dane Eckerle, Daniel Brandt and Burn Later Productions’ Phil Keefe and Sam Slater. Lauren Hantz and John Hantz are executive producers via their Hantz Motion Pictures, which fully financed.

Substitute “virus” for “tornado,” as the initial external threat and slot in “mandatory self-isolation” for “fallen tree that makes escape impossible” and it would seem Sean King O’Grady’s “We Need to Do Something” has instant allegorical relevance. It hardly takes a PhD in advanced semiotics for the pandemic-battered soul to identify with the plight of an archetypically unhappy family trapped in their bathroom while God-knows-what rages outside.
But releasing a single-location horror just as we all emerge from our own single-location horrors is a double-edged shard of broken bathroom mirror. Imagine “Sharknado” playing to an audience of marine biologists — ours are now the keen, jaded eyes of newly-minted experts in quarantine derangement syndrome. So we can’t help but see all the ways the film, which abandons allegory in favor of lurching grotesquery rather too quickly, fails to capture the actual psychological awfulness of being trapped too near your nearest and dearest,...

Every day at Pinewood Studios in London, where “Jurassic World: Dominion” just wrapped a months-long shoot that was upended by a world-altering pandemic, a voice booms over the Pa system five hours into filming to remind cast and crew members to change their masks.
“It doesn’t happen all at once, it’s not like a factory,” Alexandra Derbyshire, an executive producer on the Universal Studios film, says with a laugh. “It’s just a reminder.”
The nudge to swap out facial coverings may be gentle, but it exemplifies just how seriously films are working to prevent their sets from becoming coronavirus hotspots. As the pandemic approaches the year mark, those who make movies are coming to terms with the fact that film sets big and small will look very different for the foreseeable future.
