Exclusive: Colin Teague is signed on to direct Esaaf (working title), a debut Saudi Arabian comedy feature from local star Ibrahim Al Hajjaj and former Mbc Studios boss Peter Smith.

The film, which is currently shooting on location, follows two incompetent paramedics completely out of their depth, who unwittingly become embroiled in a kidnapping plot. It marks the debut film of Al Hajjaj’s House of Comedy and Talal Anazi’s Black Light operations. The two companies will jointly own the rights, with Smith onboard as an executive producer.

BAFTA nominee Teague is no stranger to Saudi production, having directed the Tony Jordan-penned Mbc Studios series Rashash and another big-budget Jordan drama, The Devil’s Promise two years ago. The crime drama Bergerac – a massive BBC One hit in the 1980s, starring John Nettles – is being rebooted. Here are the details.

Bergerac is back. Created by Doctor Who writer Robert Banks Stewart, the original series starred John Nettles and ran for nine series between 1981 and 1991. It became one of the biggest hits on the BBC schedules, all set on the island of Jersey.

The new version will give the show a “contemporary twist, as Bergerac is thrown into a knotty, high-stakes police investigation and challenged to his very core. He will be forced to confront his demons, while trying to save his family and career”.

The six-part UKTV Original series will be produced by BlackLight TV, part of Banijay UK, and written by Being Human creator Toby Whithouse, alongside Brian Fillis, Catherine Tregenna and Polly Buckle.

Claire Foy recently appeared on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast while on the press tour for “All of Us Strangers” and was asked to reveal the worst acting note she ever got on set from a director. She didn’t hesitate to answer: “Start acting, darling!”

“First job I ever did on TV, which was ‘Being Human.’ The pilot, with Russell Tovey and Andrea Riseborough. I didn’t know what I was doing and he shouted it at me,” Foy remembered. “It’s taken me a long time to accept that it was actually a very unkind thing to do to a 23-year-old on their first job ever.”

Foy said that “instead of taking [a newcomer actor] under your wing and helping them,” as perhaps a kinder filmmaker would do, her director was “just shouting at them in front of everyone.”

Claire Foy has revealed how the director on her first major acting job made her feel bullied.

The Emmy-winning star of The Crown said the director of the BBC’s Being Human pilot was “unkind” to her during filming on the 2008 show.

Foy did not name the individual, but Declan O’Dwyer is credited as the director of the Being Human pilot episode. O’Dwyer’s agent has been contacted for comment.

Speaking on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Foy accused O’Dwyer of giving her the “worst note” she has ever received from a director.

Foy alleged that he told her to “start acting, darling” as she shot scenes as the character Julia. The revelation drew an audible gasp from Horowitz’s audience. “I didn’t know what I was doing and he shouted it at me,” Foy remembered.

Heading into the mid-1990s, Robin Williams was one of the most bankable stars going, but he was far from infallible. So while people flocked to Williams when cast in a compelling role, they didn't turn up just because his name and face were on the poster.

So when Barry Levinson reached out to his "Good Morning, Vietnam" star to provide the filmmaker's critically acclaimed, yet low-rated NBC drama "Homicide: Life on the Streets" a bit of must-see sizzle, there was no guarantee that his guest appearance alone would bolster the series' Nielsen profile -- particularly since he was cast as a tourist/father coping with the murder of his wife. Nevertheless, the episode in question, titled "Bop Gun," was slated as the show's heavily promoted season premiere.

Exclusive: Face/Off and Hacksaw Ridge producer David Permut has acquired Steve Lillbuen’s true crime book The Devil’s Cinema about Canadian filmmaker Mark Twitchell who was convicted of first degree murder in 2011.

Twitchell is serving a life sentence for the murder of John Brian Altinger, whom he lured into a “kill room” set up in his garage-turned-film-studio. Twitchell bludgeoned and stabbed Altinger, before cutting him apart and then dumping his remains in garbage bags. His arrest and trial attracted substantial media attention since his crimes were inspired by TV series Dexter and lead character Dexter Morgan, prompting some outlets to refer to Twitchell as the “Dexter Killer”.

Game of Thrones actor John Stahl has died aged 68, his agent has confirmed.

The Scottish actor played the role of Richard Karstark in two seasons of the hit HBO fantasy epic.

Stahl’s character Richard Karstark in seasons two and three of Game of Thrones saw him take over the role from actor Steven Blount. Several of Stahl’s key scenes were shared with Richard Madden as the Houses of Karstark and Stark moved from being allies to sworn enemies.

Prior to his appearance in the show, Stahl was best known for playing Tom ‘Inverdarroch’ Kerr in the long-running Scottish soap opera Take the High Road. The actor appeared in the show from 1982 until the end of its run in 2003.

His agent Amanda Fitzalan Howard released a statement, describing Stahl as “an actor of remarkable skill and a stalwart of Scottish theatre”.

Muse Entertainment Enterprises has tapped film and TV vet Alex Jordan to serve as its new senior VP of production. Jordan, who starts on January 1, will be based in Toronto and focus on producing programming for the international market.

HBO Max has ordered a pilot for a potential “Dead Boy Detectives” series, Variety has learned exclusively from sources.

Based on the DC Comics characters created by Neil Gaiman, the one-hour series would follow the Dead Boy Detectives — Charles Rowland and Edwin Paine — who decided not to enter the afterlife in order to stay on earth and investigate crimes involving the supernatural.

Sebastian Croft and Ty Tennant are set to play Rowland and Paine respectively in the upcoming third season of “Doom Patrol,” though they are not believed to be attached to the pilot at this time.

Steve Yockey is writing and executive producing the pilot. Jeremy Carver is also executive producing. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and David Madden will executive produce via Berlanti Productions. Warner Bros. Television is the studio. No director is currently attached to the pilot. It is expected to begin shooting in November.

Exclusive: Dave Annable is joining the upcoming second season of the CW’s Walker in a recurring role. The series hails from Rideback and CBS Studios.

The reimagining of the popular CBS drama Walker, Texas Ranger centers on Cordell Walker (Jared Padalecki), a widower and father of two with his own moral code who returns home to Austin after being undercover for two years, only to discover there’s harder work to be done at home.

Annable will play Dan Miller, Denise’s husband, brimming with bravado. Dan is fiercely loyal to the Davidson family and very protective of his wife. He has taken on the Davidsons’ distrust of the Walkers and is clearly not going to settle into Austin without a fight. He’ll first appear in episode 201.

Lindsey Morgan, Keegan Allen, Mitch Pileggi, Molly Hagan, Violet Brinson, Kale Culley, Coby Bell, Jeff Pierre and Annable’s wife Odette Annable also star.

BBC exec Charlotte Moore has defended the recent U-turn to make BBC Three a linear channel once more, following its move to streaming five years ago.

For Moore, who became the BBC’s Chief Content Officer in late 2020, expanding her remit to include radio, education and children’s content as well as TV, it’s all about finding and bringing in new younger viewers.

The exec told the Edinburgh TV Festival: “BBC Three has been making some extraordinary programmes. We’ve increased the budget to make many more. We know that there is an audience in the UK that is still watching linear television. I want to make sure there is universal access to programmes for those BBC Three audiences. The young audience is the hardest to capture, with so much [alternative] choice out there – it’s really important those young audiences know what we have.”

BBC, BBC Studios and BMG have confirmed that Brit Award-winning and Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter James Newman will represent the U.K. at 2021’s Eurovision Song Contest after the 2020 edition was postponed in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. The 65th Eurovision is scheduled for May and will take place in Rotterdam.

Newman’s original entry will be revealed at a later date, and the BBC and BMG will collaborate on the track’s release with BMG handling publishing. BBC Studios will produce the U.K.’s coverage of Eurovision 2021.

Two new faces are stirring up trouble on Big Sky: Ted Levine (Monk) has joined the ABC drama in the series-regular role of Horst Kleinsasser, a “once-powerful man [who] has suffered a stroke and can only whisper, and knows he has to pass the ranch throne on to one of his children,” our sister site Deadline reports.

Additionally, Kyle Schmid (Six, Being Human) will recur as John Wayne Kleinsasser, who “has used his father’s illness to grab the reins of the ranch and steer it away from his brother Blake, the eldest son who turned his back on the family years ago.

It's only been a few months since Supernatural went off of the air, but Jared Padalecki is back with another starring role on The CW.

This time, he's taking the lead as Cordell Walker, the Texas Ranger first embodied by Chuck Norris. He is best known for that portrayal, so any reboot has big shoes to fill.

Padalecki isn't a stranger to starring roles, but he's without his long-term scene partner, Jensen Ackles. Does he do justice on his own to the Walker, Texas Ranger legacy?

The short answer is yes. Padalecki is comfortable and charming as the embattled, legendary Texas Ranger and grieving husband, Cordell Walker. He's well suited to a more adult role than he's used to playing and as someone with a family that keeps him centered.

Casting Padalecki's wife, Genevieve, as Walker's late wife, Emily, adds gravitas to Walker's pain at losing his wife, making his raw emotions more believable.

Netflix announced Sunday that it is starting development on seven new shows that will be filmed in the U.K., with Andy Serkis, Rowan Atkinson and “1917” director Sam Mendes among the attached talent.

The shows will be developed by the streamer’s vice president of U.K. Original Series, Anne Mensah and will be produced alongside upcoming seasons of shows like “The Crown” and “Sex Education.”

“Setting up a team entirely based in the U.K. was always about being able to better connect to the fantastic program makers we have here — to provide a space for writers, producers, directors and actors that feels local, friendly and familiar but also provides talent the opportunity to make shows that will impact on a global scale. U.K.-made stories really do speak to the world,” Mensah said in a statement.

Netflix has announced that it will produce seven new original scripted series in the UK, ranging from horror to science fiction, love stories to physical comedy.

All of the shows will be written and produced in the UK. The Original Series team is led by VP UK Anne Mensah.

Netflix has added seven new series to its original content slate out of the U.K., working with the likes of former “Mr. Bean” star Rowan Atkinson, Sam Mendes and Andy Serkis, along with new writing talent including Sarah Dollard and Sophie Petzal.

The shows, commissioned by the Original Series team as part of the streaming giant’s continued investment in the U.K., will all be written and produced domestically.

From Mendes and his Neal Street Productions is a six-part show called “The Red Zone,” which mysteriously teases “a comedy about football, but also not about football.” Meanwhile, Atkinson will star in short-form, 10-part comedy series “Man vs Bee,” which finds him housesitting a luxurious mansion while duking it out with a pesky bee.

Exclusive: Whalerock Industries, Lloyd Braun’s West Hollywood-based production and consulting company behind such unscripted series as Battlebots, Hyperdrive and Ravi Patel’s Pursuit of Happiness, is making a push into podcasting. The company has launched Echoverse, a first-of-its-kind podcast studio focusing on science fiction, supernatural, and fantasy audio experiences, headed by former Syfy executive Mark Stern.

The studio is funded by Whalerock, along with individual investors.

This marks an expansion into scripted for Red Arrow Studios company Kinetic, a reality powerhouse behind such series as relationship mega hits Love Is Blind for Netflix and Married At First Sight for Lifetime, both created and executive produced by Coelen.

The venture is set to focus on premium high-end English-language scripted TV series with both domestic and global appeal.

English-speaking scripted content has been important to Red Arrow’s production and distribution business, as well as German TV networks like those owned by ProSieben. Germany traditionally has been one of the top markets for U.S. scripted series. The venture also will tap into Red Arrow’s resources and Coelen and Myers’ relationships internationally.
