Art imitates life “Ray & Liz,” the autobiographical debut feature by Turner Prize-nominated artist Richard Billingham; that’s nothing new. But it’s the way art imitates, reflects and recomposes other art — specifically, Billingham’s much-discussed photography — that lends complex layers of memoir and mimesis to this singular spin on the British kitchen-sink drama, preserving both the director’s childhood and his creative evolution in gorgeous, grainy amber. Collating multiple visual and thematic preoccupations from the director’s fine-art oeuvre (notably his bleakly intimate portraiture of his working-class parents) and filtering them through the ingenious compositional eye of d.p. Daniel Landin, “Ray & Liz” is formally arresting and rigorous, though not at the expense of its direct emotional force. Commercially, this Locarno competition entry is an uncompromisingly hard sell, though festival bookings will come thick and fast.
Familiarity with Billingham’s photographic output is by no means vital to an appreciation of “Ray & Liz,...

He is best known for having a famous acting dad – Brendan – and admits he isn't classic leading-man material. But will his roles in the films Dredd and Anna Karenina change that?
On a fiercely sunny afternoon in London, Domhnall Gleeson lopes into the hotel courtyard in a blue hoodie and grey jeans, and sticks out a hand to shake mine. The cheerful 29-year-old pulls up a chair in the shade; he is pink and tall and skinny, with a shock of short orange hair in place of the lank locks worn in some of his most widely seen work. (He was Ron Weasley's scarred brother Bill in the final Harry Potter instalments, and a whimpering outlaw in the Coen brothers' True Grit.) He is well known for his well-known father, Brendan Gleeson, who makes such a feast of supporting parts that you wish he got more leads. The same can...

Irish feature 'Shadow Dancer' has been officially selected to close the 24th Galway Film Fleadh on July 15. The thriller, directed by Oscar-winner James Marsh (Man On Wire), tells the story of a female Ira-member-turned MI5 informant. It is based on a novel by ITV News' political editor Tom Bradby, and stars a number of Irish actors, including Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones) and Domhnall Gleeson (Sensation). The Belfast-based film was shot in Dublin and London last year.

★★★☆☆ If asked to name an Irish comedy from 2011, John Michael McDonagh's debut feature The Guard, starring Brendan Gleeson, would spring to most people's minds. Lesser-known Irish offering Sensation (2010) also hit our screens last year, starring Gleeson's son Domhnall Gleeson in the lead role. Whilst Sensation lacks the punch of The Guard in comparison and takes a while to get going, once writer (and director) Tom Hall's witty script is brought out by the fine, fresh cast of talent, his own debut becomes a rewarding watch.

It’s (as I’ve mentioned in the past) been a great year for Irish film, and (here I go again) it continues with Sensation starring Domhnall Gleeson (yes, he’s part of that Gleeson family). A story that follows that life of Donal who is the sole heir to his fathers farm. After his father passes away, Donal finds himself flush with cash and in between keeping his mate Karl in pints, he hesitantly phones for the services of a prostitute called Kim (Luanne Gordon). From here the story takes the occasional influence from Pretty Woman. But this is no Julia Roberts rom com, it flaunts around the whole client / hooker relationship that was so prevalent in Pretty Woman. Anyway, Kim proposes a business plan to Donal and his recently acquired wealth which would see the two of them set up their own agency. And I’m not talking about a advertising agency either.

This Competition Is Now Over. Winners Have Been Notified. Thanks to Element Pictures, I’ve got some tickets up for grabs (and yes, they’re pairs, so bring someone you like) for Sensation, starring Domhnall Gleeson (yes, his dad was a Guard). It’s for this Friday night, November 4th (opening night) in the Omniplex, Mahon Point. To be in with a chance of getting a pair of tickets, fill in the form below. Synopsis: When an Irish farmer dies, his sole heir Donal is left some land; but Donal hasn’t inherited much in terms of social skills. Despite the encouragement of his gobby best mate Karl, he finds it hard to talk to women, and in frustration turns, almost inevitably, to the Internet. He hooks up with Kiwi call-girl Kim, who harbours a business plan that would see her off her back and behind a desk, greeting punters at her own brothel.

In an interview on TV3 with Orla Barry, Irish actor Domhnall Gleeson says that he believes Irish men are sexually repressed. Greece may be on the verge of financial collapse, but that hasn't stopped its film festival from going ahead. Its artistic director hopes it may even create jobs
Reading the reports from most film festivals, it would be easy to forget that the world is in the grip of economic crisis. Brad and Angelina take their familiar spot on the red carpet in Cannes, gorgeous George beams yet again from the deck of his Venice water taxi , glamour and escapism still rule. These festivals pay lip service to the locals, but their main concern is image.

Sensation
Stars: Domhnall Gleeson, Luanne Gordon, Patrick Ryan, Kelly Campbell | Written and Directed by Tom Hall
Following the death of his father, young Donal (Gleeson) inherits the family farm. Unfortunately Donal has no interest in agriculture; moreover he is almost wholly preoccupied with the five-knuckle shuffle. With his father no longer around, Donal is driven by his loneliness, grief and near total lack of social skills to arrange a meeting with call girl Kim (Gordon). Circumstances conspire to bring the two together and they begin both a relationship and a business partnership when Kim reveals her ambition to start her own brothel.
Sensation is a very black comedy that surprises and provokes in equal doses. The central conundrum of the film that both the audience and Donal are forced to question is the true nature of the relationship between the two leads. Is Kim exploiting Donal or vice versa?...

It runs in the family, apparently, with Brendan Gleeson's son Domhnall taking up the acting mantle as the lead in Tom Hall's dark and - by the looks of things - sexually explicit dark drama Sensation. Here's the official synopsis from Tiff programmer Michele Maheux:
As is often the case with twenty-six-year-old man-boys, Donal Durkan (Domhnall Gleeson) is sexually unfulfilled. Living on a desolate farm in Tipperary, Ireland with his invalid father, he's had little-to-no contact with the outside world, let alone the opposite sex. Donal's mother passed away when he was only a toddler, and other than his dad he has one friend, Karl (Patrick Ryan), who lives on the farm, sponging off of Donal.
Boiling with lust, Donal's mind is completely preoccupied with images of the nude women featured in the pornographic magazines he keeps buried in a field next to a herd of sheep. His life is pretty uneventful,...

Rachel Weisz in The Whistleblower The Toronto International Film Festival has added even more films to their line-up today as the complete line-up was announced, which ended up causing the festival's server to crash, but I was lucky enough to get in and get out before missing out on the information.
First off, the festival's Mavericks line-up is quite interesting, which includes a series of guest presentations and this year will see Edward Norton interview Bruce Springsteen, NBA All-Star and native Canadian Steve Nash will present his hour-long film Into the Wind, Apichatpong Weerasethakul will talk with the audience as his Cannes Palm d'Or-winning film Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall his Past Lives was just added to the Masters programme, Ken Loach and Paul Laverty will be interviewed by Michael Moore on politics and cinema and Philip Seymour Hoffman will have his own panel. The sophomore film from the director of Ex Drummer, Swedish thriller Bad Faith, Pablo Trapero's Carancho (my personal favorite film from Cannes 2010), Tsui Hark's Detective Dee, Tom Tykwer's Three and a host of others populate one of the more exciting lineups for the Tiff Contemporary World Cinema Program in recent years. Here's the complete lineup:
22nd of May Koen Mortier, Belgium World Premiere
The director of Ex-Drummer returns with an artful meditation on political violence. A security guard fails to prevent a horrific explosion in a shopping mall, then lives through the aftermath as a series of overlapping what-ifs.
Africa United Debs Gardner-Paterson, United Kingdom World Premiere
Africa United tells the extraordinary story of three Rwandan children and their bid to achieve their lifelong dream - to take part in the opening ceremony of the 2010 Football World Cup in Johannesburg.
Aftershock Feng Xiaogang, China North American Premiere...

Post Production facilities Screen Scene has been very busy in recent weeks with festival work, commercials, films, television and updating their website. 'His and Hers' by Ken Wardop, which on Sunday picked up Best Feature Award at the Galway Film Fleadh, was post produced in-house at the Dublin facility. In honour of this achievement, Screen Scene are running a number of Galway Film Fleadh themed Grams to mark the festival on their website, including one with 'His and Hers' Director and Dop Ken Wardop and Michael Lavelle. The behind-the-scenes Gram can be viewed online. Tom Hall's feature film 'Sensation', which is being produced by Katie Holly and Kieron J Walsh for Blinder, is currently at the offline stage with Editor Nathan Nugent at Screen Scene. 'Sensation', which was shot in Wicklow will complete full picture and sound post at Screen Scene in the coming months.
