Amazon MGM Studios is developing a series version of the Tess Gerritsen novel “The Spy Coast,” Variety has learned exclusively.

The series is being developed under Amazon’s first-look deal with Will Graham and his Field Trip production banner. Graham will executive produce the project, with Lilla and Nora Zuckerman attached to write, executive produce, and showrun the series.

The official logline for “The Spy Coast” states, “Maggie Bird’s idyllic life as a retired spy in rural Maine is upended when her former agency comes asking questions about her final mission decades prior. With the help of her fellow retired spies, Maggie is forced on a globetrotting mission to discover the shocking truth behind what happened on her last mission all those years ago.”

Amazon MGM Studios has hired veteran TV executive Stacy Fung as part of its drama series team, Variety has learned exclusively.

In her new senior executive role, Fung will be a part of the team led by Odetta Watkins, head of drama, ongoing series at Amazon MGM Studios. The team is responsible for managing new and returning Amazon series such as “Reacher,” “The Summer I Turned Pretty,” “The Terminal List,” “Cross,” and more. Watkins reports to Laura Lancaster, head of co-prod television and ongoing series.

Fung joins Amazon MGM Studios from MRC, where she has worked since 2020 in the TV division. At MRC, Fung was executive vice president and head of current. In that role, she oversaw Amazon shows like “The Terminal List” as well as the upcoming spinoff “The Terminal List: Dark Wolf.” Her purview also included series such as “The Great” at Hulu and both “Poker Face” and “Ted” at Peacock.

The Wbca Showcase is a new women’s college basketball event, and the NBC Sports free channel will carry all six games.

Women’s college basketball has been steadily increasing in viewership over the last few years, thanks to superstar players like Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese. Comcast president Mike Cavanaugh floated the possibility during the company’s third-quarter earnings call with analysts.

Quarterly earnings reports often make for somewhat dry reading, but they’re still must-haves for analysts because many times company executives use them to make big announcements. Comcast president Mike Cavanaugh did just that on Thursday, using his company’s conference call to discuss its third-quarter earnings as a platform to announce that it was considering spinning off popular cable channels like Bravo, CNBC, MSNBC, and USA Network into their own business, a move that could help Comcast focus more on scaling its streaming service Peacock.

Key Details: Cavanaugh said more specifics about the plan would be available once Comcast reached “firm conclusions. The executive also said Comcast was still on the lookout for potential streaming joint ventures or other partnerships. Other media firms like Wbd have been urged to separate their cable and streaming businesses by analysts.

The NBCUniversal streamer isn’t competing with Netflix and Prime Video in terms of subscribers, but it is slowly moving toward profitability.

All of a sudden it’s late October, and for many entertainment companies that means it’s time to start reporting third-quarter earnings. NBCUniversal revealed its quarterly earnings report for Peacock on Thursday, Oct. 31, and as part of the report informed analysts and observers that it had gained 3 million subscribers, taking its new total to 36 million after ending Q2 with 33.5 million customers.

Financially, Peacock had another encouraging quarter. Its revenue brought in during the quarter was $1.5 billion, a year-over-year increase of 82%. An increase in revenue is hardly surprising, considering Q3 was the first full quarter in which Peacock's new prices were in effect, and the streamer also had the benefit of hosting the Olympics and the starts of new NFL and college football seasons.

The dinosaurs of the “Jurassic World” franchise and the hotrods of the “Fast and Furious” movies will be roaring onto Netflix in the not-too-distant future. That comes thanks to a newly expanded deal between Universal and Netflix, which will see animated movies from Universal partners like DreamWorks continue to stream on Netflix and will also include live-action movies from the studio for the first time.

The LuckyChap producer and star is set to lead frequent collaborator Emerald Fennell’s adaptation of “Wuthering Heights,” which is now officially a Warner Bros. Motion Pictures Group title. IndieWire can confirm that the studio won MRC’s highly-anticipated feature after what we’re told was “a fierce bidding war.”

As previously announced, MRC is the studio financing the film, with Robbie’s LuckyChap producing. Fennell wrote and will direct and produce the feature-film adaptation based on the Emily Brontë novel. Robbie leads the feature as Cathy, who becomes intoxicated with the brooding Heathcliff. Fennell’s “Saltburn” star Jacob Elordi is playing the iconic Heathcliff.

The film is now in pre-production, with UK shoot set for 2025. Writer/director Fennell already teased the project with an Instagram post featuring the title and the tagline “Be with me always.

Based on the novels by L.R. Wright, Murder in a Small Town focuses on Karl Alberg (Rossif Sutherland), a former big-city cop who relocates to the small town of Gibsons, British Columbia. He figures it’ll be a nice and quiet job as the local police chief only to start uncovering crimes in the town, including murder.

Alberg does get help from his fellow cops and a relationship with local librarian Cassandra Mitchell (Kristen Kreuk), who he starts dating. While it appeared the show was just a standard mystery, it’s getting attention thanks to some surprisingly high-profile guest stars.

The 90-minute premiere had Oscar nominee James Cromwell as an elderly resident who’s suspected of a dark murder.

Bye-bye, “Bad Monkey.” The comedic mystery series starring Vince Vaughn and based on the 2013 Carl Hiaasen novel of the same name is wrapping its first season on Apple TV+ on Wednesday, Oct. 9 as it prepares to go on hiatus until a new batch of episodes is ready. The media company that distributes cable packages under the Spectrum TV brand announced on Wednesday that it has agreed to a new carriage deal with NBCUniversal, avoiding a blackout of channels like NBC, Bravo, MSNBC, and USA Network. Exclusive: In what is gearing up to be an A-list pairing for Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights movie, MRC is tapping Oscar-nominated actress and producer Margot Robbie and BAFTA-nominated actor Jacob Elordi to star in the adaptation of the classic novel.

LuckyChap also will produce Fennell’s upcoming feature film adaptation based on the iconic romance novel by Emily Brontë. Besides being the studio on the project, MRC also will finance the pic.

This marks LuckyChap and Fennell’s third collaboration together, having also produced her most recent pic Saltburn and Promising Young Woman, which won Fennell an Oscar for original screenplay.

Natasha Lyonne is an actress who wears many hats — and she will soon possibly add feature film director and writer to that oeuvre.

The star of His Three Daughters, opposite Elizabeth Olsen and Carrie Coon, teased in a recent interview with the New York Times that she is working on her first movie, which she wrote and expects to helm soon. She is hopeful for the project’s timeline, especially “if we can just get me a second or third self,” she said in jest.

While the Poker Face actress, who is currently filming Season 2 of the Rian Johnson sleuth series, was reticent to share details about the pic’s synopsis, she revealed: “If you’re a dog person, then you’re going to love it, because it plays with time, just like dog years do.” (The veteran actress has a 14-year-old dog named Rootbeer.

In Azazel Jacobs’ recently released Netflix film “His Three Daughters,” an anticipatory grief hangs over the drama like a shroud falling in agonizing slow motion. This is a concept Natasha Lyonne knows well. Her own life has hung precariously in the balance on more than one occasion, with her heroin addiction in the early 2000s and subsequent open-heart surgery in 2012 well documented, but in a recent piece for The New York Times, Lyonne expanded on her understanding, describing it as something that’s much larger than just death.

Exclusive: Writer Nell Scovell (Sabrina the Teenage Witch) and former NBCUniversal content chief Susan Rovner are developing the new series The Fishbowl with CBS Studios for CBS, sources tell Deadline.

The drama is a procedural about a brilliant medical examiner overseeing a private room at the Manhattan morgue that investigates New York City’s weirdest deaths, we hear.

Scovell created the series and will executive produce with Susan Rovner through her newly minted Aha Studios banner. CBS Studios is producing.

The Fishbowl marks Scovell’s second procedural pilot for CBS. The first, Without a Clue, starred Gary Cole, Busy Phillips and Marisa Coughlan, but did not move forward to series. She also worked as a consulting producer on NCIS. Scovell is a WGA-nominated writer who is best known as the creator and showrunner of ABC’s Sabrina the Teenage Witch and has written for David Letterman, The Simpsons, Charmed and The Muppets.

Gordon have launched Winter Coat Films, which has signed a first-look deal with Sony Pictures Television to produce scripted series for streaming and cable platforms. The Oscar-nominated husband-and-wife duo have partnered with producer Dani Melia, who will serve as president of Winter Coat Films.

“Kumail and Emily are a dream team – artists who bring humanity, humor and authenticity to everything they explore,” said Katherine Pope, President Sony Pictures Television Studios. “We couldn’t be happier to support them and their newly formed production company, which we know will be hugely successful.”

Nanjiani and Gordon most recently served as executive producers on Hulu limited series Welcome to Chippendales, which earned Nanjiani an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. Peacock offered a massive amount of coverage for this year’s games, livestreaming more than 3,200 individual events and crafting the daily “Gold Zone” whip-around show to give audiences a window into the hottest action across the games each day. Analysts and observers are still awaiting concrete numbers on how many subscribers Peacock gained during the Olympics, and NBC’s media group chairman Mark Lazarus gave a small update on that figure at the Front Office Sports Tuned In summit last week.

Nielsen’s latest ‘The Gauge’ report shows NBC drawing in some good numbers for the games.

The 2024 Summer Olympics brought some highly memorable moments. From the dominance of Simone Biles to the breakdancing of Raygun and everything in between, the Paris games brought majestic and befuddling performances aplenty. But how many people were watching? New data from Nielsen’s monthly “The Gauge” report has some insights, showing that overall broadcast TV’s share of total TV viewing jumped 1.7% in August, mostly driven by the games.

Key Details: Seventeen Olympic telecasts in August garnered 10 million viewers or more. Broadcast sports program viewership was up 239% over August 2023. Peacock jumped past 2% of all TV viewing during the month, reaching a new personal best. Sign Up $7.99+ / month peacocktv.com

If the 1.7% figure doesn’t sound all that impressive, drilling down into the numbers reveals more about the dominant ratings performance NBC posted during the Olympics.

MGM+ has brought on Kelly Hughes as head of marketing.

Most recently vice president, consumer & content marketing at Peacock, Hughes oversees brand, media, and program marketing for MGM+ originals. She’s also responsible for driving consumer awareness and engagement through integrated communication plans, creative advertising, and strategic collaboration with Amazon’s cross-functional teams. She reports into Michael Wright, head of MGM+, who announced the hire in a memo to staff. Hughes began her new role on August 26.

During her time at Peacock, Hughes was instrumental in launching the streaming service, and leading comprehensive marketing campaigns for originals including Bel-Air, Poker Face, Girls5eva, The Best Man: The Final Chapters, The Traitors, Saved by the Bell, and Twisted Metal. Previously, Hughes was the marketing director, original series at Netflix where she spearheaded media and marketing campaigns for Stranger Things, Ozark, Glow, and Queer Eye.
