I’ve mentioned the short story “Snow, Glass, Apples” before – it’s both one of Neil Gaiman’s best, most pointed short pieces and one of the most successful of the Ellen Datlow/Terri Windling-inspired burst of revisionist fairy tales from the early 1990s.
As so often with successful things, it’s part of different clusters – all those anthologies of nasty fairy tales, first, and then more recently an odd program that seems to be trying to turn every one of Gaiman’s best stories into individual graphic novels. (See How to Talk to Girls at Parties and Troll Bridge ; I’m pretty sure there have been several others that I missed.)
So, in 2019, Colleen Doran adapted “Snow, Glass, Apples” (the short story) into the standalone graphic novel Snow, Glass, Apples – which is what I’ve just read. Like most of the “Neil Gaiman Library” and similar projects that I’ve seen,...

Exclusive: Peacock has put in development Pure, a one-hour drama based on Allen Salkin’s Vanity Fair article “The Runaway Vegan,” from Weimaraner Republic Pictures and Warner Bros. Television.
Written by Heather Regnier (Veronica Mars), Pure chronicles the rise and fall of the relationship between Sarma Melngailis and Anthony Strangis, two people who fulfilled each other’s desires to live in a world that existed outside of reality — which ultimately destroyed them. A tragic, twisted love story, doomed from the start.
The title of the series likely comes from Pure Food and Wine, Melngailis’ upscale New York City raw food restaurant, which made her famous. But falling under the influence of Strangis, who promised her everything, from financial prosperity to immortality for her and her dog if she obeyed him, Melngailis siphoned 2 million off her businesses and the two went on the run until they were arrested at a motel...

When she was a young girl in Gothenburg, Alicia Vikander dreamt of a life in tutus. At 15, she moved to Stockholm and attended the Royal Swedish Ballet School, where she would dance seven hours a day, six days a week. Eventually, a chronic back injury put paid to her ambitions, but not before it had equipped her for Hollywood. “I’m very good with pain,” the Oscar-winning star of The Danish Girl explains. Moments later, she rolls up her trousers to reveal a recent scar on her knee. “Skiing,” she says in a stage whisper, gesturing towards her management team across the room. “But don’t tell them.”
A high pain threshold helped the 31-year-old with the 2018 Tomb Raider reboot, for which she put on 12 pounds of muscle through weight training, rock climbing, swimming and Mma fighting. Her Lara Croft tempered being a badass with bruised vulnerability; her running, jumping...

Former How I Met Your Mother star Alyson Hannigan is set for a recurring role opposite Ryan Robbins and Alex Paxton-Beesley on the second season of Wgn America’s Mennonite crime drama Pure.
Inspired by true events, the series goes deep inside a closed, secretive subculture through the eyes of Noah Funk (Robbins), a conflicted, good-hearted man trying to protect his family and preserve his faith. Noah is a newly elected Mennonite pastor, who is determined to rid his community of the scourge of drugs and its ties to a trans-border smuggling alliance with ruthless Mexican cocaine cartels. Just when he thinks he’s won, Noah and his wife Anna (Paxton-Beesley) are thrust headlong into a desperate world of violence, greed and betrayal.
Hannigan will play Esther Dunkel, a lapsed Mennonite who is nobody’s fool and has been helping her lawyer-boyfriend funnel a fortune in cartel cash through a local bank.

NBC’s new drama “Rise” stars Rosie Perez as a high school teacher who struggles with being pushed aside when another teacher, played by Josh Radnor, makes a play for her job as head of the theater department.
Perez and Radnor’s characters, Tracey Wolfe and Lou Mazzuchelli, eventually form an alliance, for the sake of the kids hungry to be challenged by putting on an ambitious musical — but the fact that Perez’s character, a Latina woman, is passed over by a white man is extremely timely in this age of “Time’s Up” and #MeToo.
“I think for her to get passed over in the way that she was passed over hurt to her core,” Perez said of Tracey. “This was her dream to run the department. It stings that a middle-aged white guy gets the job, not the Latina woman. That’s a bitter pill to swallow.

What’s a nice Academy Award winner like you doing in an action blockbuster like this? It’s asked as a joke and Alicia Vikander smiles in response, but you're immediately aware that you’re not being nearly as clever as you think you are and that she's just being really polite. She’s been down this avenue of questioning before in regards to her reboot of Tomb Raider, but the good thing is that she doesn’t seem bothered by it at all. Alicia, who took home that Oscar for 2016’s The Danish Girl, actually sees it as a natural progression. "Any actor comes in thinking that if we're going to get the next job, whatever it may be, we’re happy," she tells Life & Style. "I love these kind of action films and to be given the chance to be part of making one has been extremely wonderful.

As the most prominent Swedish actress in Hollywood today, it stands to reason that Alicia Vikander would want to support talented Swedish filmmakers, especially ones close to her heart. Long before “Ex Machina” made her a household name, Vikander starred in two films from Swedish director Lisa Langseth, “Pure” (2010) and “Hotell” (2013). Now, Vikander is producing as well as starring (opposite Eva Green) in Langseth’s English-language debut, the ominous and lush “Euphoria.” In the newly released first trailer, full of lush greenery and ominous tensions, “Euphoria” could be a stunner.

The dream team of Alicia Vikander and Eva Green united for Euphoria, the latest drama from Vikander’s Pure and Hotell collaborator Lisa Langseth. Also starring Charlotte Rampling, the story follows the emotional journey of two sisters. Following a premiere at Tiff, no U.S. release has been set yet, but it’ll arrive in Sweden in Norway early next year, and now the first full trailer has landed.
“Predictably, Vikander is wonderful, believable, and agreeably upset as Ines,” Christopher Schobert said in his review. “This is another fine performance from the star who is often the best thing in flawed dramas like The Danish Girl and The Light Between Oceans. Green is saddled with the drearier role, the “other sister” who is deeply ill. The Casino Royale star is far more effective when she plays a character in control of the situation. In Euphoria, things are beyond her grasp,...

What’s worse than giving sex to a married man for money? Giving it for love. It’s a tough distinction to delineate for a reformed twenty-year old prostitute whose only role model growing up was a drug-addled, suicidal mother that more or less taught her the business. Hoping for redemption and a ‘cleaner’ life, Katarina (Alicia Vikander) has vowed to never go back and instead cherish her boyfriend Mattias (Martin Wallström)—the one decent male in Sweden who doesn’t yell whore at her on the streets. Unfortunately, while the purity of one’s soul and a genuine hope for love is nice on paper, finding it quickly after the hardships endured from her past is unrealistic. She is too susceptible to kindness; too willing to believe anyone outside of her suburban slum is good. While the title may be Till det som är vackert [Pure], the lead character is anything but.
