Madness and misfortune darken the doorstep of the 2024 Chattanooga Film Festival with Adrien Beau’s The Vourdalak, celebrating its North American premiere after an acclaimed run on the European festival circuit. Like an accidental renaissance rendition of Pet Sematary or a Napoleonic re-telling of Salem’s Lot, this French nightmare is a lush and looney folk tale of grave misfortunes. And monsters! Here be monsters…
Shot on film and featuring some incredible moments of handmade horror, The Vourdalak is, yes, a Period Piece- but not a Period Piece that haters of Period Pieces should immediately disregard. I get it, fancy talk and frilly garments aren’t for everyone…but how about live-sized puppets of skeletal ghouls with long boney fingers that stalk in the shadows at night and feast on the blood of the living? How ’bout them Elizabethan apples!? The Vourdalak is like Jim Henson meets The Brothers Grimm, filtered...

From its opening moments, Moon Garden invites you into a secret world. It is a world seen through the eyes of a four year old that carries its own magic even before the tragic events that kick the plot into motion take place. It is a world where imagination can make anything possible, where make-believe is as real as anything and where the purest form of home and safety reside in the love of a little girls’ parents.
Written and directed by Ryan Stevens Harris, Moon Garden is a visually-stunning and heartfelt journey through the darkness and back home. Emma (Haven Lee Harris) lives a happy life with her parents. Well, almost happy. Her parents are both loving, wonderful people in their own right, who both clearly care for Emma a great deal. But it’s clear from the first few moments that their marriage is crumbling. Her father Alex...

Anyone who grew up in a dysfunctional household knows just how traumatic childhood can be. In Moon Garden, writer/director Ryan Stevens Harris visualizes those traumas as the nightmarish denizens of the dark, industrial wasteland that a young girl finds herself trapped in.
Emma lives with her parents Sara and Alex. They love Emma, but they don’t love each other anymore. After getting a scare one night she runs to their room, only to encounter something even scarier, the two of them in the midst of a loud, intense argument. Running from it she trips and takes a fall down the stairs which leaves her in a coma. Her struggle to awake from it becomes a nightmarish trip...

There’s nothing like a young, naïve protagonist to introduce viewers to a fantasy world where the rules are uncertain and everything is full of wonder. It’s no wonder, then, that child protagonists have traditionally been popular in the genre, in both literature and film, even in stories which are really aimed at adults. What’s rare is to see a film whose creators have really understood that a child is not just a small adult – that as well as having limited knowledge, children have a completely different way of relating to the world, an animal perspective which only time will tame. Ryan Stevens Harris’ Moon Garden invites viewers to explore not only another world but a very different perspective.
First of all, it has to be said that none of this would be possible without Haven Lee Harris, the most extraordinary preschool age child actor since Woodrow Graves in 2017’s [film.
