Tim Burton has always been an outlier in Hollywood. He's a filmmaker with a distinct, peculiar aesthetic and set of interests, yet his movies have broad appeal and are remarkably consistent in the way they perform financially. Even Burton's weakest franchise films bear the sort of directorial hallmarks that are often missing from tentpoles in the 21st century. Indeed, say what you will against his "Dark Shadows," but only Burton could have enough pull to get a $150 million movie reboot of a cult '60s soap opera oddity green-lit in 2012 while also making it precisely the way he wanted. It's the same reason the critically-derided horror-comedy has found its share of defenders.
Be that as it may, having to deal with the relentless friction between creativity and commerce has taken its toll on Burton in the past. His 1996 sci-fi...

Or maybe you’re looking for something else to stream next that still has that Stars Hollow spirit. If that’s the case, we’ve got you covered. Whether you’re looking for crackling romantic comedy, grounded high school drama, or some popcorn flicks you could imagine Lorelai and Rory making a marathon night out of, here are a few titles to fill that Gilmore-shaped hole in your heart.

Beyond the city streets lie mysterious pocket worlds harboring untold treasures and terrors. New Eridu’s intrepid “Hollow Raiders” seek fortune in these shattered landscapes known as Hollows, guided from afar by gifted hackers called Proxies. You play as a proxy named Belle or Wise, helping Raiders plumb the depths of such places from the safety of your video shop.
Using cybernetically linked drones called Bangboos, you see through a Raider’s eyes and assist their exposure. Each hollow presents a different maze of ruined cityscapes styled as flickering television screens. Solving puzzles and skirmishing foes alike, Raiders advance towards objectives while you watch for dangers. Combat sees Raider trios starring flashy attacks, clever uses of elemental powers, and well-timed teamwork.
Though hollow diving grows riskier over time, rewards make the risk worthwhile. Various missions task Raiders with scavenging loot, battling monsters, or unraveling mysteries. Currencies let Proxy and Raider alike upgrade gear,...

Godzilla and Kong have smashed their last building for Adam Wingard. At least for now.
Wingard, who has directed the last two of Legendary’s hit MonsterVerse movies, will not be returning for a third installment, multiple sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.
The parting of ways is described as amicable and stemming from timing issues. The door remains open for a future return, per insiders.
Wingard is coming off directing and co-writing Godzilla x Kong: New Empire, which has grossed over $564 million worldwide since its March 29 domestic opening. Wingard, who didn’t have a deal for any new installment, said he had more stories to tell during the press tour but also unveiled a new original feature project that he wanted to tackle before another monster movie. That project, an action thriller titled Onslaught, was picked up in a competitive sale by A24 and is prepping for a fall shoot.

Recently, a quote about Disney canceling Tinker Bell for being problematic has circulated around the internet, attributed to a “Disney representative.”
The alleged quote reads:
“Tinkerbell, unfortunately, has become an problematic image for our guests; specifically, young girls. Specifically, in terms of the portrayal of an unrealistic body image as well as dependency of approval and/or attention from Peter Pan, as seen in previous incarnations of the character. We feel these traits are no longer representive of our inclusive focused values and thus, are currently in process of redesigning an updated Tinkerbell for modern audiences.”

I can’t say for 100% certainty that it is not true, but I have several reasons for believing that it is not.

The 2024 Eurovision Song Contest is now right on our doorstep. Organized by the European Broadcasting Union (Ebu), the Eurovision Song Contest is the most famous, extravagant music competition in existence with various European countries competing to be crowned the year’s winner and host the next year’s competition.
Before the grand final, however, two semi-finals take place. The top 10 in each semi-final then go through to the final, where they are joined by the host country (the winner of the previous year) and the Big Five — who all qualify automatically. Then, each country performs and vies for votes.
After the performances, every member of the Ebu dials in and dishes out 1-8, 10, and 12 points to their favorite songs – with the points decided via a combination of public votes and jury decisions in each country. Whichever country amasses the most points wins.
The two semi-finals took place earlier this week on May 7 and May 9, respectively,...

The MonsterVerse keeps getting bigger and bigger, with the TV series "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters" landing a second season on Apple TV+ (along with multiple other spin-offs in the works) and "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" becoming the highest grossing Godzilla movie ever. (In case you missed it, you can check out our review of the latest monster mash right here.) The film takes place after Godzilla and Kong -- having joined forces for their battle against Mechagodzilla in "Godzilla vs. Kong" -- divide the planet between them. Godzilla stays on the surface, sleeping on the Roman Colosseum like a cat, while Kong goes on a little bachelor adventure in Hollow Earth.
However, things get complicated when Kong encounters a civilization of giant apes and winds up in a fight with their leader, Skar King. This leads to a larger battle against an army of giant apes and a...

The tour (get tickets here) features Metallica performing two completely unique sets (no repeat songs) over two nights in each city, with different support acts each evening. They’ll be right back at MetLife on Sunday (August 6th), with Five Finger Death Punch and Ice Nine Kills opening.
The setup has the bands performing in the round, on a circular stage in the middle of the stadium, with some fans in the “Snakepit” (the center of the circle).
While there was a forecast for thunderstorms on Friday night, that never came to be, making for a comfortable summer evening in New Jersey.

The revamped Pantera embarked on the band’s first North American headlining tour in 22 years on Friday, July 28th, in Burgettstown, Pennsylvania.
Notably, the encore consisted of the Far Beyond Driven cuts “Slaughtered” and “Revolution Is My Name,” the first time either song had been played live by Pantera since 2001.
The rest of the setlist included many of the Pantera staples and album cuts the group has been playing during its previous one-off festival performances and overseas dates.
“A New Level” from Vulgar Display of Power opened the set, and from there Philip Anselmo and company played classics such as “Mouth for War,” “I’m Broken, “5 Minutes Alone,” and their cover of Black Sabbath’s “Planet Caravan,” among others. Anselmo and the audience then broke into a chorus of “Happy Birthday” for bassist Rex Brown, who turned 59 the day before.

“A Sense of Place,” a collection of six short films by young Iranian directors, had its world premiere this week at Copenhagen’s Cph:Dox. The films are inspired by Wim Wenders’ eponymous 2005 book, and the Oscar nominated director – best known for “Paris, Texas,” “Wings of Desire,” “Buena Vista Social Club” and “Pina” – served as the project’s “godfather,” he explained at the festival.
Curated by Iranian producer Afsun Moshiry in collaboration with The Wim Wenders’ Foundation, which supports young directors and innovative filmmaking, the anthology takes viewers on a journey that starts in Iran, travels to the country’s southern border, onto a plane to Germany, and ends up in France, where two of the films are shot.
The idea for the collection was born from a Wenders retrospective and masterclass Moshiry was planning in Iran in 2019, which never happened because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Instead, Wenders mentored the...

Gilmore Girls was guest star Adam Shapiro’s big break. His first professional job, after landing a role on The Andy Dick Show as an intern, Shapiro has worked steadily ever since. Gilmore Girls was also his biggest celebrity encounter, and not the cast of the show. The filming of Gilmore Girls overlapped with NBC megahit Friends, and Shapiro met the Friends stars via Gilmore Girls.

What if E.T. and CJ7 had a movie baby? Versatile director Ham Tran attempts to answer that question in his latest film, Maika, making its debut in the Kids section of the 2022 Sundance Film Festival. Tran has dipped his toe into a number of genres over the years, starting with his heart wrenching first film, Vietnam-exodus drama, Journey From the Fall (2006), through to his horror film, Hollow (2014), and crime thriller, Bitcoin Heist (2016). Never one to sit still for too long, Tran’s latest is one of Vietnam’s first science fiction features with Maika, a giddy hodge-podge of familiar kids’ movie tropes assembled into a delightfully wacky adventure that is sure to delight the pre-tween set. (This article contains detailed story spoilers for “Godzilla vs Kong”)
What with “Godzilla vs Kong” being the culmination of the Monsterverse franchise, you might have been surprised to learn that it’s under two hours long — a rarity in this age of lengthy megablockbusters. But there is a price to that sort of efficiency.
I’ve watched “Godzilla vs Kong” a few times now, and it’s pretty clear that we ended up with a pretty slimmed down version of this story. It’s a point made with emphasis when Lance Reddick shows up late in the film to deliver a single unimportant line before being completely forgotten. It’s tough to imagine Reddick wasn’t supposed to have a significantly larger role.
Likewise for Kyle Chandler’s character, who returns from “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” and does absolutely nothing at any point. My guess is that they only...

As someone who has been a fan of all the recent Monsterverse movies to varying degrees thus far, I can confidently say that Godzilla vs. Kong is easily the best of the bunch, as director Adam Wingard does a great job of not only celebrating both of these cinematic titans in ways that are befitting of their long-standing legacies, but also gives fans what they’re looking for out of this kind of a “versus” film: a winner. Admittedly, though, even though GvK gives us a definitive conqueror between these oversized beasts, the real winners in the end are all the monster buffs out there who have been waiting decades to see Big G take on Skull Island’s most famous resident, because it delivers in ways I was not expecting.

The moment gamers have been waiting the last 12 months for has finally arrived. Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 are now in the hands – assuming you managed to get a pre-order in, of course – of those they were intended for, ushering in an all-new generation of adventures boasting unparalleled visual fidelity, performance and scope. Microsoft and Sony may be somewhat late to the party, so to speak, for those who primarily consume their games on high end PC rigs, but with the minimum bar now raised (and last-gen retired), folks from all camps can expect to see publisher and developer alike push the boundaries of what was thought possible.

Nicole Beharie is speaking out about what led to her exit from Sleepy Hollow. Back in 2016, the Fox series ended its third season by killing off the popular Abbie (Beharie), one half of its main duo. The news was met with confusion even from co-star Tom Mison, who played Ichabod Crane, who said at London McM Comic Con that he always thought of his own character as Abbie's sidekick. "Abbie is the one the audience can relate to so when you're entering this insane world of Sleepy Hollow, you go with Abbie. She's been the guide and Ichabod is this insane man in the periphery," he said. Fox called Abbie's death a "dramatic ending" and "a bold move," and later...

The truth is out, and that can only mean one thing.
Drama!
There were a lot of things happening on Legacies Season 2 Episode 6 to the point that it felt like some of the storylines were not done justice.
More happened on "That's Nothing I Had to Remember" than happened on the entire series up until this installment.
It felt very reminiscent of an episode of The Vampire Diaries at its peak, but I'm not sure that style of storytelling works for Legacies.
Josie's trip to New Orleans was frustrating. Her thirst to get rid of Hope almost put the character past the point of no return.
If you watch Legacies online, you know Josie has been flirting with darkness thanks to that pesky professor, but she genuinely considered not restoring to everyone their memories Hope.
So, tell me, how is it we've both forgot the same person?

For director Elaine McMillion Sheldon, the documentary “Heroin(e)” was personal. Her Oscar-nominated short follows three women in Huntington, West Virginia, trying to help victims of the opioid epidemic. A resident of the state, which leads the nation in drug overdose deaths, Sheldon wanted to make the film because the crisis has “impacted a lot of people I know in a very personal way.” But rather than paint a bleak portrait, Sheldon hoped to shine a light on “the people on the ground actually working towards change every day.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Sheldon above.
