TV’s mockumentary genre has taken on the doldrums of office life (“The Office”), the intricacies of blended families (“Modern Family”), and the fundamentals of elementary schools (“Abbott Elementary”). But now, NBC is about to go where no series set in the comedy verite format has gone before: a hospital. “St. Denis Medical” will premiere on November 12 on NBC and will stream later on Peacock. Watch the trailer above that introduces the medical characters played by Wendi McLendon-Covey, David Alan Grier, Allison Tolman and more.

It came with a small pay bump and a large responsibility bump.” Tolman is a prior Emmy nominee for “Fargo” (2014) who most recently was seen on television shows like “Shining Vale,” “Gaslit,” and “Why Women Kill.”

It’s been quite a long wait, but the Television Critics Association’s annual TCA Awards returns to an in-person event this year for the first time since 2019. After the Covid-19 pandemic and last year’s Hollywood strikes turned everything virtual for five years, the 40th annual TCA Awards takes place at the Langham Pasadena on July 12, during the half-way point of this summer’s TCA press tour.
And looking to get things back on track is host and critics’ fave Wendi McLendon-Covey.
“No pressure,” she jokes. “But my God, it’s going to feel good to actually get to be in person again have that return to normalcy. I love the TCAs, I love meeting everybody. Maybe I’m a nerd, but I’m looking forward to it.”

Niecy Nash-Betts took home her first Primetime Emmy Award on Monday, and the five-time nominee took the opportunity to celebrate herself for the milestone achievement. Up top, the actress thanked God for “this divine moment;” then Murphy, Netflix, the Academy voters and her wife, Jessica Betts. But then, it was time for some self-love.
“And you know who I want to thank? I want to thank me for believing in me and doing what they said I could not do,” the actress said during her acceptance speech. “And I want to say to myself in front of all these beautiful people, go on girl with your bad self. You did that!”
Nash-Betts won the prize in the category of Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series, for her performance in Ryan Murphy’s “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.” Starring alongside Evan Peters, Nash-Betts plays Dahmer’s suspicious neighbor,...

By now, actress Niecy Nash-Betts has more than proved that she can excel in genres other than comedy. A quick look at her past Emmy nominations say as much, with an Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie nod for “When They See Us,” Ava DuVernay’s poignant limited series about the Central Park Five, listed right next to an Outstanding Television Movie nomination as an executive producer of “Reno 911!: The Hunt for QAnon.”
Yes, she can perform it all, but what her work on “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” proves is that Nash-Betts has the ability to elevate projects in a way where one could argue they would not work without her. Playing Glenda Cleveland, the titular serial killer’s next-door neighbor who desperately tried to alert authorities to Dahmer’s evildoing, only to be belittled and dismissed.

Three decades after they were first introduced in the short film “Frog Baseball” and almost a dozen years after the first revival of their eponymous MTV show concluded, cartoon characters Beavis and Butt-Head returned for a Paramount Plus reboot series in August 2022. Whether it will continue past its first two seasons has yet to be decided, but it certainly has been well-received, as was the 2022 TV movie “Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe.” At this point in the “Beavis and Butt-Head” franchise’s existence, no entry has ever attracted the attention of Emmy voters, but the time is right for that to change.
“Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe,” which dropped on Paramount Plus six weeks before the new series premiered, serves as a sequel to the 1996 theatrical film “Beavis and Butt-Head Do America.” The plot revolves around the titular teenage dullards traveling through time and coming into contact with...

Dolly Parton’s Mountain Magic Christmas (NBC)
Earlier critic-proof Dolly Christmas specials were nominated in 2017, 2020 and 2021 (2021’s won). Given her popularity (there’s a reason her name is in the title), this one, shot at Dollywood with Willie Nelson among the guests, should wind up with a nom, too.
Prey (Hulu)
The fifth installment of the Predator franchise, a $65 million prequel, debuted at Comic-Con, registered at 93 percent on Rt and attracted more views in its first three days than any other Hulu offering ever en route to best TV movie Critics Choice and Producers Guild noms.
Reno 911!: It’s a Wonderful Heist (Comedy Central)

TV Academy… please don’t let Beverly Goldberg leave this world without an Emmy nomination.
If one asked Wendi McLendon-Covey how she created the lovable and zany mom from “The Goldbergs,” I’d imagine she’d use one of the overbearing matriarch’s famous lines delivered to a random stranger regarding the origins of her three children: “I made these people. Me. I made them with my body.”
With an undeniable “schmoop” factor and countless “huggies,” McLendon-Covey made the unapologetic “smotherer” with her body, heart and soul. Her phenomenal work in the ABC comedy series will surely be one of the finest in sitcom history, and we’re all the better for it.

The holidays are sizzlin’ in “Reno 911!: It’s a Wonderful Heist,” a Christmas-themed sequel to the Emmy-nominated “The Hunt for QAnon.” Can the Reno Sheriff’s Department score another bid for Best TV Movie?
Jim Dangle (Thomas Lennon) is bemoaning his rotten luck – and Matt Damon’s Crypto.com ad – when Terry (Nick Swardson) arrives in the form of an angel to show the downtrodden lieutenant what Reno would look like had he never donned his iconic hotpants to patrol its streets. After delivering on the reference to Frank Capra’s 1946 classic, “It’s a Wonderful Heist” “unloads the funniest, weirdest gags that [Kerri Kenney-Silver] and Lennon can devise without resorting to cheap gimmicks, like character development or narrative tension,” writes Matt Schimkowitz (The A.V. Club).

Hot on the heels of a Critics Choice Award win and Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations, Niecy Nash-Betts is now the odds-on favorite to take home the Best Limited Series/TV Movie Supporting Actress Emmy for “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.” But will she, if nominated, be able to sustain her momentum all the way through the end of voting in late August? Her trajectory could be similar to that of the reigning champ in the category, Jennifer Coolidge (“The White Lotus”), who also prevailed for a buzzy show that came out very early in the Emmy cycle after landing bids at all winter awards but only triumphing at Critics Choice.
The uncanny similarities between Coolidge’s and Nash-Betts’ trajectories begin with “The White Lotus” and “Dahmer” both being first installments of anthology series that seemingly came out of nowhere and not only became hot...

Can Daniel Radcliffe earn an Emmy nomination for the comedy film “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story”? Or even win? The Roku film, a parody of music biopics, is an unconventional awards contender — after all, it satirizes a certain kind of awards bait movie project. But it could also be noteworthy by bringing awards attention to the underappreciated telefilm format.
As limited series and anthologies have taken precedence in the industry, TV movies have mostly been pushed aside at the Emmys. Consider that last year’s five nominees for Best TV Movie — “Ray Donovan: The Movie.” “Reno 911!: The Hunt for QAnon ,” “The Survivor,” “Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas,” and ultimate winner “Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers” — had no other nominations in any other categories.
That’s a far cry from just a few years ago. Consider that just in 2013 “Behind the Candelabra” swept the Emmys with 11 wins including Best Miniseries or Movie.

While Evan Peters is getting praised by critics and viewers (and deservedly so) for playing serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer on Netflix’s “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” I wanted to shine an awards spotlight on another cast member who gives the best performance of her career: Niecy Nash. The actress plays the true hero of the story, Glenda Cleveland, who is frequently ignored by the authorities when she alerts them about the frightening happenings in her neighbor’s apartment.
“Glenda was one of his victims, too, and her story has been told the least of these,” Nash declares in a Netflix interview (watch below). Glenda repeatedly complains about the foul odors coming from Dahmer’s apartment, and dials 9-1-1 multiple times after hearing screaming and drilling coming through the vent. Sadly, if the cops had listened to her from the get-go, many of Dahmer’s future victims would likely still be alive today.

In total, the series won six of those categories. "Squid Game" made history as the first non-English series to score a nomination in the main drama category, and though it didn't win, the show did take home six awards. Emmy’s Outstanding TV Movie category this year featured one traditional awards film, Barry Levinson’s harrowing WWII tale The Survivor for HBO, joined by four followups to canceled series, Disney+’s Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers, Showtime’s Ray Donovan: the Movie, Paramount+’s Reno 911!: the Hunt for QAnon and Roku’ Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas.
In the end, it was the movie sequel to the oldest series in the bunch, the 1989-90 Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers, that took the trophy. The film, which mixes CGI and classic animation with live-action, became the first animated flick to win the storied TV movie category in its 56-year history. It also handed Disney+ its first Emmy in a top program category. The streamer previously won the Pre-recorded Special Emmy for Hamilton and Documentary or Non-fiction Series for Secrets Of the Whales last year.

Disney+’s Chip ‘n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers has won the 2022 Emmy for outstanding television movie, which was handed out at the second Creative Arts Emmys presentation Sunday night.
“This is not the place I thought we would be, but we don’t get here without many, many people,” said producer Todd Lieberman, who noted that the idea couldn’t have happened “without [the] bizarre and brilliant minds of our writers.” He also noted director Akiva Schaffer.
The hybrid live-action/computer-animated comedy took home the top prize in a category that was likely the biggest wild card of the season, which saw four feature spinoffs of television series — Chip ‘n’ Dale, Ray Donovan: The Movie, Reno 911!: The Hunt for QAnon and Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas — face off against HBO’s somber Holocaust drama The Survivor, which the cabler acquired following its world premiere at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival.

After struggling the past couple of years with Emmy campaigning in virtual lockdown, and with no in-person events or Q&As allowed by the Television Academy, things have gone back to ‘normal’. The pandemic protocol meant the 20,000-some voters in the Academy were relegated to participating in virtual online sessions where the opportunity for networking and word-of-mouth was greatly reduced.
This season, however, it was back to old times, with the shackles taken off studio and network consultants in terms of bringing voters out of the house and back into the swing of the very long TV season. Still, we saw the nominations tend to favor a handful of shows, and all those contenders associated with them, in a very big way. So, the campaigns didn’t really widen the field in a way the Academy might have hoped they would. For instance, nominations leader Succession saw a whopping 14 of their actors nominated,...

One year ago, the team behind NBC’s “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” was devastated when the broadcast network pulled the plug on the musical series after two seasons. At the time, the show’s cast, as well as creator Austin Winsberg, were vocal about how sad they were about the untimely end; after pitching it around and hoping for a pickup, it seemed to be dead in the water.
And then the Roku Channel came around and offered a chance to wrap it up in the shape of a movie; the two-hour holiday pic focused on the Clarke family’s first Christmas without patriarch Mitch (Peter Gallagher), who died at the end of the first season.
“We had ended Season 2 on a massive cliffhanger, but we had many new stories we still wanted to tell,” says Winsberg. “To be able to create a resolution, give the fans clarity and live with...

The 74th Emmy nominations were announced on Tuesday, July 12 and included some shocking surprises in the mix. “Pam and Tommy” slipped into the Best Limited Series race over front-runners like “Maid” and “The Staircase.” And we should have never counted out Emmy favorite Sarah Paulson, who earned her eighth nomination for portraying Linda Tripp in “Impeachment: American Crime Story” despite ranking 17th in Gold Derby’s odds.
“The White Lotus” was expected to earn a bid for Best Limited Series and mentions for several featured players but we didn’t predict the huge windfall that included Sydney Sweeney, Natasha Rothwell, Steve Zahn and Jack Lacy.
Below, see the Top 30 biggest jaw-dropping nominees that weren’t expected to show up according to Gold Derby’s odds. Did we leave anyone out? Let us know by sounding off down in the comments section.
