From 1960 through 1964, legendary producer Roger Corman‘s company American International Pictures went through what’s known as “The Poe Cycle”, releasing eight films based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe. There was The Fall of the House of Usher, The Pit and the Pendulum, Premature Burial, Tales of Terror, The Haunted Palace, The Raven, Masque of the Red Death, and The Tomb of Ligeia – and the making of each one of those films is covered in the new book Corman/Poe! Copies of the book can be purchased at This Link.

Few literary figures have achieved the same kind of pop culture afterlife as Edgar Allan Poe. Much like Franz Kafka, the idea of Poe has become conflated with the writer's most famous works: The tragic, haunted figure, scribbling away feverishly by candlelight, only pausing occasionally to fling open the shutters of his window and gaze out into the night beyond with fear and trepidation.
This romantic notion makes Poe an intriguing character who has carried well into other mediums. There are hundreds of comics based on the author and/or his works (even teaming up with the Dark Knight in "Batman: Nevermore"), as well as stage plays, radio shows, books, and, of course, movies. The controversial master of silent cinema, D.W. Griffith, directed the first film based on the author, "Edgar Allan Poe," back in 1909, and actors including Joseph Cotton, Klaus Kinski, and Ben Chaplin have all played the gloomy author on screen.

San Francisco, Feb 7 (Ians) Social question-and-answer platform Quora has opened up public access to its new AI product “Poe”, which allows users to ask questions, receive instant answers and engage in back-and-forth dialogue with AI chatbots.
Poe (Platform for Open Exploration) was initially available on iOS, but the company said that it will add support for all major platforms in the next few months, along with more bots.
Poe functions similarly to a text messaging app, but for AI models users can communicate with the models separately.
Its chat interface offers a variety of conversation topics and uses cases, such as “writing help”, “cooking,”, “problem-solving”, and “nature”.
The AI on Poe is currently powered by models from OpenAI and Anthropic, the company said.
“We foresee a large number of models available in the near future. Different models will be optimized for different tasks, they will represent different points of view,...

Robert Downey Jr. had serious discussions with action star Sylvester Stallone about doing an Edgar Allen Poe movie. But Stallone wasn’t sure Downey might have been a big enough star for the film to work.
Sylvester Stallone has been working on an Edgar Allen Poe biopic since the 70s Robert Downey Jr. and Sylvester Stallone | Jed Jacobsohn/Getty Images
At the height of Stallone’s career, the famous Rocky franchise wasn’t the only material the actor was focused on. His growing megastar status didn’t distract Stallone from his passions as a writer. So Stallone was still penning a variety of scripts during and after his Rocky success.
One of those scripts focused on the life and death of one of history’s most influential literary authors.
“The one thing I’m not gonna do is, I’m not gonna be Eugene O’Neill and write about my private demons.

We’re back with another look at the best and worst of Hollywood’s remakes. This article will be dissecting a failed attempt to recreate a Universal horror film starring Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi. This week, Cinelinx, looks at The Raven (2012).
In the 1930s, Universal Studios, which specialized in horror and monster movies, teamed up their two cinematic titans of terror Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi in a series of films. The Raven (1935) was their second pairing. While the project was inspired by the Edgar Allan Poe poem “The Raven”, the plot is actually original, designed for the two leading men. The combination of the stars of Frankenstein (Karloff) and Dracula (Lugosi) could elevate even a mediocre film into something memorable. Sadly, the 2012 remake is totally not memorable.
On the plus side, John Cusack is ideally cast in the remake as literary legend Poe, alternately capturing Poe's egotism,...

We first told you back in July about Syfy giving the green light to the pilot Dominion, based on characters in the 2010 film Legion. Back then we had little to go on besides a sketchy paragraph about it being set 25 years in the future after an epic war between an army of angels and humankind.
Now we have more, including not only the casting of three major characters (at least two of whom are likely familiar to you) but a lot more in the way of plot and character detail.
Although I’m completely enthusiastic and encouraging about this pilot, the fact that one of the actors, Christopher Egan, was also cast in the pilot Gothica as Dorian Gray proves that casting a pilot by no means guarantees its pickup to series.
You have been warned; get excited about this, but don’t fall in love just yet:

Chris Egan is to play the lead role in Syfy's new pilot Dominion.
The supernatural action drama is based on 2010 Paul Bettany movie Legion.
Former Home and Away star Egan will play Alex Lannen, a maverick soldier who learns that he is the saviour of humanity, Deadline reports.
The 29-year-old is best known for playing Nick Smith on Australian soap Home and Away between 2000 and 2003. More recently, Egan has appeared in three TV pilots for ABC - last year's Gothica, 2012's Beauty and the Beast opposite musician and actor Darius Campbell and 2011's Poe.
Alan Dale (Lost, The Oc) will also feature in the Dominion pilot, set 25 years after the events of Legion.
Dominion will explore the aftermath of a war between angels and mankind, with Dale's character Rysen - a general in the war - now ruling over one of four surviving human cities.

Seth Gabel! I would have started this article with a long Woo Hoo if it wasn’t somewhat unprofessional. But please allow me to take a step back. Gothica (which by the way has absolutely nothing to do with the Halle Berry movie of the same name) is a pilot in development at ABC, described as a modern-day gothic horror soap surrounding the lives of Dracula, Jekyll and Hyde, Frankenstein, Dorian Gray and more. Excellent, right?
This is not to be confused with the Showtime straight-to-series (no pilot required) Penny Dreadful, which features the same characters but in a Victorian London setting, that we told you about back in January. Nor is it to be confused with the modern-day I, Frankenstein movie which in turn is not to be confused with the Frankenstein movie that might have Daniel Radcliffe in it, as we reported earlier today. Don’t worry, we...

With Hannibal, The Munsters, Sleepy Hollow, Penny Dreadful, The Following, and another season of American Horror Story coming to TV, it’s a wonderful time to be a horror TV fan. Add ABC’s Gothica to the mix.
Not to be messed up with the crappy Halle Berry movie Gothika, Gothica features a stable of our favorite literary horror characters, from Dorian Gray to Victor Frankenstein, Dracula, and others. It’s moving faster than Penny Dreadful, a similar sounding project at Showtime, and has found its Dorian Gray, Victor Frankenstein and “Grace” Van Helsing.
Chris Egan has been cast as Dorian Gray. The Aussie has appeared in Poe, Letters To Juliet, Kings, Resident Evil: Extinction, and Eragon.
Tom Ellis will be Victor Frankenstein. Ellis is a veteran of BBC TV, with The Fades, Gates, and a slew of others under his belt.

Aussie Chris Egan will play Dorian Gray and Brit Tom Ellis will portray Victor Frankenstein in the project, set in the present day, which weaves together a mythology that incorporates the legends of Dracula, Jekyll and Hyde, Frankenstein and Dorian Gray. In this incarnation of the story, written by Matt Lopez, Victor Frankenstein (Ellis) runs a hospital that also does biotech research and believes that he may have a way to bring his recently deceased daughter back to life. Victor was once romantically involved with the show’s lead character, Grace Van Helsing. Dorian Gray (Egan) is a wealthy playboy who invests $20 million in Grace’s newspaper. The Raven arrived on Blu-ray and DVD on October 7 to commemorate Edgar Allan Poe's death, which was Oct. 7, 1849. James McTeigue directed this suspense thriller which stars John Cusack as Poe. The cast also includes Alice Eve, Luke Evans, Brendan Gleeson, Oliver Jackson-Cohen and Kevin McNally. Despite a solid cast and production The Raven failed to entertain on a number of levels.
Ben Livingston and Hannah Shakespeare penned the screenplay, which takes audiences inside the final days of the eccentric author. The story takes place in Baltimore, Maryland where a fictionalized account of Poe's life, in which the poet is in pursuit of a serial killer whose murders mirror those in the his stories. In The Raven, the city of Baltimore acts as an integral part of the plot as Poe races through the city to bring the murderer to justice.

Chicago – John Cusack is an enormously likable actor, and for the first third of James McTeigue’s period thriller, he holds audience interest long enough to inspire hope for a better two thirds. Alas, the film crash lands soon after that, as McTeigue proves to have little to no interest in his central subject, one of the greatest writers in the history of literature.
Edgar Allan Poe’s tormented life as an orphaned genius turned struggling literary critic would make fine subject matter for a first-rate feature, and it’s clear that the intentions behind “The Raven” were promising enough. By creating a fictional narrative that forces Poe to deconstruct his own psychology in order to solve a string of ghastly crimes, screenwriters Ben Livingston and Hannah Shakespeare aimed to explore the writer’s persona by trapping him in one of his own dark tales. The film was well received; but, this title was by no means a hit. Recently, this feature was released for the first time on home video formats (October 9th). The Raven is light entertainment. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle has said that the writing of Edgar Allan Poe inspired his Sherlock Holmes stories. It’s not too much of a stretch then for a movie in which Edgar Allan Poe tracks down a serial killer whose murders mimic Poe’s stories.
John Cusack plays the famous author and delivers a performance that keeps you entertained throughout the film. However, a lack of focus and predictable plot elements prevent The Raven from being a standout film.
The Raven is a fictional tale that fills in the gaps of Poe’s final days. Although Edgar Allan Poe is relatively well known at the time, he’s broke and alcoholism prevents him from creating another great story. Countless movies have been based upon the work of Edgar Allan Poe, and the author himself, one of America's great horror writers, has appeared as a character in countless more. This review originally ran after film's U.K. release in March.
About ten minutes into James McTeigue's "The Raven," a large, hairy man -- a writer and critic, as it turns out -- is strapped to a table by a mysterious figure. A mighty blade, inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's "The Pit And The Pendulum," hangs forbodingly above him. And to his unseen captor, he screams "I'm just a critic! Why? Why would you do this to me?" After sitting through a further hundred minutes of McTeigue's inept, idiotic period thriller, we knew exactly how he felt.
The idea of taking a literary author of crime and horror and planting them in a murder investigation of their own is not a new one: indeed, it looked for a while that this film's thunder was going to be stolen by an ABC pilot "Poe" that never made it to air.

Chicago – Though Chicago’s John Cusack is perhaps best known for his beloved roles as a down-to-earth charmer in “Say Anything” and “High Fidelity,” he’s no stranger to exploring the troubling depths of darkness. He’s engaged the dangerous obsessions of his neurotic puppeteer in Spike Jonze’s “Being John Malkovich” or the horrific visions of his paranormal writer in Mikael Håfström’s “1408”.
In James McTeigue’s period thriller, “The Raven,” Cusack tackles perhaps his darkest role to date: the legendary poet and writer, Edgar Allan Poe. The film blends history and fiction a la “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter,” as Poe hunts down a serial killer whose crimes are modeled after the author’s goriest tales. During an April press conference at Chicago’s C2E2 convention, Cusack said that he admired Poe for being a “highbrow guy” who somehow managed to “write pulp Saturday afternoon thrillers” as well...

Sneak Peek director James McTeigue's upcoming thriller "The Raven", starring John Cusack and Luke Evans, based on a screenplay by Ben Livingston and Hannah Shakespeare, fictionalizing the last days of American author Edgar Allan Poe :
"...in 19th century Baltimore, 'Edgar Allan Poe' (Cusack) joins forces with 'Detective Emmett Fields' (Evans) to hunt down a killer, who uses Poe's own works as the basis in a string of crimes.
"When a mother and daughter are found dead, Fields makes a startling discovery: the crime resembles a fictional murder described in detail in the local newspaper--part of a collection of stories penned by struggling writer and social pariah Edgar Allan Poe.
"But even as Poe is questioned by police, another murder occurs, also inspired by a popular Poe story.

The CW television network is on the move to attract more youth-oriented viewers once again, developing a new series from Sherlock Holmes producer Dan Lin and "Veronica Mars" executive producer Jennifer Gwartz entitled "Dare". Easy A writer Bert V. Royal is attached to pen the hour-long action-thriller from Lin Pictures and Warner Bros. Television.
Per THR the story revolves around a group of five twentysomethings who are forced to play a deadly game of Truth or Dare while trying to discover who is behind the game and how to stop it.
The deal continues Lin's relationship with Warner Bros. Television, where he has an overall deal. Last year he developed "Poe", a supernatural period crime procedural exploring how Edgar Allan Poe's most famous stories came to be. ABC produced the pilot but ultimately passed on the drama in May. As for Gwartz, her credits lend themselves well to the action-drama:...

We got a look at some footage from period action thriller The Raven at Comic-Con this year, and now the full trailer is online over at Apple for everyone to see.
The Raven finds John Cusack as Edgar Allan Poe (yes, the man behind The Pit and the Pendulum, The Tell-Tale Heart and other classics of the horror literary canon). He's called in by detective Emmett Fields (Luke Evans) when a series of grisly murders crop up, all seemingly inspired by the writer's work. Initially, the eye of suspicion falls on him, but soon it's clear that the suspect is taunting Poe, looking to engage him in a battle of wits that also ends up threatening the life of his beloved Emily (Alice Eve).

The Fall TV Season presentations for all the new network shows take place this week with the third announced today. Here's a full breakdown of which concepts have made the final list over on ABC.
With one strong reality performer ("Dancing with the Stars"), one solid light procedural ("Castle"), one acclaimed comedy ("Modern Family"), one decent rated comedy ("Cougar Town"), and two former flagship sudsers past their best buy date ("Desperate Housewives," "Grey's Anatomy"), the Alphabet is in need of hits to fill some big gaps in its schedule.
Only two shows last season survived and both are modest raters at best - meaning this year the network is trying out thirteen new shows, easily more than any other, in their efforts to score hopefully a few hits. Seven of them will launch in the Fall and six more around mid-season.

After spending untold amounts of cash on hundreds of dramas and comedies — most of which will never make it to your living rooms — the five broadcast networks will begin announcing in New York next week which projects are good enough to earn a coveted fall pickup. NBC’s Wonder Woman is considered less certain despite heavy online interest in the costume. Should the David E. It’s pilot season in the Us. The time of year where the networks finance and film the best (well, most marketable) pilot scripts that grabbed their attention, with the hope of a few being strong enough to warrant a series commitment for 2011/12.
Many will be so heinous they’ll never air; some will impress execs enough that they’ll go to series, only to be axed amidst low ratings; a handful may be lucky enough to last a whole season on-air; and a few may even be popular with audiences and justify a second season. Well, you never know!
Below is a list of 20 pilots that have my interest right now, based solely on their premise or the talent involved. Obviously, it’s unfair to judge these pilots before we’ve seen them, but this is intended to be a quick overview of the positive and negative buzz surrounding them right now.

Add former “The Tudors” star Natalie Dormer to the cast of ABC’s period crime procedural “Poe”, which will find former “Kings” man Christopher Egan playing the titular horror writer, who also happens to be “the world’s first detective” in Boston during the 1840s. That imagination should come in handy when he starts investigating bizarre crimes that, one presumes, leaves the “regular” cops baffled. Dormer will play a character name Celeste, though who Celeste is or what she does, is currently unknown. She joins a cast that already includes Kevin McNally, “Legend of the Seeker’s” Tabrett Bethell (playing Poe’s “muse”), and Leslie Odom Jr. as Poe’s forensics partner. The show is from producer/writer Chris Hollier, with Alex Graves directing the pilot.
