In 1947, after listening to stories about how pre-Columbian South Americans may have crossed the Pacific Ocean to settle in Polynesia, Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl (Pål Sverre Hagen) sets out on a balsa raft they named Kon-Tiki from Peru to Polynesia to determine whether or not it was possible. Along with him go five crewmen—Erik Hesselberg (Odd-Magnus Williamson), Torstein Raaby (Jakob Oftebro), Knut Haugland (Tobias Santelmann), Herman Watzinger (Anders Baasmo), and Bengt Danielsson (Gustaf Skarsgård).
The non-fiction book Kon-Tiki (1948) is an account of author Thor Heyerdahl's 1947 expedition. The screenplay for the movie was written by Norwegian writer Petter Skavian with Scottish screenwriter Allan Scott as a consultant.
Approximately 4,300 miles (6,900 kilometers), depending upon the Polynesian island in question. Kon-Tiki landed on the Raroia Reef on the Tuamotu Islands.
That was a whale shark (Rhincodon typus), a filter feeder that eats mainly plankton and small fish.
While it's true that waves come in "sets", the number of waves within a set is dependent on numerous variables such as wind gusts, fetch length, swell focus, and bathymetry, with the prevailing winds probably playing the biggest role. Consequently, wave sets can occur in numbers as low as two waves per set to 13 waves per set or even higher.
The voyage took 101 days. The Kon-Tiki left Peru on 28 April, 1947 and arrived in Polynesia on 7 August, 1947.
The Kon-Tiki raft makes it over the Rariola reef. Thor, having fallen overboard, wades to the shore, followed by the others. Listening to worldwide radio news of their landing, Thor stands on the sandy beach looking out at the sea. The final scenes are snapshots of the real Kon-Tiki explorers and a postscript that describes what happened to them after the voyage. Bengt fell in love with Polynesia. In fact, he never let. He settled there and became the Swedish counsel general. Erik loved the raft so much that he finally built his own sailboat and lived on it as an artist for 11 years.Torstein continued his daring life as an adventurer. He died in 1964 in an attempt to reach the North Pole on skis. Knut resumed his career in military intelligence. He also became one of the driving forces in creating the Kon-tiki museum.Herman made a contribution to the study of oceanography by traveling the world as a minister of fisheries for the United Nations. Thor Heyerdahl wrote a book about the Kon-Tiki expedition. It has been translated into more than 70 languages and has sold more than 50 million copies. The documentary he made about the journey won the Academy Award in 1951. Thor Heyerdahl has been credited with inspiring a new generation of adventures after the tragedy of World Wor II. He and the Kon-tiki crew have been cited as giving rise to future pioneers, including the test pilots who first led the way into space. Thor Heyerdahl went on to lead the first expediition to Easter Island. He continued to better mankind through science and exploration up until his death at the age of 87.
