Before the release, the German media, especially the news magazine "Der Spiegel", heavily criticized the movie and that director Uwe Boll didn't even contact the family members of the attack victims. It was claimed that the movie was made without their consent and that they didn't agree for this movie to be made. The mayor of Hanau released an open letter telling people to avoid viewing the movie. According to an interview with journalist Holger Kreymeier, Boll confirmed that he actually did contact the families members as well as federal education initiatives for further research and investigation, for which he also had contact emails and phone numbers. However, the family members of the victims explained that they didn't want anything to do with the movie or give any interviews or be featured in it.
