August continues with one more franchise film that stands the best chance at making money before the month ends. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
It has been 45 years since filmmaker Ridley Scott first got attention with his horror-sci-fi film “Alien” and seven years since his last movie in that franchise, 2017’s “Alien: Covenant.” Sir Ridley is still involved as a producer with “Alien: Romulus,” the first movie produced under 20th Century since being bought by Disney. For this latest reboot, they’ve brought on Fede Álvarez, best known for the “Don’t Breathe” movies and the 2013 remake of Sam Raimi‘s “Evil Dead.”
It’s been a long time since Sigourney Weaver‘s Ripley was leading these things, but for this one, they’ve brought on Cailee Spaeny of “Civil War” and “Priscilla,” as well as Isabela Merced from “Transformers: The Last Knight” and “Dora and the Lost City of Gold.

“Playmobil: The Movie” will make box office history, but certainly not in the way it intended. Stx’s animated adventure generated less than $1 million despite launching in 2,337 North American theaters and now stands as one of the worst opening weekends of all time.
“Playmobil” scraped together just $668,000 over the weekend, marking the third-lowest debut ever for a film that was playing in over 2,000 locations. The only movies to suffer worse fates were 2012’s “The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure” and 2008’s “Delgo”.
North American theater chains and regional venues offered the film for $5, significantly less than the average ticket price in U.S. of roughly $9. Children’s tickets can run up to $15 in major markets like New York or Los Angeles. But even heavily discounted prices weren’t enough of an incentive. Since it’s already a competitive time of year for moviegoing, the studio will struggle to hold...

It's last call for several horror films, including "The Silence of the Lambs" and the "The Omen" trilogy, which are leaving Netflix in December.
Also going bye-bye: Both versions of manly tearjerker "Brian's Song" and classics including "All About Eve" (1950), "The Great Escape" (1963) and "The Hustler" (1961). And if you want to stream '80s favorites "The Dark Crystal" (1982) or "Labyrinth" (1986), better get on that before December 1.
Here's what's leaving Netflix in December 2015.

Happy 77th birthday to one of our favorite actors, Christopher Lloyd!
The actor, who's played some of filmdom's most beloved characters, including Doc Brown in "Back to the Future," Professor Plum in "Clue," and Uncle Fester in the "Addams Family" films, was born on October 22, 1938 in Stamford, Conn.
Partly because of his height, and partly because of his manic intensity and commitment to even the wildest characters, he's portrayed a series of eccentrics, from mad scientists to aliens; had an impressive, award-winning theater career; and will always be remembered as Reverend Jim on "Taxi."
In honor of his 77th birthday, we've come up with 75 reasons why he's so awesome.
1. He's played a Klingon, a cartoon, the Wizard of Oz, an angel, a leper, and a geriatric vampire.
2. He stands an impressive 6'1."
3. Because he's so tall, he had to hunch over to appear in the same frame with "Back to the Future...

New Indie of the Month On your shelf of Contemporary Classic Bad Movies, make room alongside The Room, Birdemic, Miami Connection and Ben & Arthur for The Oogieloves in The Big Balloon Adventure (Lionsgate), a mind-bending kiddie romp that’s perhaps most famous as the lowest-grossing wide release in cinema history. “But it’s a children’s film!” I imagine some of you yelping. “It’s not fair to hold it to the standards of more mature fare.” Here’s the thing: even by kids' movie standards, Oogieloves goes into areas of crazy hitherto unexplored. Whether it’s the array of name stars (including Cloris Leachman, Chazz Palmintieri, Toni Braxton, Cary Elwes, Christopher Lloyd and Jamie Pressly) embarrassing themselves...

A film that you probably weren’t aware even existed, starring Lindsay Lohan, Michelle Rodriguez, and Adrien Brody (the man has an Oscar, remember?) and directed by Vince Offer — a.k.a. the ShamWow/Slap Chop infomercial pitchman (and occasional prostitute beater) — just had one of the worst box office debuts since The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure.
The movie, called InAPPropriate Comedy, earned $172,000 from 275 theaters this weekend, yielding a wretched $625 per-spot average. There were a whole lot of bad movies last year, but after all the votes were tallied and the industry grudges settled, Hollywood officially named the worst film of 2012 yesterday at the 33rd annual Razzie Awards — and "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2" was the clear winner loser, earning Golden Raspberries in seven categories including Worst Picture.
But was it really the worst film of the year?
It's clear that the people voting for the Razzies thought so. Besides Worst Picture, "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2" also won for Worst Actress (Kristen Stewart), Worst Director (Bill Condon), Worst Supporting Actor (Taylor Lautner), Worst Screen Ensemble, Worst Rip-Off, Remake or Sequel and Worst Screen Couple for the admittedly creepy pairing of Mackenzie Foy and Taylor Lautner.

Los Angeles — The "Twilight" team finally has earned some love – or loathing – from Team Razzies.
"The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2" was picked as last year's worst picture Saturday by the Razzies, an Academy Awards spoof that hands out prizes for Hollywood's lousiest movies on the eve of the Oscars.
The finale to the blockbuster supernatural romance dominated the Razzies with seven awards, including worst actress for Kristen Stewart, supporting actor for Taylor Lautner, director for Bill Condon and worst screen couple for Lautner and child co-star Mackenzie Foy.
Adam Sandler was named worst actor for the raunchy comedy "That's My Boy," his second-straight win after 2011's "Jack and Jill," which swept all 10 Razzie categories a year ago. Pop singer Rihanna won worst supporting actress for the action dud "Battleship."
"Twilight" movies had been well represented in Razzie nominations over the years but had not won any key awards there.

All around Hollywood, the movie industry’s best and brightest are preparing for the year’s biggest awards bonanza — a starry, starry night of designer dresses, well-deserved wins, and touching acceptance speeches.
But as exciting as the Independent Spirit Awards may be, they can’t hold a candle to the Golden Raspberry Awards. Since 1980, this off-brand ceremony has rewarded the best in bad film, giving cinematic trainwrecks like Mommie Dearest, Howard the Duck, Showgirls, and Battlefield Earth the dishonor they deserve. The films in contention this year may not be quite as terrible as those that have won in years...

This weekend, an annual event will spotlight the worst in cinema from last year. No, I'm not being super cynical about the Oscars. The 33rd Golden Raspberry Awards (or Razzies) are also being held, and it should be a bittersweet affair given that it's the last time its voters get to nominate a Twilight movie for anything. Well, until they the series is rebooted or the year 2020, when they can include the whole Twilight Saga in the Worst of the Decade categories, whichever comes first. Contending for Worst Picture this year are The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 2, Battleship, That's My Boy, A Thousand Words and The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure. The last of these is part of a problem we could have with the Razzies, because obviously it...

At the very least, give producer Kenn Viselman some credit for his grip on reality. "You don’t have to be delicate," he says, inviting honesty about his recent failure in the same way a sickly person might joke about his or her own illness to break the tension around cautious friends. "Don’t worry. I’m just giving you permission, you don’t have to worry about the politics of it." And so, here is the blunt truth: Viselman's kiddie film, The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure, had one of the worst opening weekends of all time last September, opening to

Have the Golden Raspberries become as predictable as the Oscars? Mark looks over this year's nominations...
The beginning of the year in movies is typically dominated by awards season, and with this week's announcement of the Academy Award nominations on both sides of the pond, (the BAFTAs on Wednesday and the Oscars on Thursday) there's no shortage of articles about apparently egregious snubs. Only eight BAFTA nominations for Skyfall? No Best Picture nomination for The Impossible? Like a song by Journey, it goes on and on and on and on.
It's less frequent that you see people complaining about the snubs at the Golden Raspberry Awards, (or Razzies) the cheekily counter-programmed ceremony that names and shames the worst films of the previous year. If you're unfamiliar, you might remember Sandra Bullock's crazy weekend in 2009, where she pulled off the impressive feat of winning the Razzie...

Hotel Transylvania
Directed by: Genndy Tartakovsky
Cast: (Voices of) Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, Steve Buscemi, Cee-Lo Green, Fran Drescher
Running Time: 1 hr 34 mins
Rating: PG
Release Date: September 28, 2012
Plot: Protective daddy Dracula (Sandler) tries to kick out a nosy human (Samberg) who accidentally walks into his hotel for monsters only, and also falls for his vampire daughter Mavis (Gomez).
Who’S It For? For all of you families considering a trip to ol’ Hotel Transylvania, beware: a field trip 200 miles through a flaming minefield to a second-run theater playing ParaNorman would offer a more fulfilling movie-going experience. More specifically, this is for kids who are enabled in their junk food addictions.
Expectations: With roles in movies like Zookeeper, Sandler is not good at voice-overs, and with a movie like Jack and Jill he is certainly not very good at family comedies. As for the director, this is Tartakovsky’s first debut,...

This Weekend’s Winners: After years of laboring in the shadow of zombies and vampires, the Dibbuk finally gets his due: Sam Raimi’s presentation of the low-budget (just $14 million) horror film The Possession carried the year’s traditionally most anemic holiday weekend with $21.3 million. Meanwhile, the Shia Labeouf Prohibition-era action film Lawless produced respectable numbers for the Weinstein Company, finishing second with $11.8 million. This Weekend’s Losers: The $60 million independent animated film The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure has achieved a distinction no film ever wants: At a mere $445,000 through its first three days and with approximately $600,000 through Monday, its 29th place opening also marks the single worst wide-release debut ever. (On the upside, it relieves 2008’s execrable Delgo of that honor, no doubt to the unending relief of Freddie Prinze Jr.) How It All Went Down: As the U.K.’s Guardian newspaper rightly points out,...

Let me be upfront: I haven’t seen The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure yet. Of course, you probably haven’t either, as it just had the worst opening weekend in box office history.
But I sort of want to. Somehow, the film earning that dubious distinction has unleashed an alarming obsession within me for all things Oogieloves in the last 24 hours. I mean, have you Seen Oogieloves.com?! The sheer Wtf factor of this strange, strange franchise is utterly intoxicating. And Oogieloves filmmaker Kenn Viselman seems to indicate that this might be exactly what he was hoping for.

On a Labor Day weekend in which Warner Bros.' "Dark Knight Rises" crossed the billion-dollar mark in worldwide grosses, "The Avengers" hit $1.5 billion and the exorcism saga "Possesson" finished No. 1, the buzz was about the historic pratfall of "Oogieloves," which posted the worst box office opening ever. An independent animated kids film, the $55 million "Oogieloves" took in $448,000 from 2,160 screens between Friday and Sunday, a $207 per-screen average. That's even lower than last year's "Creature," which average $217 on 1,507 screens. It also made for some seasonal symmetry:...

Also, there's our Ultimate Slash Madness Tourney to check out. The second round of voting is opened over the weekend. We'll be back full strength tomorrow!
PETA is slamming Rihanna and Lady Gaga over their wearing of fur and animal skins. “Wearing reptile skin is creepy and callous, and it makes her look even more out of touch. She and Lady Gaga seem so desperate to be freaks instead of recognized for their talents that you have to wonder if they realize that they are being laughed at.” Oh, PETA, I think you continue to mistake where that laughter is directed.
You have 11 lives. Use them well.
Possession led a weak holiday box office with $20 million, followed by Lawless with $12 million.

While we wait for the Labor Day weekend numbers to come in, there are three box office milestones to report on. First, "The Dark Knight Rises" broke the $1 billion mark. Many thought it wouldn't be possible, especially with a lower-than-expected opening and the Colorado massacre. But Christopher Nolan's third Batman film did it, now standing at $1.005 billion. And on top of that, it also surpassed "The Dark Knight" ($1.003 billion) to become the highest-grossing installment in the trilogy. "The Dark Knight Rises" is only the 13th film to break the $1 billion mark. Meanwhile, "The Avengers" was released in 1,700 theaters over the weekend, giving the film a push strong enough to have it cross the $1.5 billion mark. That's an incredible accomplishment, but it's still the third highest-grossing movie of all time, behind James Cameron's "Titanic" ($2.2 billion) and "Avatar" ($2.8 billion). Finally, on the other side stands "The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure,...

This Labor Day weekend has been one of both big and small box office numbers. On the one side, there's The Avengers, which broke the $1.5 billion mark. On the other, there's children's film The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure (from one of the geniuses behind the Teletubbies), which earned just $207-per-movie theater it opened in — the lowest haul in history. Meanwhile, Prohibition-era Lawless (featuring Jessica Chastain and Shia Labeouf) came in second place with $12 million, while the Exorcist-inspired horror flick The Possession opened first at $20 million (we think it was all Matisyahu's doing.) And, speaking of $20 million: that's about how much Dinesh D'Souza's conservative "documentary" 2016: Obama's America has earned so far.

Remember last weekend when I speculated that the box office failure of horror movies released in August/September 2011 might be repeating itself this year? Never mind. Turns out it was just a case of either nobody wanted to see The Apparition or they were all waiting for The Possession.
The Labor Day weekend is typically a low grossing period for the box office, which is why the Sam Raimi-produced exorcism flick The Possession scoring a $17 million opening can be considered a huge success. According to Box Office Mojo, it should do just over $21 million for the four-day holiday, making it the second highest grossing Labor Day weekend opening, second only to the $30+ million taken in by Rob Zombie’s Halloween in 2007.

Fortunately, almost every movie at the box office did better than The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure did this weekend!
Scaring up better-than-expected numbers, Lionsgate’s $14 million horror entry The Possession topped the box office over Labor Day weekend with a strong $17.7 million from the Friday-to-Sunday period. The studio expects that the film, which earned a “B” CinemaScore grade will earn about $21.3 million through Monday. The picture yielded a sturdy $6,294 per theater average from 2,816 locations.

Grosses for Labor Day weekend are about even with last week’s as well as the same as last year (always the weakest holiday), led by overperforming Lionsgate horror entry "The Possession," hitting the youth crowd, while Weinstein's "Lawless" is delivering at expected levels with a discrete older audience. Several other films are holding well, as some ticket buyers catch up on films they missed while glued to the Olympics. Overall, the numbers are not discouraging heading into what is usually a slow period. Of note, far below the Top 10, is the possibly record-breaking low performance far a wide release. The indie animated film " The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure" opened Wednesday and grossed an incredibly low average of $207 per screen in over 2,100 theaters. That averages out, kids' ticket prices factored in, to fewer than 30 patrons per theater for the entire weekend. With a reported combined production and marketing.

That’s it, folks: summer is officially over. At least across the pond, where the three-day Labor Day weekend means that the tent poles have been packed away and awards season is kicking off. Though the final figures won’t arrive until Tuesday because of the holiday (and news is predictably slow), new horror arrival The Possession comfortably won the weekend with a $17.7 million opening.Lawless also managed to do decent business, snagging a second place launch with $9.6 million in its moonshine fund and plenty of cash to spend on Hardingans. With just two new wide arrivals hitting the top 10 (new kids’ movie The Oogieloves In The Big Balloon Adventure failed badly with $448,000 despite opening on 2,160 screens), The Expendables 2 was down in third with $8.8 million, while The Bourne Legacy sank to fourth and $7.2 million. Not all Americans are spending their Labor Day weekend watching college football or hitting the beach one last time. Some of them — a modest number — are heading to the movies, too.
Haunted horror film The Possession topped the box office on Friday with $6.1 million and should easily win the holiday weekend with about $20 million in four days. The Lionsgate release, which stars Kyra Sedgwick and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, will be the first horror film to top Labor Day weekend since The Final Destination in 2009.
The Weinstein Company’s Lawless found a more modest $2.8 million on Friday, and may gross about $11 million by Monday.

I am taking a small vacation over the course of this three-day weekend and so your Friday box-office update is going to be a short one though I will dedicate a little more time to the Sunday morning one. That said, Deadline has the early estimates and it doesn't look like this is the way the studios wanted to end the summer with The Possession topping Friday with a decent $6.1 million on its way to a $14-15 million weekend. That's all fine and dandy for a PG-13 horror movie Lionsgate didn't even screen for critics all over the country and only cost $14 million to make, but yikes, the rest of the field isn't too pretty. Lawless managed only an estimated $2.8 million and it's in second and could potentially slide to #3 behind The Expendables 2 and your new titles end there with the rest of the lot is made up of limited releases.

Lawless opened on Wednesday to mixed reactions and a strong opening. The Possession, the Sam Raimi produced film looks scary and intriguing which has the potential to draw out a huge crowd more so than the R rated Lawless, directed by John Hillcoat. Those are the only films vying for the top spot this weekend. Yeah, sure, For a Good Time, Call..., The Tall Man, The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure, and Celeste and Jesse Forever will debut in a limited theatrical run or open slightly wider, though none will leave a mark.

It's the last week of August, and as per usual, Hollywood has another mediocre horror movie waiting in the wings. Lionsgate and Sam Raimi will be hoping that The Possession fares a little better than last week's disastrous The Apparition, and since it is based on a tried and true premise, it probably will. Meanwhile John Hillcoat's Lawless is shaping up to be only slightly more attended than his last film The Road, and the movie that could actually steal the weekend is the "interactive" kids flick The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure. In select theatres, keep an eye out for Mads Brugger's latest political prankster doc The Ambassador, R-rated comedy For a Good Time, Call..., and the latest film from the director of Martyrs, The Tall Man. As Summer 2012 officially comes to an end over Labor Day weekend, it looks like the box office draught is likely to continue. The only movie with real breakout potential is Lionsgate's supernatural thriller The Possession, though it's lacking the Christian iconography or found-footage style that tend to drive the most successful entries in this genre. Lawless and Oogieloves In The Big Balloon Adventure already opened on Wednesday and showed their limitations: Lawless should wind up somewhere between $13 and $15 million by Monday, while Oogieloves will be lucky to crack $2 million. Finally, 2016 Obama's America is expanding again following an excellent weekend, though it's unlikely that it winds up near the top of the box office.Produced by horror maestro Sam Raimi, The Possession was originally scheduled for Halloween 2011 with the title Dibbuk Box before eventually getting a more generic title and a bump all the way to the final weekend of August...

"The Oogieloves In The Big Balloon Adventure" is not like ordinary movies. Aimed strictly at children ages 3-5, the newly released kids' film from Kenn Viselman, the man who brought "The Teletubbies" and "Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends" to American audiences, is an interactive experience.
"Oogieloves" -- which includes cameos from stars like Chazz Palmentieri, Christopher Lloyd and Cloris Leachman -- "features visual and auditory cues which invite the audience to 'move' the action along, allowing parents and kids to interact not only with the characters, but also with one another," reported the Sacramento Bee. The problem? So few people attended "Oogieloves" on opening day that audience members were likely talking to themselves.
