Artem Vasilyev, the Russian producer and CEO of Metrafilms and its animation arm Studio Metrafilms, has launched the new label Lazy Sunday, based in Ireland and dedicated to developing and producing both animation and live-action projects for international audiences.

The new outfit will serve as a bridge linking Western Europe with Eastern Europe, Vasilyev hopes, while also connecting with his current base of operations in Moldova.

Now that the entire entertainment industry is firmly sliding on a downward slope following the peak of streaming, it seems that no TV series — no matter how beloved or endlessly quoted — is safe from the content cuts that have become company-wide policy under Zaslav’s leadership.

While streaming has made it easier to binge our favorite shows and movies all in one place, it also means that titles we’ve loved for years can become inaccessible at a moment’s notice. The corporations that own Netflix, Max, Hulu, and others now have the ability to truncate their catalogs in an attempt to present a leaner library and save costs, often at the expense of series and films that consumers love.

Cartoon Network became the latest victim of this phenomenon recently as fans of the iconic brand can no longer visit the cable channel’s website, which has been a fixture of the web since the late 1990s. The URL cartoonnetwork.com now redirects to Max’s website. It leaves the future of the shows from Cartoon Network in question, especially because there is no clarity on what will remain on Max and what will be lost to faint millennial memories.

Warner Bros. Discovery this week pulled the entire contents of cartoonnetwork.com offline — redirecting visitors to a landing page on Max, its subscription-streaming service, encouraging fans to sign up to watch their favorite Cartoon Network shows. After serving the retro animation community proudly for seven years, the classic cartoon streaming service Boomerang will cease to exist at the end of September — and this time, it’s not coming back.

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO and president David Zaslav seems to have a bit of a love/hate relationship with his company’s immense library of classic works of art. He loves purging old Warner Bros. films from the Max streaming library, and he hates it when subscribers watch anything older than the pilot episode of Milf Manor. In Zaslav’s post-art, pro-”content” business model for Max, the streaming hub for Warner Bros. Discovery’s most culturally significant IP becomes even more bare-bones with each round of cuts, and the original shows and movies produced by Max oftentimes face cancellation after post-production and pre-premiere, leaving solidly screen-tested films like Coyote vs. Acme in a permanent state of inaccessibility to the average subscriber.

Warner Bros. Discovery is shutting down the Boomerang streaming service and moving some of its programming, which includes many classic cartoon series, onto Max.

The kids-and-family move is set for September 30, according to an email to subscribers.

It comes in the same year as a similar strategic shift by Paramount Global, which shuttered Noggin and moved its content onto flagship Paramount+.

Boomerang, which began as a cable network in 2000 featuring a range of animated classics like Scooby Doo, Tom & Jerry and Loony Tunes, became a streaming service in 2017. In more recent years, it expanded into original programming.

Subscriber numbers for Boomerang were never divulged. The niche offering is considerably cheaper than Max, but Wbd told subscribers their plans would be converted to the ad-free version of Max at no extra charge. Boomerang is $6 a month, while the ad-free tier of Max is $17.

Boomerang will be shut down next month, and its catalog of shows — including “Scooby-Doo,” “Looney Tunes,” “Tom and Jerry,” “The Flintstones,” “Courage the Cowardly Dog” and more — will become part of Max. “As of September 30, 2024, the Boomerang app and website will no longer be available,” the service says in a notice on its customer website.

When Stuart Snyder took over in mid-2007, he had a brand new mandate for Cartoon Network — no weird stuff.

Speaking with Buzzfeed, "The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack" creator Thurop Van Orman recalled Snyder saying, "'We don't want anything weird or anything where any mom would come out of the kitchen and say, 'What are you watching?'"

In 2021, Season 7 of the show was announced for the Warner Bros.-owned Max (formerly HBO Max service) along with a movie; however, since then, the studio has remained fairly silent on both projects from the animated franchise.

Exclusive: Veteran actress, comedian and musician Kate Micucci (Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities) has launched development on Toy, a new animated series based on the popular Keenspot comic book created by Brett Murphy and Wilson Gandolpho. In addition to producing, Micucci will star and create music for the cartoon, having already recorded a first pass of the theme song.

Tobi Wilson, who serves as Senior Writer for Cartoon Network’s long-running hit The Amazing World of Gumball, is attached as showrunner and co-producer. Finland-based animation studio Gigglebug Entertainment is launching a new adult-focused label and has already begun developing its first project, Variety can confirm.

Branded In Stitches and led by Gigglebug’s management team, the banner will focus on bold, experimental and offbeat comedy aimed at grown-ups. Contemporary voices as well as artists and designers from Gigglebug’s in-house team will be brought in to pitch adult-oriented concepts and work on projects from the new banner.

The first project from In Stitches, which the company are set to present at Mipcom next month, is titled “Soap.” The 20-episode series is based on an original concept by Gigglebug animator Sasil Leirana and is told from the perspective of a bar of hotel soap called Suds.

“When affairs unravel marriages, a drug deal blows up (literally) or a serial killer repaints the walls red, who is there to clean up the mess? Soap,” reads the synopsis.

A new comic book special will bring Buffy the Vampire Slayer's fans back to the original TV show continuity. Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Lost Summer is a one-shot coming in May 2023 from Boom! Studios, which sees the Scooby Gang going on a road trip to recover the last copy of William Pratt's, aka Spike, embarrassing poetry.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Lost Summer #1 is written by Casey Gilly, with art by Lauren Knight and colors by Francesco Segala. Former Hasbro exec Finn Arnesen has been tapped as chief operating officer of U.K. production company Two Daughters Entertainment.

Arnesen’s remit will be to expand the company’s IP portfolio and increase revenue across the business by implementing a creative and commercial strategy. He will report to James Reatchlous, Two Daughters’ founder and CEO.

At Hasbro, Arnesen was senior VP of local distribution and development at the company’s in-house studio, overseeing properties including “My Little Pony” and “Transformers.” He has also worked at “Warhammer” owner Games Workshop and Cartoon Network, where he developed and launched original IP such as “The Amazing World of Gumball.”

Two Daughters is best known for kids’ animation “Moley,” which features the voices of Warwick Davis, Jessica Henwick, Stanley Tucci and Gemma Arterton. It is available in the U.S. on Warner Bros Discovery’s Boomerang as well as free-to-air network Pop in the U.

Exclusive: Australia’s Princess Productions is acquiring Irish firm Boulder Media from toy giant Hasbro, we’ve learned.

The deal is the most notable M&a on the international animation market for a while. It closed earlier this month and gives Princess expanded production services capabilities for its in-house and third-party projects and allow it push into development in Ireland. Financial terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.

Boulder is one of Ireland’s largest animation studios, having worked on Hasbro’s Transformers and My Little Pony franchises and TV shows such as Go Jetters and Danger Mouse. Its sale to Hasbro in 2016 was considered a major sign of intent by the U.S. toy manufacturer’s desire to make and own more content. Hasbro later acquired Pepper Pig and Pj Masks owner eOne but is now focusing more on Hasbro-branded IP and has its other entertainment assets under strategic review.

The BAFTA has revealed nominations for its Children and Young People Awards, which are returning for the first time in three years.

The BBC’s “Dodger” and “The Snail and the Whale” lead with three nominations each, followed by two nominations for “The Amazing World of Gumball,” “Jamie Johnson,” “JoJo & Gran Gran” and “Silverpoint.”

The ceremony will take place in London on Nov. 27, where 14 categories will be awarded in recognition of craft, performance, and games. All awards are voted on by BAFTA’s membership of children’s industry professionals. The ceremony will be hosted by TV and radio presenter Lindsey Russell.

Cannes — Top European powerhouse Studiocanal has renewed its global deal with Nickelodeon which will board Season 3 of CG animated megahit “The Adventures of Paddington.”

Marking most surely one of the biggest single title content deals unveiled at this year’s Mipcom, the Nickelodeon renewal for Season 3 comes as Studiocanal has also unveiled a slew of second-window deals on Season 1 after the title’s hugely successful global rollout overseen, like Season 2, by Nickelodeon. It comes, moreover, just months after Studiocanal announced in June that Dougal Wilson is attached to direct “Paddington” 3, the third feature film in the franchise.

HBO Max is canceling yet another group of animated series and films? Must be a day that ends in "Y." 

After last week's proverbial bloodbath of scrubbing nearly 40 mostly animated series, 20 of which were HBO Max exclusives, from the streaming platform, we've recently learned that the hit to animation hasn't stopped yet. According to Variety, six more upcoming animated projects have been canceled, including "Batman: Caped Crusader," the follow-up to "Batman: The Animated Series" from executive producers Bruce Timm, J.J. Abrams, and Matt Reeves.

Additional projects getting the shaft include "Merry Little Batman," "Did I Do That to the Holidays: A Steve Urkel Story," "The Amazing World of Gumball: The Movie," and two different "Looney Tunes" films, "The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie" and "Bye Bye Bunny: A Looney Tunes Musical." HBO Max continues its baffling decisions regarding its animated programming, with six animated projects no longer making their way to the direct-to-consumer streaming platform, TheWrap has confirmed.

Among the projects that will no longer stream on the platform: “Batman: The Caped Crusader,” from “The Batman” director Matt Reeves, J.J. Abrams and comic book luminary Ed Brubaker; “Did I Do That to the Holidays: A Steve Urkel Story,” an animated “Family Matters” spinoff; and two high-profile “Looney Tunes” features.

While those projects are still in development, some of which are pretty far along, TheWrap has confirmed that “Driftwood,” an original HBO Max animated feature from Victor Courtright, has been fully canceled.
