Olga Kurylenko in Chief Of Station
If you don’t know her name, you almost certainly know her face. Ever since 2008’s Quantum Of Solace, in which she managed to stand out alongside James Bond, Ukrainian-born Olga Kurylenko has been making a big impression. A former model, she has an instinctive approach to acting which has served her well in the likes of To The Wonder, The Water Diviner, Mara, The Translators and The Bay Of Silence. She’s also made a name for herself as an action performer – “A lot of people somehow call me back to do action. I wonder why,” she says, laughing – and now she’s hitting screens in her latest thriller, Chief Of Station, alongside Aaron Eckhart.
“I get lots of action propositions and I do say no to a lot, but certain things I do say yes, and for very different reasons,” she says.

As more than 125,000 visitors and nearly 2,000 documentary industry professionals are expected at leading documentary festival Cph:dox, its managing director Katrine Kiilgaard and new head of industry and training Mara Gourd-Mercado spoke to Variety on the eve of the festival’s kick off March 13.
The Cph:forum and its pitching, financing and co-production platform runs March 18-21 in Copenhagen.
Mara, this is your first Cph:Dox as head of industry and training. What do you feel are your strengths, and coming from Canada, what struck you about the European doc industry and Cph:dox’s specific place in that documentary eco-system?
Mara Gourd-Mercado: I’ve worked several years for the Montreal International Documentary Festival as executive director, where we developed our international connections, be it in Europe, the Mena region or the U.S. Cph:dox has its own international network, and I firmly believe I’m bringing an added value with my own connections.

The community of Belarusian filmmakers in exile have gathered in Berlin to honor their own, presenting the second-annual Belarusian Film Critics Awards, the Red Heathers.
The awards, presented at Berlin’s European Film Market (EFM) are as much a display of political resistance as they are a celebration of artistic excellence. Thousands of Belarusians fled the country following the contested 2020 presidential elections there when the Aliaksandr Lukashenka government began cracking down on peaceful pro-democracy protestors.
At the EFM last year, exiled filmmakers launched an independent film academy. A parallel independent Belarussian Film Critics Association was also set up, with support from the German Marshall Fund, Poland’s Trzy Trąby Fund, and the Goethe-Instituts in Exil, a special section of the German cultural institution which supports artists and intellectuals from countries where the Goethe Institute had to shut down their operations due to war or political interference.

“It’s about a whole bunch of things,” Mexican filmmaker Alonso Ruizpalacios says when quizzed on the subject of his latest feature, La Cocina, debuting this evening at the Berlin Film Festival. “In equal parts, it explores the topic of work, the American dream, the failure of the American dream, and abortion rights. That’s a really tough question as a director.”
Ruizpalacios has a point. Starring Rooney Mara and shot in a crisp digital black-and-white, La Cocina is hard to define. Running just short of two-and-a-half hours, the pic is a complex and formally ambitious tale, perhaps best described as a tragicomedy, set in a deathly busy New York City restaurant called The Grill.
The film opens during the lunch rush at The Grill, where, to the fury of the restaurant management, money has gone missing from the till. As a result, all the undocumented cooks are now subject...

Stories of urban life under pressure dominated the 25th Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival as the event wrapped Saturday with top honors going to Slovak director Barbora Sliepkova for “Lines,” called by the jury an “exceptional” approach to showing how “beauty, intimacy and space are intertwined” amid social and economic contradictions and connections.
“Lines” also took the prize for best debut and sound design by Michal Horvath along with $10,000, and was praised for its “complex and perfectly well crafted work.”
Main competition special mention went to “When You Are Close to Me,” a look at the lives of deaf and blind people by Italian director Laura Viezzoli, which the jury, including Syrian writer and filmmaker Orwa Al Mokdad and Romanian producer Anamaria Antoci, honored for its explorations of “sensitive and intimate space.”

Grimmfest have today announced the launch of their Grimmfest Easter Edition, a new annual event taking place over the Easter Weekend, and complimenting the long-established festival in October.
Easter is traditionally a time for rebirth, renewal, resurrection. But as the Pandemic continues to rage, and the world remains on lockdown for the foreseeable future, it is also a time for rethinking. Thus, while the Grimmfest team had hoped to be hosting a ‘live’ Easter event, instead, the Grimmfest Easter Edition will be taking place online, and will build on the success of Grimmfest 2020 online experience.
The festival will open on Thursday April 1st with our preview night that will feature the UK premiere of Kourosh Ahari’s surreal and sulphurous Iranian American haunted hotel horror The Night, which has already earned deserved comparisons to Kubrick’s The Shining, alongside the UK premiere of Lluis Danes’ visually ravishing reimagining of the...

Russian Film Week USA, which runs Jan. 23-29, is expanding its reach as it pivots to an online format, allowing audiences across the U.S. to sample Russia’s latest cinematic output. The event opens with Alexey Uchitel’s surreal road trip movie “Tsoy,” which imagines the aftermath of the fateful 1990 car accident that killed Soviet rock idol Victor Tsoy.
The first batch of 10 titles to be announced by the event, formerly called Russian Film Week New York, are all international or North American premieres, with the rest of the program, including documentaries and children’s films, to be announced later this month.
“The Whaler Boy,” which won Venice Days’ award for best director, is the closing night film. It follows an indigenous teenager as he discovers a world far beyond his whaling community. Other films in the lineup include Ivan Tverdovskiy’s “The Conference,” which also played at Venice Days,...

There’s a lot of great new stuff coming to Netflix in January, with over 75 titles being added to the streaming giant’s library over the course of next month. Unfortunately, it’s just the way it goes, though, that we’ve got to lose some old content to get new content and a bunch of movies and TV shows will be removed from the site across January as well. Thankfully, this coming month isn’t a huge one for losses, but there’s still a decent amount that’ll be departing.
Of course, the title that most Netflix users will be missing in January actually leaves on December 31st – The Office is being removed from the service on New Year’s Eve so that it can stream exclusively on NBC’s newly activated streaming platform Peacock. As such, here’s another reminder to binge all nine seasons of the...

Before you chime in with your thoughts, a brief recap of the first episode: Kate Mara (House of Cards) stars as Claire Wilson, an AP English teacher on her first day at a new school in 2013. It’s made very clear that Claire is the “hot” teacher and different than the stereotypical idea what of an instructor should be. For starters, she shoplifts a lipstick from the store. Ninja Theory's ambitious Project: Mara wants to turn an intimate struggle into a horror adventure.
Developer Ninja Theory has announced that it has started work on a new title currently known as Project: Mara.
“Project: Mara will be a real-world and grounded representation of mental terror,” says Ninja Theory. "Based on real lived experience accounts and in-depth research, the goal is to recreate the horrors of the mind as accurately and realistically as possible. Project: Mara will be an experimental title and a showcase of what could become a new storytelling medium.”
Ninja Theory also states that the game will be "based heavily on research and interviews" in order to "recreate the horrors of the mind as accurately and believably as possible.” The title will reportedly be set in one location and primarily feature one character. The Star Wars Sequel Trilogy has so far offered a drastically different post-Return of the Jedi world from the one seen in the Expanded Universe fiction, now known as Star Wars Legends. Nonetheless, some fans are clinging to the hope that a few of their favorite non-canonical characters will make the jump to the big screen, and in a new piece from CinemaBlend, the case is assessed of whether Luke Skywalker’s EU wife Mara Jade might show up in next year’s Star Wars: Episode IX.
It’s worth noting that this idea hasn’t come out of thin air. Earlier this year, a casting call reportedly went out that was looking for “a female lead, 40-50 years old, to play the role of Mara.” Naturally, the name was enough to inspire the wishful thinking of fans, and when the casting of Keri Russell in an unnamed role was announced a few months later,...

November 6th’s home media releases are all about the Steelbooks apparently, as horror fans have four different titles that are coming home this week that would be great additions to anyone’s collections. Scream Factory’s Steelbook for John Carpenter’s The Thing is a work of art, and Well Go USA has put together two beautiful Steelbook releases for both Phantasm: Remastered and Train to Busan, and we even get a Grindhouse Steelbook to boot. Scream Factory is also pulling double duty with the Collector’s Edition of Sleepwalkers, and as far as recent horror offerings go, Mara, The Last Sharknado: It’s About Time, and All Light Will End are getting released this Tuesday, too.

Olga Kurylenko will lead a female-led cast in “The Courier,” a London-set action thriller from Zackary Adler (“The Rise of the Krays”).
Kurylenko (“Quantum of Solace”) will play the titular courier, whose daily deliveries are interrupted when she discovers that her latest package is a bomb aimed at the witness of a crime lord’s murder. She then embarks on a race against time to save the target from corrupt CIA agents and Russian mercenaries.

James Edward Barker (“Mara”) will also produce through Rollercoaster Angel Productions, the new firm he has formed with Adler, who has a pedigree in British crime drama.

In what’s got to be a bit of a blow for Charlize Theron, Star Wars: Episode IX has reportedly put out a casting call searching for an actress described as “a younger Charlize Theron with street smarts and a sharp wit,” somewhere between 25 and 27 years of age of any ethnicity and who must have “a good sense of humor, solid comedic timing and a strong voice.” Word is this new character’s named Karina and given that the First Order has not been previously known for its members’ comedic timing, it’s safe to say she’s on the side of the heroes.
This news comes to us via That Hashtag Show, who previously revealed that the film was looking for a 40-50 old year woman to play ‘Mara‘ (this announcement launched a million speculative articles about Mara Jade being in the movie, obviously) and an 18-26 year old...

J.J. Abrams is currently deep into the development of Star Wars: Episode IX and with the film project scheduled to start shooting in July, he and his team are in the process of casting the lead roles in the film. Thanks to a recent report from That Hashtag Show, it looks like he may be including a major and popular character from the classic Expanded Universe novels.
Even though this is only a rumor, if you don't wan't to know who this character might be, you probably won't want to read ahead:
They are reporting that Abrams and casting director Nina Gold, who has worked on both The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, are looking for a "female lead, 40-50 years old, to play the role of Mara." Now, this could be a code name being used during the casting process, but this character is believed to be Mara Jade,...

Olga Kurylenko's name may have just entered the rumor mill in relation to possibly joining “Batman vs. Superman” as Wonder Woman, but as a batch of recent casting news shows, the “To The Wonder” actress will have a bout of horror first. While the star from “We're The Millers” aims to don a costume instead, “Catwoman” director Pitof re-emerges with his next project, and John Cusack plans to hire a getaway driver. Kurylenko has been announced (via Dread Central) to star in the supernatural horror film “Mara”, which will mark music video director Clive Tonge's feature-length debut. Focusing on the mythology surrounding sleep paralysis, the film follows a criminal psychologist (Kurylenko) who investigates the murder of a man, apparently by his wife, and instead finds herself within the legend of a demon that kills people in their sleep. Production on the film is set for May next year,...

With three films in post-production and two more (including Russell Crowe's The Water Diviner) on the way, these are busy times for Olga Kurylenko. She's managed to squeeze in one more project, however, in the form of Mara, a supernatural horror thriller from debut director Clive Tonge. Jonathan Frank (The Tournament) wrote the screenplay.Mara's high concept is centred on sleep paralysis and Sudden Unexpected Nocturnal Death Syndrome. Kurylenko plays criminal psychologist Kate Fuller, assigned to look into an apparent murder in which the victim seems to have been killed in his sleep by his wife. The only witness is eight-year-old Sophie. But Fuller's investigations lead to the legend of an ancient folk demon, and gaining its attention leads Fuller to experience similar ordeals to previous victims as she struggles to escape the curse. So what's Mara? We're guessing the demon, which takes various forms in various cultures.
