I read the original book series, and really enjoyed it. (I even have a signed copy) It's been a few years since I read them, but they really stuck with me. I'm a fan of Tony DiTerlizzi's artwork and stories.
I saw this came out and it reminded me of the books. The unique art style, the familiar yet alien designs. The surprisingly mature plot. I gotta say, this first episode is...an awkward start.
First off, the visuals. It looks nothing like the books. Which would be fine if the new style looked good. But it just looks...generic. (to be expected from Apple TV animation)
This series should've been 2D with a sort of watercolor look to it. Just, anything creatively inclined. It looks the same as that Luck movie. All the motions are a bit stiff and jumpy.
Eva's character design is generic. When I see her, I think "woman in her late 20's, potentially a warrior?"
But you tell me this is supposed to be a 16 year old girl!? One that grew up in a vault her whole life, I don't see it. Fix her hair and soften her features.
Her voice sounded over-acted and a bit flat, and sounds nothing like a teenage girl.
Muthr's design is entirely different, and they didn't even try to make her new design look good. I was excited to see Muthr's metallic face with her metal joints and gears, see her strange spindly arms. Instead she's a green emoji? Much too simple.
Most of this episode is her as a baby to kid, yelling and screaming. Then she becomes a "teenager" who also yells, and acts like a modern girl. Just a bit annoying. Feels like an adult woman trying to act "youthful" and "naive".
A lot of things are executed poorly, to a point it makes it hard to enjoy. I don't feel engrossed in the world at all.
I'll continue watching, but this first episode was very grating to watch. So far, it feels like this was the wrong studio to make this.
