Bridgerton is one of the best shows on television right now. There's no argument there in my unbiassed opinion! I love the romance, the costumes, and there's just something so great about the Regency era that makes us all swoon and keep our eyes glued to the screen.
Unfortunately, it does take a long time for new seasons to come out, around two years per season release. And so during that long time, we definitely need something to tune in to, to fill that void. We've got your back! Here's 4 great historical drama shows like Bridgerton to watch on streaming right now.

Honestly any time I have a chance to recommend The Buccaneers on Apple TV+ on any list, I take that chance. This series is so good! While the costumes might not be as lavish as the Bridgerton ones in some ways, the...

It's been well over two years, but the highly anticipated second season of The Empress has finally landed a release date on Netflix. On Sept. 27, two days shy of the show's official two-year anniversary, Netflix announced The Empress season 2 will be released on Friday, Nov. 22. As of this writing, that's less than two months away. The wait is nearly over!
The German-language historical drama series first premiered on Netflix back on Sept. 29, 2022. In the show's first four days of release on the platform, it managed to amass over 47 million hours watched and become one of the most-watch non-English language shows. The Empress also managed to put up a good fight against the behemoth Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.
Naturally, Netflix renewed the series for season 2 in November 2022, shortly after its release. It's been a long time coming, but Elisabeth of Austria is at long last reclaiming her throne, her crown,...

Never tell a woman to calm down — and definitely not someone as spirited as Empress Elisabeth of Austria (Devrim Lingnau), who proves the adage about well-behaved women rarely making history true in the first teaser for Season 2 of The Empress.
Much like Sisi herself, the historical drama instantly captured hearts and minds across the world when it premiered in 2022. Now, the German-language series is back for Season 2 — along with plenty of palace intrigue, gorgeous costumes, and sexy romance.
“I’m incredibly grateful that we were able to touch so many different people in Germany and all over the world with our series,” showrunner Katharina Eyssen told Netflix at the time of the renewal announcement. “The story of Elisabeth’s life is a story of the power of love, but also of the courage to be different and of hope for a better future. There's no doubt that period dramas are having a renaissance and are more popular than ever. Some are based on real events, some are just inspired by them, or are a total fiction (which you can never tell).
One of the most influential series of recent times was Netflix’s The Empress, the story of the young Empress Elisabeth of Austria, who at the age of 16 falls in love with her sister’s intended fiancé, Emperor Franz Joseph, and marries him.
The love story in the series is quite captivating, but there are actually even more entertaining love stories in other period dramas. And here are 5 of them.
1. Harlots (2017-2019)
We start with a rather unlikely choice, because Harlots is not a romantic story per se, and it's not even about royalty. But like The Empress, it focuses on a woman's place in society and how hard it is to keep it.

Confirming Germany’s importance as a growth market, Netfix on Wednesday announced 17 new and returning shows and movies produced by some of the country’s leading producers, including docuseries “Kaulitz & Kaulitz,” about the Tokio Hotel popstar siblings, and sci-fi drama “Cassandra,” about an overzealous electronic household helper.

Produced by Constantin Entertainment and premiering in June, “Kaulitz & Kaulitz” accompanies Tokio Hotel frontmen Bill and Tom Kaulitz, twin brothers from Magdeburg, Germany, on tour with their band and in their new home in Hollywood.

Nico Hofmann, the long-time CEO and current chair of German production giant UFA, maker of Generation War, Deutschland 83 and Charité, is leaving the Fremantle-owned company to go solo, setting up his own production house and joining forces with long-time collaborator Jan Mojto of Beta Film.
Hofmann will be stepping down as chairman of UFA on March 1 and has signed an exclusive first-look deal with Mojto’s Beta Film, producer of Babylon Berlin, that will see Hofmann, Mojto, and Beta producer Jan Wünschmann co-produce German and European series and films for the international market.
Hofmann and Mojto have a history going back decades. The duo pioneered event television and helped elevate German drama to international prominence with such limited series, as The Tunnel (2001), The Tower (2012) and Generation War (2013). These award-winning dramas, co-produced between Mojto’s Beta and Hofmann’s UFA-owned production group TeamWorx (now UFA Fiction), were also ratings hits in Germany and internationally.

Netflix teased its slate of new European series, including Part 3 of hit heist show “Lupin” starring Omar Sy, during its showcase at Series Mania in Lille.
The standing room-only session — which featured two DJs on stage spinning tracks to a Netflix sizzle — was a “roadshow”-style presentation that featured a number of clips from the streamer’s forthcoming European shows, followed by a short panel with commissioners Katja Hofem from Germany, Damien Couvreur from France and Jenny Stjernströmer Björk from the Nordics. Each briefly discussed their new shows but didn’t go into detail about their editorial strategies.
Due to the exclusive nature of the clips, security was extremely strict at the session, with French guards shouting at delegates — including journalists — to put away any laptops and phones, making any reporting of the session virtually impossible.

After the turbulent events of Friday’s SmackDown, Undisputed WWE Tag Team Champion Jimmy Uso stood with Solo Sikoa to claim The Bloodline is as strong as ever without Jey Uso anywhere in sight. They were soon interrupted by The Street Profits, and it wasn’t long before the two tandems engaged in a pre-match brawl. In the subsequent matchup, The Street Profits used tag team precision against Jimmy. They didn’t realize, however, that Solo was actually the legal Superstar. After launching Ford off the top rope to the ringside floor, Sikoa blasted Dawkins with the Samoan Spike for the three-count.

Empress Elisabeth of Austria, a starlet of 19th-century Europe, refused to have her photograph taken after she reached her mid-thirties. It’s a detail that hasn’t been copied over to Corsage, Marie Kreutzer’s tastefully anachronistic film about the Hapsburg royal. But that absence of photos as Elisabeth aged remains central to Kreutzer’s vision. Elizabeth believed beauty was her only currency, and she would do anything to preserve it. That includes, most infamously, a tightly corseted waist that measured a mere 19.5 inches.

Netflix fans continue to flock to binge-watch “Dahmer,” the unsettling drama series starring Evan Peters as the infamous killer cannibal, in record numbers.

That means the limited series is now Netflix’s second most popular English-language series of all time in its initial release, with 701.37 million hours watched, behind only “Stranger Things 4,” which was watched 1.35 billion hours in its first 28 days. “Dahmer” has now garnered more watch-time than seasons 1 and 2 of Shonda Rhimes’ “Bridgerton” in their first four weeks on the service.

Exclusive: Netflix’s Director of Local Language Originals for the Cee, Anna Nagler, has outlined the streamer’s ambitions in region, as its biggest drama series from the region, High Water, launches globally today.
In an exclusive interview, Nagler said the streamer’s “doors are open” to creatives and their ideas in Central and Eastern Europe, as Netflix pushes into original shows from international territories despite the company’s well-documented stock price drop this year.
This comes after Netflix opened its regional Cee office in Poland this year. Since launching in Poland in 2016, the SVoD player has claimed to have invested more than 490M Pln (115M) on original films and series such as erotic movie franchise 365 Days in the country, creating more than 2,600 jobs across the production sector in 2020 and 2021.
“Opening the Warsaw office was important but also we’re getting closer to the creative community in general,” Nagler told Deadline.

Exclusive: Netflix Emea TV boss Larry Tanz has claimed the streamer is defying subscriber teething problems by continuing to grow investment in the region, standing by commitments and helping crews and talent as he prepares to welcome a wealth of prospective hits including Dark creators Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese’s 1899.
Speaking to Deadline as Mipcom approaches, the Amsterdam-based Tanz, who is VP Of Original Series For Emea, rejected any notion that Netflix’s much-publicized drop in subs earlier this year has caused a “change in direction” for his team.
“It was a good reminder that we can only continue to be successful if we are bringing the best content to our subscribers,” he said. “These headwinds are being faced by everyone. I would go further and say not only has this not caused a change in direction but we’ve instead continued growing investment, stood by commitments we...

Exclusive: Netflix has renewed German spy thriller Kleo for a second season.
The show is set in 1987 and follows East German spy Kleo Straub, played by Jella Haase, who kills a businessman in West Berlin while on a mission with a secret Stasi commando. Not long after, she’s arrested by the Stasi on spurious claims and denounced by everyone she knows. After two years in jail, the Berlin Wall falls, and Kleo is suddenly free, but she soon finds out that the conspiracy against her is much bigger than she could have imagined, and an ominous red suitcase appears to be the missing puzzle piece.
Kleo season one was unveiled on a mega Netflix Europe slate that included almost 20 projects in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, at which point the streamer committed to doubling its investment in the region to 500M Euros (482M) between 2021 and 2023. Other shows on the slate included historical thriller The Empress.
