I've read the negative reviews and, thankfully, they were nowhere near true. Of the most vociferous are those that say the plot is impossible, or cast aspersions on how it wasn't a comedy when it was billed as a horror comedy. First, what slasher movie doesn't have some sort of impossible aspects to the plot? There's always a level of "faith" we must go on when watching any good fictional movie. Second, while not plausible, the plot certainly doesn't demand a big leap in faith, so this aspect is just moot. Last, if the only thing one can gripe about is that the categorization is incorrect then he/she needs to stop reviewing movies.
I put this film off for a long time, but boy am I glad I finally watched it. Everything about it is smart, fresh, and original. The acting was believable - Nicholas Hope and the ever-cute Kelly Paterniti do phenomenal jobs in their roles- the direction, film, and sound were very good, the script was excellent, and the special fx were very good. AND...no time is wasted getting down to brass tax. Within 10 minutes the film is knee-deep in to the plot and doesn't let up.
Probably the smartest piece of the film is the script. While some categorize the film as a horror comedy, it isn't true comedy. It is a straight up slasher with some dark and very subtle knee slappers, if you will. Most of these examples are not "ha-ha" funny, but deeply ironic in nature, often done by way of subtle nods to the source. I LOVE this type of crafty inclusion in films, when done correctly like this.
Re: parental content
- profanity: plenty, but not gratuitous
- sexual content: one scene of female breasts and content, but no sexual acts or other
- intense situations: by the nature of the film there are several, but none are too disturbing
- violence/gore: plenty! I'm a gorehound, and while I wish there had been more pure gore, there is indeed enough to keep those looking for it interested. Some painful-to-watch scenes, and loads of blood. In all honesty, there was more blood and gore than I expected to see. Well done!
So glad I watched this. I like torture flicks, and I just didn't get the sense this would be as intense or as bloody/gory when reading the synopsis. Thankfully, I finally watched, and it is an all around smart, well done, enjoyable slasher film.
