The mutilated body of the CEO of a large butcher's business is found in one of the vats of his slaughterhouse in Lyon. It is Inspector Dupré who is in charge of the investigation. She quickly learns from the victim's wife that he had many enemies, and was not respected that much in the profession. She also learns that women and the police are not welcome at the factory, a macho world where everyone remains silent. However, she ends up discovering that the CEO was also a con man, trafficking in meat and embezzling EEC subsidies. So, a person or an organization linked to these fraudulent activities probably had an interest in seeing him disappear. Inspector Dupré will need all the precious insight of her colleagues to resolve this case.

The body of Valérie, a young worker in a lace and women's lingerie factory in northern France, is found lifeless on the beach in Calais on the evening of Inspector Beuvry's canceled wedding. We quickly learn that the young woman was living well beyond her financial means and this intrigued the police. Inspector Beuvry begins his investigation by questioning Mr. Villeneuve, the owner of the factory, but also Sandy, a colleague and the best friend of the victim, as well as Valérie's boyfriend, Pascal. Did they actually know the 20-year-old victim as well as they thought they did?

Longui, a famous Bordeaux investigative journalist in his sixties, surreptitiously meets an informant on the city's docks. In exchange for a sum of money, a sailor agrees to reveal to him information about a family of local shipowners, the Louviers, who are suspected of being involved in various trafficking. The journalist learns that a boat fishing for lobster off the coast of Senegal was there for another mission code-named "Bois d'ébène". The whole exchange between the two men is followed from afar by a hidden armed man. Later that day, the police discover journalist Longui dead in an accident. Inspector Lepont, who was aware of the reporter's research, does not believe in this coincidence and begins his investigation by visiting the docks and warehouses of Bordeaux.

While she is out fishing, Inspector Dupré discovers an injured dog by the side of the road not far from her favorite spot. She learns from a witness that the dog was just thrown from a speeding moving van and that a young man also tried to escape from it, but was kept inside. With the dog, Inspector Dupré goes to the headquarters of the moving company and only finds the injured young man there. As the dog is excitedly greeting him, he admits to owning it. At the same time, the police discover the body of an old man in an opulent villa nearby which has just been broken into. Are the two events connected and is the old man just the collateral victim of a burglary gone wrong?
