Perhaps one of the most unusual and surprising shows to open on Broadway in 2017 is a musical adaptation of Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants. An international sensation, the long-running cartoon about the adventures of a yellow anthropomorphic sea sponge and his underwater friends living in the city of Bikini Bottom has spawned two movies, video games and theme park rides.
Now, SpongeBob’s eclectic world is the source of a delightful new theater production conceived and directed by Tina Landau with a book written by Kyle Jarrow and music supervision, orchestration and arrangements by Tom Kitt. The show, playing at The Palace Theatre, stars Ethan Slater as the titular sponge, Gavin Lee as Squidward Q. Tentacles, Lilli Cooper as Sandy Cheeks, Danny Skinner as Patrick Star and Wesley Taylor as Sheldon Plankton.
“When I heard that they were developing it, my head exploded,” says Jarrow, who jumped at the opportunity to be part of the production. Having worked in theater...

Is your wardrobe basic? Before you say no with an attitude, it should be. Fall and winter are all about layers, making T-shirts necessary. The most glamorous superstars like Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardashian rely on basic tops. Why? Because every outfit has a star and supporting characters. White T-shirts and black tank tops are arguably the best supporting characters you can buy (although they may be tied to denim). They go with everything. While the items are basic, purchasing the perfect tee isn't easy. The fabric, fit, sleeve length, neckline and rise matters when you're putting together an fall ensemble. To be safe, it's better to have one of everything. For one, they'll never go out of...

Like father, like son!
Patriots quarterback and five-time Super Bowl champ Tom Brady had some tough competition on the field Friday — his 9-year-old son Jack!
The pair tossed around the pigskin together at a charity event that kicked off a weekend of fundraising physical activities in support of Best Buddies International — a nonprofit organization dedicated to ending the social, physical and economic isolation for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Held at Harvard Stadium in Allston, Massachusetts, the Tom Brady Best Buddies Football Challenge bought together Brady and fellow Patriots like Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola for two hours of competition.

Now that’s in-flight entertainment.
Andy Grammer surprised a plane full of travelers with an acoustic concert in the latest Southwest Live at 35 series with “Live in the Vineyard.”
Standing in the aisle, Grammer, 33, sang and strummed his hit track “Fresh Eyes” for passengers when the plane hit 35,000 feet, somewhere between Denver, Colorado and Sacramento, California.
“I fly almost every day, but I’ve never sung with a whole plane – and they sang back,” said Grammer. “It made me really, really happy. It was amazing.”
Grammer said that he’s been “writing a ton” and teased a new album, coming possibly this year.

When choosing to unleash seemingly any desperate comedian they could find willing to work for scale, the creators of White T ensured that almost nothing about White T would make sense. In fact, somewhere toward the end of this incompetent comedy starring two obese wannabe rappers, psychotic Kevin (Robbie Kaller) mutters to himself, "That makes no fuckin' sense, K-Dawg." Admittedly, K-Dawg is not the voice of reason in a film where multiple parties converge on a coveted Xxl white T-shirt that entitles the owner to perform at a major concert. But he is the sanest person here because at least he admits that he's also bewildered by the lameness of his own off-the-cuff jokes. Herb and Henry (Jerod and Jamal Mixon), aspiring to be the new Fat Boys, are the first to make fun of ...

Not surprisingly, Frankenweenie brought a lot of fans to theaters. A kind of self-tribute for Tim Burton, and a return to animated adventures that have won over millions, Frankenweenie offered a multi-pronged attack on inciting interest.
Though not without its detractors (me, to a certain degree, among them), the film managed a great response, including solid positioning on many a top ten list. Even for those not completely sold on the effort, there is a lot to love about the film, especially if the genre homage lands.
The story, a reworking of Burton’s own short (included with the home release), may include monsters and a certain degree of mayhem, but it delivers on its celebration of friendship, childhood, and a boy’s love for his dog. It’s a quirky mix, but one that showcases the power of sci-fi in telling stories that deliver reality better for their lack of reality.
