In the original stage play, written by Michel Marc Bouchard, the action of the play all takes place in one setting, an embalming room at the funeral home, with the four adult Larouche siblings, Chantal (Julien's wife), and a young embalmer who works in the funeral home. Xavier Dolan added the different time periods, characters, and locations in the writing of the adaption.
Writer/Director Xavier Dolan saw the original production of play at the Théâtre du Nouveau Monde in Montreal in 2019. Julie Le Breton, Patrick Hivon, Éric Bruneau, and Magalie Lépine Blondeau originated their roles in that stage production.
The series is Xavier Dolan's sixth time directing Anne Dorval. Dorval has previously acted in the following Xavier Dolan films: I Killed My Mother (2009), Heartbeats (2010), Laurence Anyways (2012), Mommy (2014), and Matthias & Maxime (2019).
The film is originally spoken in French (Québécois) and the original name of the neighbor and friend is Laurier Gaudreault. The English version change the name to Logan Goodyear, and on the title the last name is dropped.
In France, the series was re-dubbed and broadcast between January 23 and February 6, 2023 on Canal+.
