The Gerard Butler-starring Greenland (2020) sequel, Greenland: Migration, sold to STX at the 2021 Cannes virtual market in a deal worth $75 million in July 2021. The sequel was originally announced in June, with Butler and co-star Morena Baccarin confirmed to return and original director Ric Roman Waugh also attached.
Unlike the previous movie, this film is released by Lionsgate. Greenland (2020) was released as video-on-demand by STXfilms (it hadn't premiered on US theaters due to pandemic).
Including this movie, it marks the fourth collaboration between Ric Roman Waugh and Gerard Butler. Previous works include Angel Has Fallen (2019), Greenland (2020) and the upcoming Night Has Fallen.
Filming took place in Alton, Hampshire, UK, in May 2024. The Market Square, and some of the town's roads and parks, were closed and given a post-apocalyptic makeover.
Hilary Swank was considered for undisclosed role.
