The major Hollywood studios skirted this weekend and held off on new releases, a decision that likely hedged against an uncertain national mood following the presidential election. Their absence is others’ gain though, as A24’s tricky thriller “Heretic” and Lionsgate’s seasonal play “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” each look to make a solid impression in their opening weekends.
But it’s Sony’s “Venom: The Last Dance” that continues to stay on top of domestic charts. After an underwhelming opening weekend, the “Spider-Man” spin-off has been putting up solid holds, turning in another one here. “The Last Dance” added $3.9 million on Friday, on its way to about $14 million for its third weekend of release. It has now notched $100 million in North America and will pass “Alien: Romulus” ($105 million), “If” ($111 million) and “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” ($113 million) over the next few days to become the 14th-highest-grossing domestic release of the year.

Last month, 20th Century Studios president Steve Asbell confirmed that a sequel to director Fede Alvarez’s recently released Alien: Romulus is in the works – so when The Hollywood Reporter mentioned in an article that producer Ridley Scott “revealed he’s developing a new Alien movie for 20th in the wake of Romulus’ success,” they’re probably talking about that Romulus sequel… even though Scott thinks a better choice would be to make a follow-up to his 2017 film Alien: Covenant.
Scott told THR, “Covenant is the best one [for a sequel] because it leaves the girl in the [cryo pod] and [Michael Fassbender’s killer android] David has alien eggs and 2,000 colonists hanging around. It’s a perfect beginning.” Interviewer James Hibberd suggested that the next film could be a sequel to both Covenant and Romulus, since “both films ended with ships headed to a planet we’ve never been to; there’s no reason...

Scott has been weighing a handful of films for his next project including Paramount’s Bee Gees movie. Sources said that they found a sweet spot for the busy Mescal to re-team with Scott, and that is why they’ve set this as their next collaboration, with the aim to shoot next spring after Mescal stars on Broadway in A Streetcar Named Desire. The second highest grossing Alien movie in box office history, Alien: Romulus, will hit Hulu on Nov. 21. That’s a 98 day theatrical window, which is pretty robust and par for Disney since returning to windows post former CEO Bob Chapek. Pic’s digital release was on Oct. 15. The title will hit DVD and Blu-Ray on Dec. 3.

Alvarez told us on Crew Call about his inspirations for the Alien sequel: “I hope people connect with it because it’s such a third world story. That’s where I’m from.

Ridley Scott gives a tight smile when he’s told he “crushed it” making his long-awaited sandal-and-toga sequel Gladiator II.
“I know,” Scott replies. “You never count your chickens … but sometimes, you know.”
The director’s commercial instincts are honed by 47 years of ups and downs in Hollywood. The British filmmaker got his start as feature film director with 1977’s The Duelists and has been working ever since. This month, Scott turns 87 and has never been more productive, having ground out three historical action epics over the last few years — 2021’s The Last Duel, 2023’s Napoleon, and now Gladiator II, which is generating early buzz as a likely hit that might score Scott his first Oscar. He’s also become more prolific as a producer via his company Scott Free, generating a storm of projects which include this summer’s surprise hit Alien: Romulus and Amazon’s upcoming series Blade Runner 2099.

Summer blockbusters like “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “Twisters” weren’t enough to keep AMC Entertainment from posting a $20.7 million loss during its most recent quarter. It compared unfavorably to the $12.3 million in profit that the world’s largest theater chain posted in the year-ago period.
At the same time, revenue at AMC fell 4.1% to $1.3 billion, down from the $1.4 billion that AMC reported in the year-ago period, which saw the dual releases of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” a double-billing that turbocharged the box office and inspired the portmanteau “Barbenheimer.” The company reported a loss per-share of 7 cents, compared to earnings of 8 cents in the year-ago quarter.
Attendance at the theater chain also declined, dropping from 73.6 million to 65.1 million on the weaker slate of films. Consequently, admissions revenue dropped from $798 million to $744.2 million, but revenue from concessions grew from $482.7 million to $490.4 million.
Other films released during the three-month period ending in September included “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” and “Alien: Romulus.

Few of today's modern genre filmmakers have had as great a run as Ridley Scott, the visionary director behind such films as Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator, and many more. Later this month, we'll feast our eyes on the 86-year-old director's latest masterpiece, Gladiator II, the sequel to his Oscar-winning 2000 film starring Russell Crowe. Joker: Folie à Deux opened to terrible reviews from both critics and audiences, with a low 32% approval rating on each side, making it “rotten.”
It also got a “D” grade from CinemaScore—the lowest ever for a superhero movie, though calling Joker 2 a superhero or comic book movie is a bit of a stretch.
After a disappointing box office opening, Joker: Folie à Deux saw one of the steepest second-week drops in superhero movie history. It made just $2.2 million on its second Friday, an 89.1% decline from its opening day—one of the lowest second-weekend showings for a DC movie this century.
By November 3, 2024, the film had earned $204.7 million worldwide ($58.2 million in the U.S. and Canada and $146.5 million internationally), but with a break-even point estimated between $375 million and $450 million, it’s expected to lose Warner Bros. around $125–200 million.

‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ premiered to horrific critics and audience scores. The movie currently holds a 32% approval rate by critics and a 32% approval rate by audiences, making it completely rotten.
The movie also received a “D” CinemaScore, the lowest so far for a superhero movie, although calling ‘Joker 2’ a superhero movie or even a comic adaptation would be a pretty big stretch.

It Ends With Us Box Office (Worldwide): On Its Way To Beat Alien: Romulus (Photo Credit – Instagram)
When people like good movies, they stick around for a long time. For example, It Ends With Us recently crossed the $200 million mark at the overseas box office. This has enabled the film to inch closer to Alien Romulus’ global haul and might even surpass that. Scroll below for the deets.
Both films are available on digital platforms and were also box office successes. They were part of the global top 10 of the year. Alien: Romulus is led by Cailee Spaeny, who showed her range with her last few films. The events of that film took place between 1979’s Alien and 1986’s Aliens. According to The Numbers, the film had an estimated budget of $80 million, which is 68.75% less than the budget of Blake Lively’s movie.

You can watch a seven-minute free excerpt of Paramount’s new horror flick Smile 2 online — but the grin you’ll need to plaster on your face is not included.
That’s right: The studio has pulled out yet another ad stunt, requiring watchers to hold anywhere between a light smile to a full-out Cheshire Cat leer to view the film’s first seven minutes. Launched for Halloween, the webpage requires an age verification before users are directed to a screen asking for permissions to be granted for camera access. Then, the screen prompts viewers to smile and hold it for the following seven minutes of Parker Finn’s follow-up to the 2022 original pic.
If you’re thinking that you can somehow outsmart the tech, think again: The webpage, which flashes your image green upon smiling, expeditiously changes to flash a red outline at the drop of the smile. The screen then goes black,...

It's generally understood how every element of a film contributes to its overall effect, and that changing even the tiniest detail can make or break a particular moment. Even so, sometimes it takes some experimenting to see just how and why something may or may not fit into the overall fabric of a movie, because you never know until you try. This principle can be trickier when attempting to experiment with a franchise, especially one as long-running and well-established as "Star Trek." Yet J.J. Abrams managed to stretch "Trek" past its usual parameters when he mounted his 2009 reboot/legacy/alternate "Kelvin" timeline feature, giving the franchise a much-needed burst of new aesthetic energy while retaining many of its core principles. After all, who ever thought that a Beastie Boys song would fit neatly into "Trek?"
It's in this spirit that the two follow-up films, Abrams' "Star Trek Into Darkness" and...

Halloween may be over for 2024, but keeping things creepy is a year-round dedication. This past weekend, I was fortunate enough to check out the "Alien: Romulus" activation at the Los Angeles Haunted Hayride during its final weekend of operation thanks to 20th Century Studios and Team Click. It was a life-affirming experience to get up close and personal with a Xenomorph, see a chestburster explode from two feet away and blood over unsuspecting journalists, and most importantly — have the opportunity to sit down with the prolific supervising sound editor of "Alien: Romulus," Lee Gilmore, to learn just how the effective sound of the film came to be.
The "Alien" franchise is unique in that the series has always been about dehumanization, and that it combines the sound of early, analog technology with the visceral, squelchy sounds of the human body being ripped apart — an absolute dream come true for someone working in sound design.

‘The Substance’ Does Equal to ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ on PVOD, but ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ Is Bigger
Warner Bros.’ woes with “Joker: Folie à Deux” continue with a weak debut on PVOD. The disastrous around $300 million investment for them left theaters after four weeks with under $60 million in domestic gross. Now, it is falling flat in initial PVOD response.
It placed fourth on both iTunes (which ranks by transactions) and Fandango (revenue-counting) after its release last Tuesday. “The Substance” (Mubi), released on Thursday (and also streaming at their site for subscribers), is third at iTunes, sixth at Fandango, debuts at #1.

Their “Don’t Move,” another female-centered genre original which led last week is second. “Martha,” their documentary on multimedia lifestyle celebrity Martha Stewart, directed by R.J. Cutler (“The September Issue”) is third. Anna Kendrick’s “Woman of the Hour,” #1 before that, is #6.
A curious addition, not an original but little seen is at #7. “Fall into Winter,” Lori Loughlin’s first film since her release from prison...

Exclusive: Gabriel Labelle (Saturday Night) and Isabela Merced (Alien: Romulus) have signed on to star opposite the previously announced Chloë Grace Moretz in Dutch & Razzlekhan, the forthcoming true crime love story directed by BAFTA nominee Jon S. Baird (Tetris), on which we were first to report.
The pair take over roles originally announced as being played by Lewis Pullman and Ariana DeBose, who have departed the project due to scheduling conflicts. Being introduced to buyers at AFM by North.Five.Six, the film has another key creative now in Brad Feinstein, who has come aboard to produce and finance through his Romulus Entertainment banner. Production kicks off in New Jersey in January.
Based on the 2022 Business Insider article “The $4.5 Billion Question” by Rob Price and Becky Peterson, Dutch & Razzlekhan is the explosive and unbelievably true story of the most expensive heist in history, with Heather “Razzlekhan” Morgan (Moretz) and Ilya “Dutch” Lichtenstein (Labelle) — lovers,...

Scott Beck and Bryan Woods’ newest movie, “Heretic,” out Nov. 8 via A24, is filled with thought-provoking discussions about faith and humanity. But eagle-eyed viewers will notice something unconventional in the credits: A message stating that “No generative AI was used in the making of this film.”
While “Heretic” — which tells the story of two Mormon missionaries (Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East) who get trapped in the house of a mysterious man (Hugh Grant) — has limited visual effects, Woods says they felt compelled to send audiences home with this discussion point.
“We have no illusions that when people watch ‘Heretic’ they’re going to go, ‘Wait, did they use generative AI?'” he says. “It doesn’t feel like that at all, but it was important for us to put that out there because we think it’s something people need to start talking about.”

One thing you can count on Ridley Scott for is an honest opinion. The director is famously candid in his interviews, previously blaming the box office for his film "The Last Duel" on the entire millennial generation and talking openly about how he thinks the long-gestating "Alien" TV series won't be as good as his movies.
On that last point, the director might well be onto something, especially if we're talking about his original 1979 masterpiece "Alien." The film that kick-started the franchise really stands on its own as a seminal slow burn space horror, showcasing a mastery of mood and atmosphere that, regardless of Scott's other work, will always serve as a testament to the man's greatness. No matter how good the TV show is, it will indeed never be able to supersede something so monumental.
Surprisingly, Scott is actually attached to that TV project as an executive producer, proving...

“Venom: The Last Dance” held top spot at the mainland China box office for the second consecutive weekend. It beat newly released Andy Lau-starring thriller “Cesium Fallout.”
“Venom: The Last Dance” earned RMB104 million ($14.6 million) over the weekend, according to data from consultancy service Artisan Gateway. That is more than 50% lower than its debut weekend, but still lifts the film to a $70.8 million cumulative after 12 days on release. That is a pace very similar to “Alien: Romulus” in China and could see “Venom” among the top three Hollywood films in China this year.
Opening in second place, “Cesium Fallout” earned $9.8 million in its opening weekend. Produced through Hong Kong’s Edko Films and starring Hong Kongers Andy Lau and Karen Mok, the film (previously titled “Burning City” and “Fallout”) is billed as China’s first nuclear radiation disaster film. It was directed by Anthony Pun, with Alibaba Pictures handling the China release.

Though we have very little to go on, legendary director Sir Ridley Scott has revealed that he is developing a new Alien movie for 20th Century Studios.
Details are pretty much non-existent right now, but THR's report indicates that this will be a completely separate project to the Alien: Romulus sequel that's currently in the works.
20th Century's Steve Asbell recently confirmed that director Fede Alvarez is in talks to helm a direct sequel to Romulus that would continue the journey of the survivors of the previous movie, Rain Carradine and her android brother, Andy.
"We’re working on a sequel idea now. We haven’t quite closed our deal with Fede [Alvarez], but we are going to, and he has an idea that we’re working on. The two survivors, Rain and Andy, played by Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson, were real highlights of the film. And so I always think of it like,...

When Ridley Scott shot “Alien” in 1978, he didn’t know it was going to be the hit it became upon release in 1979, nor fully understood the legacy it would have in the decades that followed and continues to this day. Moreover, he was only making his second feature, so when 20th Century Fox contracted him to make the film, it was unlikely he would have been given any rights over any future sequels. However, when Scott revived the franchise in 2012 with “Prometheus,” he wishes his production company Scott Free had fought for a financial stake in the series.
“I should have locked them up, as [Steven] Spielberg did with ‘Jurassic,’ and everything he does, and James Cameron has done with what he has,” Scott said in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “I resurrected a dead ‘Alien’ [franchise] with ‘Prometheus’ and ‘Alien: Covenant,’ and we should have rejoined the ownership right then,...

An exclusive from director Ridley Scott: among his planned upcoming films, including his Bee Gees biopic and Gladiator III, there’s a mystery sci-fi movie.
The perpetually busy Ridley Scott has recently said that he has the next three years planned out in terms of his filmmaking. First up, there’s You Should Be Dancing, his Bee Gees music biopic which should begin production in early 2025 – he previously talked to us about his plans to make a movie that captures the wider music scene of the 1960s and 70s.
Then there’s Gladiator III, which he says has already been storyboarded and at least partially written (though whether or not it’ll be partly set in a gladiatorial arena seems to be somewhat up in the air).
In our conversation with Mr Scott in September, however, another project came up which he hadn’t, at least to our knowledge,...

Ridley Scott, the acclaimed director behind classics such as ‘Blade Runner’ and ‘Gladiator,’ has revealed he’s developing a new film for the ‘Alien‘ franchise.
At 86, Scott continues to influence the cinematic landscape with his sharp, succinct approach to selecting projects.
He advises filmmakers to pitch their ideas concisely: ‘Narrow it down to something very simple and brief — tell me the film in two sentences,’ he insists, emphasizing that the core of a movie pitch should ignite an immediate spark.
This summer, Scott’s production company, Scott Free, saw significant success with ‘Alien: Romulus,’ a surprise hit that grossed $350 million worldwide.
This success has reignited interest in legacy titles under Scott’s banner, leading to new projects like FX’s ‘Alien: Earth’ and Amazon’s ‘Blade Runner: 2099’ series.
Despite his busy schedule, Scott maintains a laid-back attitude about the evolving platforms for storytelling.

In an interview celebrating the 25th anniversary of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, concept and storyboard artist Iain McCaig revealed that George Lucas almost made a major change to the mythology of the Jedi.
In The Phantom Menace, Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) is the apprentice of Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson), but during the development of the film, Lucas had those names switched around. Neeson’s character was named Obi-Wan, and McGregor’s was named Qui-Gon. When Obi-Wan was killed by Darth Maul, Qui-Gon would have taken his name as a tribute.

It was very poignant that at the end, as Obi-Wan dies and Qui-Gon defeats Darth Maul and stays with his Master as he passes away, he not only takes on his Master’s quest,...

When pitching a movie to Ridley Scott, you had better be quick about it. The 86-year-old has a lot on his plate, after all.
“I say, ‘Narrow it down to something very simple and brief — tell me the film in two sentences,’ ” says the renowned and prolific British director of such films as Blade Runner, Alien and Napoleon. “You should light the idea up, and within that you’ve got to have a fuse — a time bomb. When you just have [characters] doing something for something’s sake, that’s dangerous.”
A lit fuse could be, for instance, a group of young scavengers trapped on a derelict space station that’s going to crash into a planet’s rings in 36 hours — the plot of the summer hit Alien: Romulus, which was produced by Scott and his Scott Free production company and surprised the industry by earning $350 million globally.

“Deadpool & Wolverine,” the R-rated and irreverent Marvel mash-up, proved to be big business for Imax, lifting quarterly earnings at a company that has become synonymous with comic book movies. The film delivered $83 million grosses in Imax’s global network of screens — the fifth best result for a Marvel installment. However, the Merc with a Mouth and the X-Man with Adamantium claws couldn’t match J. Robert Oppenheimer’s reign last year.
Overall, revenues at the company topped out at $91.5 million, down 12% from the $103.9 million that Imax logged in the year-ago period when Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” which was filmed with Imax cameras, became one of the biggest hits in its history. Speaking at a Tiffcom seminar, Cai Gongming, founder of Chinese distributor Road Pictures, explained how his company has built up Japanese anime to be one of the strongest film import categories in the mainland China market. And although Chinese audiences remain focused on local, Chinese-language movies, he also said that Hollywood has been making a slow comeback in the market this year.
Road Pictures scored major hits in 2023 with Japanese anime titles Suzume, which grossed $117M, and The First Slam Dunk, which took around $84M. As a result, the total box office of this category in the China market increased by 90% year-on-year.
This year, Cai said the combined box office of Japanese anime movies is on the same level as 2023, although the per picture average is lower as twice as many titles have been released. Road Pictures’ biggest hits have included Spy x Family Code: White, with around $40M, and...

Hungary’s 30% tax incentive for film and TV, which has helped attract recent Hollywood shoots like “Dune: Part Two,” “Maria” and “The Brutalist” to the country, has been extended by six years.
Hungary, continental Europe’s biggest production hub, has attracted direct annual production spend totalling $910 million, a fourfold increase in the last five years.
The extension of the tax incentive was revealed on Monday in Los Angeles by government commissioner for the development of the Hungarian film industry, Csaba Kael, who was in the city to reveal the winners of Hungarian Film Institute’s inaugural awards for Best International Production Filmed in Hungary.
Originally launched in 2004, the Hungarian film support scheme has contributed to such Hollywood films as “Hellboy II: The Golden Army,” “A Good Day to Die Hard,” “The Martian” and “Terminator: Dark Fate.” Other international productions to have filmed in Hungary include “Poor Things,” Ridley Scott’s “Alien: Romulus,...

Let’s face it – Alien movies are not created equal. In my Alien: Romulus review, I noted that there have really only ever been two flawless films in the franchise, with the rest all having moments of genius (well – most of them) but none measuring up to the first two movies in the saga. All of this makes Alien movie rankings quite controversial, as it’s a divisive topic. So, how does our Alien movies ranked list shape up? Let’s dive right in, shall we?
Alien Vs Predator: Requiem (2007)
I honestly couldn’t believe Fox had the gall to release this as a legit entry into the franchise in 2007. At the time, the studio had a bad reputation for putting out half-baked and cheap genre fare (made even more frustrating by how many were based on top-notch properties). This was the nadir of both the Alien and Predator franchises.

Hungary has decided to continue a key tax incentive program that encourages international film and television productions in the country. The program offers production companies a 30% cash rebate on local spending and has attracted hundreds of major Hollywood movies and TV shows over the past two decades. The Hungarian government announced an extension of the popular incentive through 2030 during an event promoting the nation’s film industry in Los Angeles last month.
The production tax rebate was established in 2004 and has become a driving force behind Hungary’s growing reputation as a premiere European filming destination. According to government figures, productions utilizing the incentive now generate around $910 million annually for Hungary’s economy. With over 100 international projects filming there each year, the country has developed experienced crews and infrastructure to support large-scale movies and television series.

Hungary’s 30% tax incentive for film and series productions has been extended for six more years.
The announcement was made by the Hungarian film commissioner Csaba Kael at the inaugural Made in Hungary event — a celebration of productions shot in the Central European country — in Los Angeles yesterday. The incentive will now run until 2030.
Hungary has become a popular shooting location for Hollywood productions in recent years thanks to its generous incentive program and experienced production crews. The incentive offers film and series projects produced in Hungary a 30% rebate based on their expenditure spent in the country. The scheme is part of the country’s film support program. The financial support is provided as a cash refund post-financing.
Recent international productions filmed in Hungary include Alien: Romulus, The Brutalist, Dune: Prophecy, NBC’s The Day of the Jackal, Pablo Larrain’s Maria, FBI: International, NCIS, and the Now You See Me series.

Two films shared top spots on VOD charts. The newly released “Transformers One” (Paramount) leads at Fandango (which ranks by revenue), while “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” (Warner Bros.) in its third week returned to #1 at iTunes (calculating by transactions). Both films rent for $19.99.
Netflix continues its string of originals placing first on its top 10 movie list (briefly interrupted by “Bad Boys Ride or Die”), with “Don’t Move” (a horror/thriller with Sam Raimi as one of the producers) taking over the #1 spot.
“The Wild Robot” (Universal), still the #3 film in theaters this weekend, placed second on both charts (it was #1 once during the week at iTunes). “Transformers One” is fourth at iTunes, though it was #1 initially earlier in the week. “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” is #3 at Fandango.
Now in its second week, “Alien: Romulus” (Disney), renting at an unusually high $24.99 (as are “The Wild Robot” and “Deadpool & Wolverine”), dropped #5 at Fandango and #7 at iTunes.
