The untimely death of the wonderfully gifted actor Philip Seymour Hoffman led to an outpouring of warmth for the man and affection for his work all day yesterday and today. You can find the man's "best" moments from Boogie Nights, Capote, Almost Famous, Moneyball, Twister, The Master or (insert your choice here) in numerous articles (and in the actual films, of course), but I had a quick, short memory of Philip Seymour Hoffman in the excellent HBO documentary I Knew It Was You: Rediscovering John Cazale. The late John Cazale is noteworthy not only for his acting skill, but also for one truly excellent piece of Oscar trivia: all five of the films that John Cazale appeared in (The Godfather, The Conversation, The Godfather Part 2, Dog Day Afternoon and The Deer...

Exclusive: Olé, the TV production company launched in September by director Richard Shepard and producers Sean Furst & Bryan Furst, is putting down roots at CBS Television Studios with an exclusive two-year deal. The studio had been handling Olé’s development under Shepard’s overall deal there. Now the two sides have formalized their relationship with a pod agreement. Shepard, an Emmy winner for directing the pilot for ABC's Ugly Betty, most recently directed the pilot for Ringer, the upcoming CW series starring Sarah Michelle Gellar produced by CBS Studios. He also directed the pilots for the CBS Studios co-produced Criminal Minds and Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior. “I’ve had a great run at CBS Television Studios,” says Shepard. “And the fact that they are so supportive of all my interests makes continuing and expanding the relationship with our producing company Olé a no-brainer." Shepard and the Fursts met on...

"He appeared in only five movies. All five of his movies were nominated for Best Picture. He worked with the best actors of his generation. He played one of the most iconic characters in film history. Yet today, most people don't even know his name." So read the title cards that open "I Knew It Was You: Rediscovering John Cazale," which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2009 and is designed as a corrective to the mass ignorance surrounding one of most overlooked American actors of the 1970s. But does it succeed in revealing the man beneath those iconic cinematic images? Let's find out.

Before you look at today's offerings I thought I would let you know Amazon is currently offering $10 off of pre-orders of next March's release of Bambi on Diamond Edition Blu-ray. You can click here to get in on the deal.
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World I'm sorry, but I only had time to listen to half of the Edgar Wright, co-writer Michael Bacall and Author Bryan Lee O'Malley commentary on this Blu-ray and the gag reel to this point, so no full review, but this thing is jam packed with features. The Blu-ray has four commentaries, a U-Control Storyboard picture-in-picture feature and more additional featurettes than I can possibly list. You can browse the full list of features right here, but suffice to say, if you liked this film you are pretty much assured to appreciate this release. Antichrist (Criterion Collection) In all honesty,...

A look at what's new on DVD today:
"Antichrist" (2009)
Directed by Lars von Trier
Released by Criterion Collection
From its incendiary debut at Cannes to becoming a cult hit defined by the meme "Chaos Reigns," Lars von Trier's psychosexual horror film about a married couple (Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg) that repairs to a cabin in the woods to grieve over the death of their young son is receiving the Criterion Collection treatment. Video interviews with von Trier, Gainsbourg, and Dafoe, making-of vignettes and a documentary about the Cannes premiere accompany the feature. (Aaron Hillis' interview with von Trier is here.)
"The Battle of River Plate" (1956)
Directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger
Released by Hen's Tooth Video
Despite being Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's most financially successful film, it has been a rare commodity in America on home video, where people have had to buy the British...

Even as a kid I was fascinated by John Cazale -- even if I didn't know his name. I was first introduced to the performer when I watched The Godfather, and even as a 12-year-old I could tell the difference between Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) and his sad-sack older brother Fredo (Cazale). I remember wondering how Fredo could be the brother of such cool guys like Michael and Sonny (James Caan) ... and I definitely remember feeling sympathy for poor Fredo.
Then my father introduced me to Dog Day Afternoon (pictured above), which features an electric performance by Mr. Cazale, and one that couldn't possibly be more different than the role of Fredo. As Sal, the odd, sketchy, and intense bank robber, Cazale blew me away in Dog Day (and to this day it remains one of my very favorite films). Unfortunately it wasn't until I got a little older that I "rediscovered" Mr.

Due to the unending nature of real life, sequels to non-fiction films should be more common than they are. Documentary sequels do occasionally exist though, and the most necessary of these are the follow-ups to films involving inconclusive or controversial legal cases. Must-see examples include Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky's "Paradise Lost 2: Revelations" and Nick Broomfield's "Aileen: Life and Death of a Serial Killer."
We may have another to add to that group now that Oscar-winning director Roman Polanski ("Chinatown") has been arrested and faces extradition on 32-year-old statutory rape charges. Filmmaker Marina Zenovich, whose brilliantly constructed 2008 film "Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired," shed new light on the 1977 trial, has reportedly gone to Switzerland to further document the case. It's not clear if she is interested in making another feature doc or simply looking to supplement "Wanted and Desired" with new footage in the form of an epilogue.
