Mary Queen of Scots’ “Reign” on The CW is coming to an end. After four years of tumultuous romantic entanglements and court intrigue, the network’s underrated soapy historical drama is set to air its series finale, which will conclude the story of the young Queen of Scotland (Adelaide Kane). Ahead of Friday’s finale episode, TheWrap caught up with Kane and showrunner Laurie McCarthy to share a few memories of living in an Irish castle, which even more scandalous romance never came to fruition and which former cast mates they would have liked to bring back one last time.

The CW has a lot to think about as it heads into midseason.
With most of their shows down in the ratings, there's pretty much no guarantee that every show will make the cut for another season.
Previously, the network has taken great pride in renewing pretty much everything, but that will probably change this season.
It's worth noting, when considering these figures, that The CW is currently averaging a 0.54 rating among adults 18-49 with original programming.
The CW announced in advance that Reign would conclude this Spring after four seasons. It's crazy they did not just announce the final season back when it was picked up, but at least fans can take solace in knowing they have another season with Mary Queen of Scots.
Frequency and No Tomorrow end their freshman runs in January and there's a good chance that neither will be back.

Mary Queen of Scots has been dethroned.
Reign, a fictional tale about the young Mary, her turbulent time in France and steamy love love, will conclude on The CW after its upcoming fourth season, scheduled to begin on Friday, February 10, 2017.
When Reign Season 1 first began, it was pretty popular here at TV Fanatic.
The story may have been fictionalized, but it was compelling and sexy. There were thrilling scenes that set the water cooler abuzz at work the next day. Sexy King Henry became a thing.
Who doesn't love a love triangle? Future King of France Frances and bastard Bash both loved Mary and would go to any lengths to have her, even betraying each other on their way to the throne.
By Reign Season 2, it was all about Mary and Frances and building their life together, fighting for the throne against outsiders who thought Frances weak and worthless.

As Mary Queen of Scots struggles to repair her life on "Reign," she's found herself growing closer to a man who isn't her husband -- Sean Teale's Conde.
While Mary spent much of Season 1 coming to the decision that she loved Francis the most (over his brother Bash), she's finding herself drawn into another struggle of the heart as Season 2 continues. This time, however, it's with the younger son of her husband's rival family.

Along with the derivative plot drama, these costumes make waves all on their own with intricately-embroidered bodices, haute couture including Alexander McQueen gowns, lust-worthy fur stoles, and custom designs that?d make Mary Queen of Scots roll over in her grave.

Casting Harry Potter had to have been a little bit like playing Russian Roulette. You’re bringing in a group of largely untested child actors, and praying to the Cinema God that not only will they commit to an eight film series, but that they’ll grow into talented individuals and not get beaten by an ugly stick on their way through puberty. They dodged a bullet with the main trio, with Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint all turning out perfectly fine. They’ve got good heads on their shoulders and seem remarkably mature in their ability to pick roles that will work for them as adults.
But what about the rest of the cast? Because they weren’t just casting Harry, Ron, and Hermione — they had a school full of students to fill. So what happens to the actors who are part of such a huge franchise,...

Our International Sales Agent (Isa) of the Day coverage resumed for this year's Cannes Film Festival. We feature successful, upcoming, innovative and trailblazing agents from around the world (during and after the festival) and cover the latest trends in sales and distribution. Beyond the numbers and deals, this segment will also share inspirational and unique stories of how these individuals have evolved and paved their way in the industry, and what they envision for the new waves in global cinema.
Picture Tree Films is an international sales and production company based in Berlin, and was created by Andreas Rothbauer and Alex Schulman in 2013. It had its first market presentations at Berlinale, as well as Cannes 2014. The years of experience in the film business and resourcefulness of this duo has enabled this relatively new company to ignite with full power, including numerous films launching with international releases and festival premiers, including Metal Head (Us release by Cinelicious Pics), Mary Queen of Scots (Us release by Mousetrap) , Victor "Young" Perez (Us release Synkronized), West (Us release Main Street Films) and the German blockbuster Fack Ju Goehte (Suck Me Shakespeer), which grossed 80 Million dollars at the German box office alone and will see its first international release in France, Italy, Spain, Eastern Europe, the Commonwealth of Independent States. and South Korea this fall.
nm2526725 autoAndreas Rothbauer[/link] shares Picture Tree's success, his experience, and his take on the transition and evolution of functionality in the industry.
Please share an overview of Picture Tree.
Picture Tree Films started over a year ago, and it's an integrated model of both production and sales. We've been developing our sales operation over the last 14 months, while at the same time allocating coproduction projects - our goal is two per year, and we primarily focus on English language projects, with countries like Canada, South Africa and Australia/New Zealand that fall under the respective coproduction treaty with Germany.
On the sales side, we do about 10-12 films per year. It's a mix of World Cinema and some German films with a crossover potential. With the coproduction projects that will also be sold by Picture Tree, we are also planning to complement our line-up with English-language films. In this respect, we're not restricted geographically.
My background is in sales and financing. I joined Beta Film (one of the biggest European television distributors and a former part of Kirch Media) in 2000 to build up their theatrical label Beta Cinema, and left to start Picture Tree in mid 2012.
Most of our films from the Berlin market will be released in the Us, like West (to be released by Main Street Films), Metal Head, which will be released by Cinelicious (a post production house that has worked with great talents, including Richard Linklater - learn more at Deadline Hollywood) and Raven Banner in Canada. Mary Queen of Scots will premiere at the MouseTrap Festival this year, and Synkronized (a company which falls under Millennium in North America) has picked up Victor "Young" Perez.
Upcoming titles of Pti that will launch at this year’s summer and autumn film festivals include A Hitman's Solitude Before the Shot, Therapy For a Vampire, Chrieg - At War, Pause and Mammal.
Where does your inspiration come from?
I grew up in a fairly small town, and after school when our parents were still at work, we would cruise around and hang out at the local cinema - the cinema was our babysitter. We befriended the older girls who worked there, and they let us watch as many films as we could. Film was a window into another world - geographically, culturally, but also psychologically and emotionally. It was eye opening to see people with similar troubles... as a kid, you think you're alone, and then suddenly things change when you see that other people have the same issues on the screen. Film can be healing in this way.
I was a journalist, a critic, and a film researcher. Early on, I was trying to be a director, but I figured out that all the people around me in film school were way more talented than me. I knew about the rest of it though - so I went on to find another way to be in this business.
I found that it's important for me not just to be on the content or creative side, but also to understand how films mechanically come together. It allows me to be in touch with both worlds, and it involves creativity as well.
What are you noticing about the latest trends in the industry and what's on the horizon?
This business is in a transitional period, and, more and more, I see distributors becoming content creators and producers. Smaller, more flexible units are starting to emerge, rather than the older, heavier business structures. I see more strategic alliances between companies without merging, and they're completely keeping their branding and functionality, which typically got lost in the big mergers of the past. It's about collaboration and smaller entities that need to have and retain their own specialized logic without having to compromise it because of corporate alliance.
Now is about being able to respond to all these new challenges, whether it's budgets, or new ways of distribution. Is it a film that goes theatrical everywhere, or does it have to go another route? Does it go straight to television or VOD, or will it be a day-and-date? Is it something that combines several different types of distribution? These are the questions we have to ask ourselves on regular basis.
Despite all the technological advances we're seeing in production and distribution, the physical experience of human interaction is necessary in film sales & distribution - there's nothing like looking each other in the eye and closing a deal, and this is why festivals and markets like Berlin, Cannes, Tiff or Afm will never disappear. They still fulfill an integral function, and it still comes down to this to make it happen.
Some people have criticized sales agents for trying to produce as well, and that the creative side of film is not their place. What's your take?
You have to make the right alliances with people. I don't think that a sales agent can't identify a good script, and there's no exclusivity for producers. We're all sellers in the film business. It's a big chain of selling, and it's how films get made. For us, it's like mixing the expertise of physical production with the expertise of financing and distribution with a fast moving and flexible business structure. From a content or creative point of view, I don't think that everybody can judge a script, but no one really has any exclusivity for judging it, better or worse. It’s mainly about people looking at it from a different angle with a different interest.
It is necessary that distribution and content creation come together, as integrated units, but every unit has to have its own logic. Otherwise, the whole decision-making process can become slower, and decisions can be compromised. The independent film business has become more competitive and fast paced, while the bottleneck of distribution has become tighter for various reasons. In that respect, it's always better that you create alliances, but without interfering with the logic of the others.

Hercules is a story that is in desperate need of a retelling, right? Apparently so, as at least two different Hercules themed movies are being released within a year of one another. My only hope is that the Dwayne Johnson starring vehicle will be at least entertaining, where as The Legend Of Hercules 3D is a headache in a bottle. I’m surprised that this was a widely released theatrical affair, to be honest. I’d never even heard of the film until Jeff went to see it at the theater, and came back with reports of its awfulness. I find it odd, as much time as I spend on a daily basis, on social networking sites, and other various corners of the internet, that I didn’t even see one advertisement for this film. Hercules came and went at the box office, debuting on its opening weekend at the #3 spot,...

Mary Queen of Scots has let Queen Catherine's fear of Nostradamus' prophecies steer her away from marrying Francis -- the man she's been betrothed to ever since they were children -- right into his half-brother Bash's arms, changing the line of succession for the French crown along the way. The King, angered by all of Catherine's plotting and scheming, found her guilty of adultery and treason, and her execution is looming. Basically, everything's a mess at the French Court on The CW's "Reign."
That's why mama's coming to town.
On Thursday (March 6) night's all-new episode, "Consummation," Mary's mother Marie de Guise (guest star Amy Brenneman) arrives at the French Court to clean up Catherine's mess and get her daughter married to the next king of France -- but will that be Bash or Francis?
Brenneman isn't spilling. "Mary looks super pretty in the episode," Brenneman tells Zap2it coyly. "I can't tell you,...

Hadrian's wall, Culloden, the poll tax, Jacob Rees-Mogg: yes, England has inflicted an awful lot of angst and pain on Scotland down the centuries – but, look, we still don't want you to leave
1 Sorry for calling every last one of you "Jock". We now know it's offensive, especially if you're a woman.
2 So sorry for the years of heartless Conservative governments that you never voted for that ripped the heart out of the Scottish mining, steel and shipbuilding industries, butchered public services and imposed an unwonted, dismal neo-liberal ethos on a land to which such a callous political and economic philosophy was inimical.
3 And for making you guinea pigs for Margaret Thatcher's disastrous poll tax, inflicting it on you a year before England and Wales, and then – somehow! – forgetting to backdate the rebate for the tax when it was abolished in the early 90s.
4 Sorry for the 1746 Dress Act that banned tartan,...

Let me tell you a not-so-secret secret: Catherine, and her portrayer Megan Follows, is the true Mvp of the show. Adelaide Kane is a fantastic lead and Mary Queen of Scots is a likable and interesting teenage royal. But Catherine, and Megan Follows, makes this show spin on all wheels, cylinders, or other spherical objects.
Except, tonight might just be too much. No, excuse me. It is Way Way too much.

Talk about a game-changer -- in the course of one episode, "Reign" has now gone from a story about Mary Queen of Scots and her fiance, future king of France Francis, to a story about Mary and her fiance, future king of France Bash, the king's illegitimate son.
"For King and Country" caught up with Mary and Bash as they were fleeing the castle. Despite their best efforts, they were quickly captured and bought back home.
Meanwhile, back at the castle, the king realized that Catherine was partially behind Mary's disappearance and forced her to confess why she had a hand in breaking Mary and Francis' engagement. She didn't tell him the truth about the prophesy, just that there would be destruction.
When Mary and Bash returned, Francis told Mary he loved her and knew his had a hand in her leaving. The king was more harsh, telling Mary she...

Just because Francis, the future King of France, and Mary Queen of Scots got married in real life doesn't mean it's going to happen on The CW's "Reign." Creator Laurie McCarthy teases that the love triangle between Francis, Mary and Francis' illegitimate brother, Bash, will only get juicier as Season 1 continues.
"You can read in the pages of history that two people got married and they were royals and it was an arranged marriage, and we have no idea what kind of marriage that was -- whether it was a marriage in name only or whether it was a true marriage," McCarthy tells Zap2it. "One of the things we tried to set up in the pilot is that Henry's true wife was actually Diane de Poitiers. It turns out in a business sense, in a partner sense, his true wife was Catherine de Medici. So that's what we're looking at.

Where’s Nostradamus when you need him? A major character was killed on the Dec. 12 midseason finale of The CW’s Reign – and we did Not see this one coming. It looks like we’ll have quite a bit of mourning to do between now and the show’s Jan. 23 return!
‘Reign’: XXX Dies On Midseason Finale
That’s right, the unfortunate victim on Reign‘s chopping block turned out to be none other than Aylee (Jenessa Grant), easily the most adorable lady in waiting of all time.
Considering the episode was titled “Fated,” we figured something monumental would go down, but this seemed beyond the realm of possibilities. It gave us a real ‘no one is safe’ kind of feeling, and that’s not one we like to have.

Critics are complaining about ‘Bonnie & Clyde’ occasionally straying from the history books — but should that really matter?
HollywoodLife.com is loving Emile Hirsche and Holliday Grainger‘s new Bonnie & Clyde miniseries — which concludes its two-night premiere Dec. 9 at 9 p.m. on Lifetime, A&E and the History channel — but sadly, not every critic is being so kind.
E! Online points out that, among other things, the outlaws’ biopic is being slammed for its historical inaccuracies. This version makes it seem like Bonnie got Clyde mixed up in a life of crime, when in reality, he already had a criminal history when he met her.
The Boston Herald also took particular issue with Clyde’s visions of his impending demise, which obviously never happened.
'Bonnie & Clyde' Promo Take Our Poll Does Historical Accuracy Matter?
Here’s a question: Given that we’re talking about television shows, which are made — first and foremost — to entertain viewers,...

Lesbian drama release a bold move given anti-gay legislation in Russia.
Stacie Passon’s lesbian drama Concussion is among four titles acquired by Russian distributor Cinema Without Borders (Kino bez Granits) at this year’s Afm for theatrical release in Russian cinemas in 2014.
The other titles acquired were:
Don Coscarelli’s black fantasy comedy John Dies At The EndLucky McKee and Chris Sivertson’s horror film remake All Cheerleaders Die, andAustralian Zak Hilditch’s apocalypse drama These Final Hours
According to Cinema Without Borders, the latter two titles are expected to be given a wide release.
The acquisition of the 2013 Teddy Award winner Concussion would seem particularly brave given the current anti-gay mood in Russia since the introduction of legislation earlier this year banning “propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations among minors.”
Despite anonymous “telephone terrorism,” bomb threats and harassment by the police, the sixth edition of St Petersburg’s Bok o Bok (Side by Side) Lgbt film festival...

Thus far on "Reign" our young heroine, Mary Queen of Scots (Adelaide Kane), has only had to contend with her future mother in law. But that'll change when "Private Practice" star Amy Brenneman joins the cast as Mary's mother, Marie de Guise.
Mary and her mom, the acting regent of Scotland, will reunite when Marie heads to French Court to visit her daughter after spending years apart. Marie and Queen Catherine de Medici (Megan Follows) of France, mother of Mary's fiance Prince Francis (Toby Regbo), will clash when they both conspire to for their own benefit.
"We've been waiting for just the right moment, and the actor, to introduce Mary's mother - the complicated and fascinating Marie de Guise," executive producer Laurie McCarthy said in a statement. "In a time when women held very little power, Marie ruled a nation under siege. Amy Brenneman's talent, strength and beauty illuminate...

So far on "Reign," The CW's sexy retelling of the story of Mary Queen of Scots, Mary's affections have been directed towards Prince Francis, the man to whom she's been engaged since they were children. But on Thursday's (Nov. 14) episode, "A Chill in the Air," the love triangle promised on the show's posters finally comes to fruition and her flirtation with Francis' illegitimate half brother, Bash, gets very real.
"Mary's whole life has been about being engaged to Francis," star Torrance Coombs, who plays Bash, tells Zap2it. "She always knew he was the man she was going to be with so she's told herself she loves him and all these things. They actually do seem to have a connection. But then she and Bash share a moment and she suddenly starts to wonder what the other possibilities are, maybe kinda sorta. Certainly something that previously seemed unattainable for Bash suddenly seems like 'Oh,...

The CW has picked up its three freshmen series, the network announced this afternoon. The Originals, The Tomorrow People, and Reign have all earned a full first season. The Originals is a New Orleans–set spinoff of The Vampire Diaries and seemed like a sure thing out of the gate, while The Tomorrow People, about a race of super-humans being chased by the government, and Reign, a sexy teen history of Mary Queen of Scots, were perhaps more of a gamble. As it turns out, they all pull pretty similar numbers. TV is not perfectly predictable!
