Writer-creator Joe Barton is probably best known for his work on series such as “Girl/Haji” and “The Lazarus Project,” but those in the know, know he’s almost as famous for all the things he hasn’t made but has been tapped to create. One of the hottest screenwriters in the U.K. at the moment, Barton was once tapped to be the showrunner of the Matt Reeves’ “Gotham Pd” Batman spin-off series that never came to pass, and he was one of the writers invited to pitch on the fourth season of “True Detective.” He’s written scripts for Michael Bay, has an “Amadeus” TV series in the works, and is also the writer of an untitled “Cloverfield” sequel that Babak Anvari is supposed to direct.

Keira Knightley is a spy now.

The actress will lead Netflix’s “Black Doves,” created by Joe Barton, opposite Ben Whishaw. It marks the actress’ first live-action TV role since she first rose to fame in “Bend It Like Beckham” and “Pirates of the Caribbean” as a teenager. Whishaw was last seen on TV screens on the BBC/AMC 2022 hit “This Is Going to Hurt.”

“‘Black Doves’ is a very exciting spy thriller set at Christmas in London,” Knightley said at a Netflix event earlier this year. The first season will contain six episodes, and Netflix has already renewed it for a second season (so: It sure feels like a cliffhanger is coming).

Stephen Moyer is set to star in and executive produce Art Detectives, described as an “aesthetically pleasing crime drama.” Acorn TV greenlit the series, and production is currently underway in Belfast and Northern Ireland.

Nina Singh (The Lazarus Project), Sarah Alexander (Coupling), and Larry Lamb (EastEnders) will co-star.

“I’m very excited to bring the slightly quirky Mick Palmer to life in this wonderfully creative detective series,” said Moyer. “The writing team on Art Detectives have done a great job of cleverly weaving together intriguing storylines, notable pieces of art, and a bit of history thrown in for good measure. I’m excited to lead the cast along with the lovely Nina Singh, brilliantly funny Sarah Alexander, and my dear old pal Larry Lamb.”

Turns out “The Penguin” wasn’t the only spin-off of “The Batman” Matt Reeves wanted to bring to TV. In addition to the Arkham Asylum project developed by Antonio Campos and later shelved, “Boardwalk Empire” creator and “Tulsa King” showrunner Terence Winter also had plans on collaborating with Reeves on a series focusing around Gotham City Police Department. A similar series called “Gotham” starring Ben Mackenzie as a pre-Lieutenant Jim Gordan ran on Fox for five seasons, but in a recent interview on The Playlist’s “Bingeworthy” podcast, Winter said his version would have had a period element that set it apart.

This comes as a shock to us because the six-episode first season hasn't even been released yet. It's set to come out later this year. The streaming giant announced the season 2 renewal at the Edinburgh TV Festival in August 2024.

Black Doves sees the return of Academy Award-nominated actress Keira Knightley to television. She hasn't starred in a TV show since 2011, which was the fantasy miniseries Neverland. She voiced the character of Tinker Bell. Her most recent project was the 2023 true crime film Boston Strangler, in which she played the character Loretta McLaughlin.

Per Variety, the Arkham Asylum TV series has been scrapped. The series, which was in development for Max, had been in the works for a number of years, with a handful of creatives coming and going.

When the series was announced four years ago, it initially didn’t focus on Arkham Asylum. Instead, it was supposed to revolve around the Gotham City Police Department. Terence Winter (Boardwalk Empire) was set to write and executive produce the spin-off of Matt Reeves’ The Batman, but Winter left the series due to creative differences.
