Ten years after the invention of the “Drunk History” format, comedian Derek Waters is reconsidering how to describe the performers who get wasted, then narrate their take on a pivotal moment in history. “I want to start calling them ‘storytellers,'” he said. “It sounds more important. I think ‘narrator’ sounds like a voiceover actor.”
Indeed, the term “narrator” doesn’t quite do justice to what intoxicated celebrities bring to the series, which returned to television Tuesday night after nearly 13 months off the air.
Tuesday’s “Drunk History Christmas Special” will be followed by the show’s full return on January 23. It’s been a long time since new “Drunk History” episodes premiered, something Waters (who co-created the show with Jeremy Konner) acknowledged. “If I was a fan, I’m thinking the show’s over,” he said. “‘I thought you were dead.’ But that’s better like that than people going,...

In a promo for Fox’s new sketch comedy program Party Over Here, executive producer Paul Scheer (The League) says he wanted to create a show “that felt like the live comedy that’s going on in New York.” Co-creator Andy Samberg probably should have informed him that there’s already a show like that, and Ariana Grande is currently hosting.

It wasn’t exactly a Super Saturday for Jonah Hill and the Not Ready for Primetime Players.
The two-time Oscar nominee (and self-described star of the Hail, Caesar! trailer) returned to Saturday Night Live for his fourth stint as host in an episode that, unlike the popular meme featuring musical guest Future, was anything but sensational.

After a monologue that made clear that he had virtually nothing to promote, Hill did very little to elevate a series of lackluster sketches focused on poop jokes and not-so-funny accents.

On the eve of its 40th anniversary special (though the anniversary itself isn't until October), what is left to say about "Saturday Night Live"? There have been multiple books written about the show, several documentaries, countless essays — riding the never-ending roller-coaster between "Saturday Night Dead" and "Saturday Night Lives Again!" — best-ofs, worst-ofs, and every other kind of list you can think of. I don't know that anything I write over the next few pages will provide new insight into one of the most influential comedy shows ever made, but I wondered if you could tell the story of the show — through good times and bad, through revolutions and evolutions and retrenchments — by looking at its sketches. I wound up picking 21 in all: some among the show's most famous, some obscure but important. These aren't meant as a definitive breakdown of the best "SNL" ever had to offer, but as a...

Actor Matt Walsh may live in Los Angeles now, but his roots in the Darien area run deep.
Local influences pop up in everything from the Hinsdale South grad's now-defunct Spike TV series Players, loosely based on Westmont sports bar Papa Passero's, to his Chicago sports-focused comedy web series, Bear Down Podcast.
Walsh, who co-founded the Upright Citizens Brigade and now stars in the HBO series Veep, which aired its season finale Sunday, is back in his hometown this weekend for a slate of family graduations. He'll be taking a timeout from the festivities to produce an episode of Bear Down Podcast at 7 p.m. Friday at The Frugal Muse, 7511 Lemont Rd. in Darien.
Patch chatted with the Darien native about his role on Veep, a pivotal performance in a Hinsdale South variety show and his fondness for Chicago's famous Italian beef sandwiches.

Exclusive: NBC’s untitled Sarah Silverman comedy pilot has cast its first 2 regulars and, like the project’s co-creator/star Silverman herself, they too are comedians-writers. Harris Wittels, who was a writer on Silverman’s Comedy Central series, will play Harris Wittels, a version of himself, in a role created for him. Also cast is June Diane Raphael whose writing credits include the feature comedy Bride Wars. The untitled single-camera comedy, from 20th Century Fox TV and Imagine TV, is loosely based on Silverman’s life and stars the comedian as Susan, a woman readjusting to the single life after a decade-long live-in relationship. Wittels’ Harris Wittels is a short, hipster, endearing and good-natured tenant in Susan’s building who happens to be a huge fan. Raphael will play Chelsea, an attractive, smart tenant in the building who was once Susan’s best friend until Susan disappeared into a relationship...

[1] You may think you've never heard of Matt Walsh, but odds are, you've seen his work before. Walsh is probably best known as one of the founders of the Upright Citizens Brigade, and he's also appeared in supporting roles in tons of films (Elf, Bad Santa, Role Models, Mystery Team, Cyrus, every comedy Todd Phillips has ever done) and television shows (Childrens Hospital, Outsourced, Party Down, Human Giant, Reno 911!, The Daily Show). In short, while he's not quite as famous as some of his colleagues, it's safe to say he has a pretty solid comedy resume. Now Walsh is taking on a slightly different kind of role: director. His first feature is High Road, a stoner comedy featuring a bevy of well-known comedians. Watch the red band trailer after the jump. High Road revolves around a drug dealer/musician with a pregnant girlfriend who's forced to run when one of his deals goes bad.

Upright Citizens Brigade co-founder Matt Walsh (Outsourced) called on a dozen of his fellow comedians to act in his directorial debut High Road, an improvised film about a weed dealer (James F. Pumphrey) torn between his "career," his musical aspirations, and his pregnant girlfriend (Abby Elliot). Hit the trailer after the jump and see how many of your favorite comedy players, including veterans of The State, Saturday Night Live, and Walsh's short-lived series Players show up in the lo-fi indie comedy. Sean Bean is set to co-star opposite Ashley Judd in ABC's action series Missing. It centers on Becca Winstone (Judd), a devoted single mom who, after her 18-year-old son disappears in Italy, takes it upon herself to travel to Europe and track him down. It soon becomes clear that Winstone is a former CIA agent who will stop at nothing to bring her son home alive. Bean will play the regular character of Becca's husband Paul, who was blown up in front of his son but will appear throughout the series in flashbacks. Bean segues to Missing, which will begin filming soon in Prague, from HBO's Game of Thrones. He starred on the first season of the fantasy series, playing Eddard Stark. James Pumphrey (Players) has been added to the cast of NBC's untitled Emily Spivey comedy pilot, an irreverent look at parenthood through the Pov of Reagan (Christina Applegate), an acerbic working mother,...

Football fans may not have the NFL this fall, but they can count on The League to help fill the void. Nick Grad, Executive Vice President of Original Programming at FX announced the day after Super Bowl Xlv they are ordering 13 episodes of the raunchy comedy centering around a close group of friends brought together by their love of fantasy football.
“We’re pleased to announce the third season pickup of The League, and are fired up to continue our partnership with Jackie and Jeff Schaffer and the ensemble cast,” said Grad in a press release. “We love the show, and the reaction the cast received across the country during their recent comedy tour is a sign the show is really building momentum.”

Matt Walsh was one-fourth of improv troupe Upright Citizens Brigade's most famous lineup -- the one with fellow comic totems Matt Besser, Ian Roberts, and Amy Poehler that fronted the '90s Comedy Central series Upright Citizens Brigade. The 45-year-old's cult hero status has led to a number of supporting roles as a correspondent on The Daily Show, bit player in The Hangover, Role Models, and I Love You Man, and star on Comedy Central's recent Dog Bites Man. Now, as Walsh's new Spike TV sports bar comedy Players takes off, he talks to Movieline about improvisation, the college experiences that led to Players, and the kind of "postmodern" comedy he finds annoying.

Spike TV has greenlighted a golf-themed pilot -- just in time for Tiger Woods' return to the spotlight.
The single-camera "Back Nine" stars "The Dukes of Hazzard" alum John Schneider as Ronnie Barnes, a hard-drinking, larger-than-life, washed-up former U.S. Open champion. He travels the country competing in small-time tournaments with Tiger, his sex-addicted longtime caddy, in order to qualify again for the PGA Tour.
Miguel Nunez is in negotiations to play Tiger in the project written by Jason Filardi ("17 Again") and Mark Perez ("Accepted").
Spike put the "Back Nine" script on the fast track almost a year ago. The sex-addict Tiger-named character was part of that early script and preceded by more than a year Woods' November car crash that opened the floodgates to allegations about his extramarital affairs. Woods is expected to publicly address those allegations for the first time Friday.
Filardi and Perez also are set...
