With recent examples like Housebound, What We Do In The Shadows (review), The Devil's Rock and Black Sheep, it's clear that New Zealand is quickly becoming a hotbed of quality quirky genre films. How much of that is due to the direct influence of Peter Jackson and his earlier output like Bad Taste and Dead Alive (aka Braindead) could be up for debate, but when it comes to writer/director Jason Lei Howden's feature debut Deathgasm, there is no question. Howden cut his teeth doing visual effects on many films for Weta Digital, including as senior paint artist on two of Jackson's Hobbit films. But it's his love of practical [Continued ...]...

If you haven't yet seen The Devil's Rock, a WWII-based horror film that marked the feature debut for New Zealand director and Weta Workshop special effects artist Paul Campion, you've missed a dark, gruesome and intense tale that feels like it's torn straight from the pages of the classic horror comics... although it's actually based in part on historic events, along with some chilling occult lore. Here's the trailer: I was introduced to Campion recently (by Bane of Yoto author Josh Viola), and I found out he's got tons more amazing horror projects in the pipe – most notably a feature adaptation of Brian Keene's acclaimed horror novel Dark Hollow. Naturally, I had to learn more about that, as well as Paul's amazing short films, and he graciously offered us the scoop. Fearnet: For those who haven't yet seen The Devil's Rock, can you explain the genesis of that project?...

First it was summoned, now it demands to be satisfied. Today trailer is for a new indie horror from the UK called Dark Hollow, the next film from the creator of last year's horror The Devil's Rock. Adapted from author Brian Keene's Dark Hollow, the horror film is about a writer who discovers an "unholy evil dwelling deep in the forest: a satyr - a supernatural half-man, half goat creature, hellbent on protecting itself and spreading it's seed." Director Paul Campion used to work at Weta, and he got them to help work on the creature effects for this film, which there's a very brief hint of in this teaser trailer (via Twitch). Take a look! Watch the first teaser trailer for Paul Campion's Dark Hollow, originally from Bloody-Disgusting: Set in a small Central Pennsylvania town that borders a woodland with a sinister reputation, Dark Hollow sees women beginning to disappear.

New Zealand director Paul Campion won himself a lot of fans around the world a few years back with his absolutely fabulous short film Eel Girl, success he built into his debut feature The Devil's Rock. And now Campion is working towards his sophomore effort, an adaptation of Brian Keene's novel Dark Hollow. When local women in a rural Pennsylvanian town start disappearing, writer Adam Shay and his neighbours discover an unholy evil dwelling deep in the forest: a satyr - a supernatural half-man, half goat creature, hellbent on protecting itself and spreading it's seed. With creature work to be contributed by Weta - where Campion used to work as an effects artist - a first teaser has arrived online via Bloody Disgusting. Good news for two more projects pitched during Fantasia's Frontières International Co-Production Market at this year's festival last month. For a festival that only runs for four days, Yifff certainly knows how to spread itself as wide as possible and pack in as much quality programming as the city can accommodate. In addition to everything I have alrerady covered in these previews, the festival includes a World Fantastic section, featuring films such as The Night Of The Chuqacabras from Brazilian filmmaker Rodrigo Aragao and The Devil's Rock, a supernatural World War II thriller from British-born Paul Campion, a digital effects artist-turned-director whose credits include The Lord Of The Rings trilogy. There is also an entire section devoted to new Korean Cinema. Among the films in this section is arguably my most anticipated film of the festival:young Gun In The Timea year after producing the...

Nastier than my ex: Gina Varela is a Nazi demoness in The Devil's Rock.
A shapely Nazi demoness ignites a bloody World War II battle from Hell in The Devil’s Rock, a 2011 action-horror war movie from New Zealand.
The film has a pretty straight-ahead albeit colorful story: On the eve of D-Day, two Allied commandos (Craig Hall of 30 Days of Night and Joseph Tane of TV’s Spartacus: Blood and Sand) are sent to destroy a German gun installation. Moving forward on their mission, the pair uncover a secret occult lair housing a mysterious Nazi officer (Matthew Sunderland, Under the Mountain) and his beautiful but devilish captive (sexy Gina Varela). Well, it turns out the Nazis are actually hiding a deadly she-demon, whom they plan to use to turn the tide of the war.

Director: Paul Campion.
Writers: Paul Finch, Brett Ihaka, and Paul Campion (screenplay).
Cast: Craig Hall, Matthew Sunderland and Gina Varela.
When there is a film that is about Nazis dabbling with the occult, ears are going to perk, and the question is would it have turned the tide of World War II? With The Devil’s Rock, all those tender loving thoughts are going to get explored again with its DVD release Feb 14.
Shades of Enemy Mine can be found at one level, and some nods to the Indiana Jones franchise can be found at another. The Nazis did try to look for the Spear of Destiny, Ark of the Covenant and Holy Grail before and during the war. Viewers who are not acquainted with history or archaeology may not know of Hitler’s preoccupation with connecting to the occult.

There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of love out there for the "WWII / horror movie" hybrid, but I'd contend that this odd mixture has yielded some decidedly interesting horror flicks over the years -- and if you've seen and enjoyed titles like The Keep, The Bunker, and Deathwatch, then you'll probably find something to enjoy in The Devil's Rock. A novel New Zealand import that has some cool ideas -- and some slow patches -- this is a low-budget but well-made little horror flick that earns points due to two strong leads and some slick visual effects from the masters at Weta. We open with a pair of basic but noble Allied soldiers who are sent to a remote (and very creepy) island to sabotage some...

Director: Paul Campion.
Writers: Paul Campion, Paul Finch, and Brett Ihaka.
The Devil's Rock is a film from special effects guru Paul Campion, which takes place during World War II. It is the night before D-Day (June 5, 1944) and two New Zealanders have a special mission. They must take out one of the German guns on an isolated island. However, the screams of a woman from a nearby bunker draw them down, down into the fiery depths of hell. Just like Dante in the Divine Comedy, these two Kiwis will face unimaginable horrors, in a demon's lair. Then issues of the occult pop up and Campion goes for a tried and true association of Germany with the supernatural, much like earlier films e.g. The Keep (1983), The Bunker (2001), and Outpost (2008).
The red hues and blood splattered walls signal that this is not wholly an earthly plane, as Captain Grogan (Craig Hall) and Pvt.

The Tree Of Life (12A)
(Terrence Malick, 2011, Us) Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain, Hunter McCracken, Laramie Eppler, Sean Penn, Tye Sheridan. 139 mins
Successor to Kubrick's 2001 or extended perfume ad? Either way, Malick's macro/microcosmic take on life, the universe and family life makes most films look unadventurous. Beyond the head-trip "creation of the universe" sequences, it's largely Sean Penn's impressionistic reminiscence of his conflicted childhood, rendered in gorgeous imagery, with introspective voiceovers and a dreamy intensity.
The Princess Of Montpensier (15)
(Bertrand Tavernier, 2010, Fra) Mélanie Thierry, Gaspard Ulliel, Lambert Wilson. 140 mins
There's costumes and courtliness, but this 16th-century saga remains unstuffy. Sought-after Thierry's quest for self-determination is the focus, and the treatment is modern and immediate.
Trust (15)
(David Schwimmer, 2010, Us) Liana Liberato, Clive Owen, Catherine Keener. 106 mins
Those who saw Catfish will know where this teen's online relationship with an apparently nice boy is headed. But what follows is an exercise in parent-worrying technophobia.

You know how Dustin, Steven, Dan and Bedhead spend their weekends at movie theaters, hoping that one of the week's big releases will actually yield something good? I'm like that, except for an aversion to public places and humans. So instead, I wander the internet and Netflix, trying to find a diamond in the rough, an unheard-of film that will end up being a pleasant surprise. As a result, I find myself watching a lot of the foreign horror releases, a lot of animated fare, and a bunch of other stuff that my wife rolls her eyes at. Anyway, here's a nifty round-up of some of the better-looking small films to be found. Enjoy.
First, we've got the Korean film Section 7, which is hoping to contend with The Host for best Korean monster movie. It's very reminiscent of the classic American B-flick, Deep Rising, but it might be worth a go.

I had the pleasure of seeing director Paul Campion's fun short film Night of the Hell Hamsters at the Another Hole in the Head film festival many years ago. So I was very excited when I heard about his new feature length film, The Devil's Rock, which premiered at the Cannes Film festival this past Friday. The WW2 horror film was shot in 15 days in Wellington, New Zealand. It stars Craig Hall (30 Days of Night), Matthew Sunderland, Gina Varela and Karlos Drinkwater ("Kerza", Spartacus: Blood and Sand). Check out the trailer for The Devil's Rock below.

Two genre movies had their Cannes market premieres today and both are well worth looking out for. Remember the exciting ending of Hammer's The Devil Rides Out where Chris Lee and co are standing in a pentagram being assaulted by satanic forces? That kind of suspense excitement caps director Paul Campion's New Zealand horror thriller The Devil's Rock ( watch the trailer ). Call it "Hellgirl," call it " Saw with swastikas," this Second World War set four-hander finds two Kiwi commandos assigned to the Channel Islands to blow up a giant gun at a beach head fortress. But once inside the foreboding structure they hear unearthly screams and investigate the dark tunnel system to discover the cause. There they find the head of Hitler's occult Gestapo squadron...

There's something just not quite right about that girl.Director Paul Campion created quite a stir with his short film Eel Girl, a scifi tinged horror picture with a darker than dark sense of humor at its core. The whole thing was a riff on male desires and Campion is working that angle - though without the humor - once again with his first feature The Devil's Rock.Set in the Channel Islands on the eve of D-Day, two Kiwi Commandos sent to destroy German gun emplacements to distract Hitler's forces away from Normandy, discover a Nazi occult plot to unleash demonic forces to win the war.Campion enlisted the help of Weta star Richard Taylor for the practical effects on this one, and with the film...

Paul Campion impressed us with his film Eel Girl , now we finally have a look at The Devil's Rock , a New Zealand production that he committed to last summer. Set against the backdrop of World War II, the film follows two New Zealand commandos who uncover a Nazi plot to use demonic forces to win the war. Is it safe to say we can that "demonic" element is a woman? You betcha. Check out the trailer below.

Good news for fans of military themed horror. Not only is Eel Girl director Paul Campion currently in post production on his debut feature with the help of Richard Taylor and his crew at Weta on the effects end, but that picture - The Devil's Rock - has already landed distribution in the UK via Metrodome in what is being described simply as a six figure deal.
And why would Metrodome move this quickly on a debut feature that isn't even done yet? Simple. Because Campion's short film work is stellar, because Weta is similarly stellar, and because if the footage Nz Film are showing from The Devil's Rock is any indication, this film is also shaping up to be stellar.
Set in the Channel Islands during WWII the film follows a pair of New Zealand military officers sent in as saboteurs to destroy a German military bunker. What they...
