Chef and TV personality Matty Matheson never thought he would be an actor, much less one on a viral, Emmy-winning series like “The Bear.”

Matheson said during Mythical Kitchen’s “Last Meals,” hosted by Josh Scherer, that he is “very happy” his friends, the siblings (series co-creator) Christopher Storer and (series culinary producer) Courtney “Coco” Storer, “let me into their world.”

Exclusive: Pierre Morel, the veteran action director behind Taken, has been tapped to direct a feature based on the popular racing Nft Reactor Motors from the company of the same name, Deadline has learned.

Range Media Partners has signed Justin Piasecki, one of Variety’s 10 screenwriters to watch for 2023, for representation.

Piasecki broke onto the scene with his 2016 Academy Nicholl Fellowship winning script “Last Meals” (formerly “Death of An Ortolan”) which is slated to go into production soon, starring Samuel L. Jackson and Boyd Holbrook, with Morgan Freeman’s Revelations producing.

Since then, Piasecki landed three consecutive scripts on the Black List: “Relay” (formerly “The Broker”), “The Neutral Corner” and “Ballast.” Of those screenplays, “Relay” is currently in post-production. The film is directed by David Mackenzie and stars Riz Ahmed, Sam Worthington and Lily James, with Black Bear and Thunder Road producing. “The Neutral Corner,” about a district court judge who moonlights as a boxing referee, and “Ballast,” a thriller set on a cargo ship, are slated to begin production next year.

Jackson will play Walter, a disgraced former White House chef who finds himself 30 years later cooking last meals for death row inmates, forming an unlikely bond with Reed, a prisoner on a hunger strike whose innocence Walter begins to believe in. With the help of Hannah (Reilly), the trio take on a politically motivated prison head (Strathairn), while bringing dignity and hope to their fellow inmates (Rossi among others). XYZ Films has boarded worldwide sales on Sentient Entertainment’s shark thriller Alphas starring Martin Henderson and will introduce to buyers at AFM next week.

Liam O’Donnell will direct the Australia-uk co-production and Taken and District 13 director Pierre Morel will produce alongside his partners Renee Tab and Christopher Tuffin of Sentient, and Matthew Chausse and Drew Bailey.

Principal photography is scheduled to start in Australia in early 2024 on Alphas, which takes place in a quiet surfing community where killer whales are enlisted to fend off great white sharks after a series of attacks.

Not every TV and film production will stop amid dual strikes by SAG-AFTRA and the Writers Guild of America. A host of projects stopped work after writers went on strike against media companies for better pay, streaming data transparency and protections against artificial intelligence (among other issues), and many more have paused since actors walked out on July 14.

There are exceptions, however. SAG-AFTRA’s strike rules allow for work on productions covered under different agreements, and the union can grant waivers or sign interim agreements with independent productions. Jackson will play Walter, a disgraced White House chef who finds himself many years later working in a maximum-security prison cooking last meals for inmates on death row. Holbrook will play Reed, the inmate who embarks on a hunger strike on Walter’s watch. The two men form an unlikely bond which gives Walter a look into the soul of a man who is willing to forgo his last pleasurable experience in order to protest his innocence.

This is a package whose script garnered good feedback in the last couple of years but was initially impacted by the pandemic and it has now been refashioned.
