Evergreen, Always Bill
Recorded after his triumphant left-field win on long-running TV dancing competition Strictly - and those feeling that Bill's newfound mainstream appeal would have dampened or limited his comedy need fear very little. In fact this sprightly (and record-breaking) performance at the beautiful Royal Opera House is a revelation - his usual versatile grab-bag of musical dalliances, silly tangents and occasional politically charged jabs feels fresh as a daisy to me and he even includes some of his new-found fancy footwork to cement his status as LORD OF THE DANCE. The "he endures" vibe was further emphasised for me by his confident re-staging of some ancient jokes from the halcyon Part Troll years. The only mark against it is some clumsy cuts in the editing which jar the momentum slightly (although likely nothing more sinister than keeping it an hour for broadcast) - here's hoping this lovely night gets a proper uncut release at some point.
