My annual mathematical Tony predictions are meant to focus attention on the shows that received nominations, but almost as notable this year is what’s missing. A number of shows either missed the cutoff or never opened at all, due to the sudden shutdown of Broadway as the pandemic began.
That includes musical revivals of West Side Story, Company, and Caroline, or Change. As a result, not a single musical revival is up for Tonys this year. Add in The Lightning Thief getting completely shut out, and we’re down to just three shows eligible for any of the musical categories covered in this article: Jagged Little ...

An episode of NPR’s “Fresh Air” featuring Adam Driver was scheduled to air this month, but host Terry Gross surprised viewers when she announced last week’s episode would instead be a re-run of an interview with Conan O’Brien. “[We] had promised you an interview with actor Adam Driver today, but unfortunately, we weren’t able to do it as planned,” Gross told listeners. According to a report from The Daily Beast, Driver’s “Fresh Air” interview was canned after the actor walked out of the discussion. Driver was on “Fresh Air” to promote “Marriage Story” but left “after expressing displeasure at the idea of listening to a clip of himself singing ‘Being Alive’ from the musical ‘Company,'” according to a source.
Driver has long been resistant to watching or listening to his acting work. The actor appeared on “Fresh Air” in 2015 and told Gross, “I’ve watched myself or listened to myself before,...

There are few TV shows with as much obsessive attention to detail as “Documentary Now!” That’s probably why it came as no surprise to series co-creators Alex Buono and Rhys Thomas that one shot of Cate Blanchett riding a mini tricycle in a massive Hungarian courtyard ended up taking a big chunk of an entire day.
“There was one moment in it where she’s riding on a tricycle in the square. And that’s on screen for like five seconds. And that probably cost us about five hours to get that shot. When you’re shooting for four days total, that was an expensive shot to get. But it’s worth it because they’re just going to take place as her somewhere,” Buono told IndieWire.

The Eyes of Laura Mars (1978) was an unpopular thriller with a clever premise. Laura would have visions whenever a killer attacked someone, and she witnessed the murders through his eyes. Naturally, TV had to take a crack at the premise, which brought us Mind Over Murder (1979), a thriller that adds a few wrinkles to the basic premise and ends up being the more enjoyable of the two.
Originally airing on October 23rd as part of The CBS Tuesday Night Movies, Mind Over Murder bore down against NBC Tuesday Night at the Movies and ABC’s Three’s Company/Taxi/Hart to Hart lineup. Not hard to tell where the majority of viewers planted their eyeballs this night, but those who stayed with “the eye” were treated to a mostly effective thriller with some genuinely unsettling moments. You shouldn’t have too much Tripper in your diet, after all.

Julianna Margulies has a Harvey Weinstein story of her own — and an eerily similar one involving Steven Seagal. The actress recalled both incidents on Sirius Xm’s “Just Jenny Show,” according to Deadline, telling host Jenny Hutt that she met both the actor and the producer in their hotel rooms, which she was led to by female assistants who she now says “were leading me to the lion’s den.”

Margulies, best known for her starring role on “The Good Wife,” was 23 during the alleged incident with Seagal. She was told a female casting director would be in his hotel room as well, but arrived the find the “Under Siege” star alone. “I saw his gun, which I had never seen a gun in real life,” recalls Margulies, who managed to leave Seagal’s room “unscathed.

The day The New York Times broke the Harvey Weinstein story, I found myself choking back bile all day.
In the weeks since, it has become resoundingly clear that Weinstein is a virulent serial predator, and has earned whatever hell rains down on him. But Harvey Weinstein isn’t the problem, and bringing him down — while satisfying, necessary, and just — will be far from sufficient if we don’t simultaneously tear down our rotten corporate culture and reckon with our own complicity in propping it up.
As democracy derives its consent from the governed, tyranny derives its consent from the tyrannized. And while it’s long overdue, I no longer consent to being tyrannized.
I wasn’t sexually harassed by Harvey Weinstein. I worked with him briefly, consulting on “sex, lies, and videotape,” the film that changed the independent film business, Sundance, and Harvey forever; the film whose prescient title...

There is simply no one like Stephen Sondheim. The living legend has arguably had the greatest singular impact on the genre of musical theatre. One of his most brilliant and rich works is Follies, originally produced on Broadway in 1971. Penny Lancaster revealed she was the victim of rape during her early career as a model.
During an episode of Loose Women where the panel discussed sexual harassment and assault, the 46-year-old wife of music icon Rod Stewart opened up about her own terrifying experience.
Lancaster explained that she had a job with a fashion designer who offered her to tag along to an industry event, according to Express.
“I was like, ‘Oh, someone might be interested. I might be able to get some more work,’ and that’s what you were out there doing as a model,” she recalled.

Two words are showing victims of sexual assault and harassment that the problem is much larger than many imagine: “me too.”
The phrase began trending on Twitter after Alyssa Milano took to the social media site on Sunday with an idea she said was suggested by a friend.
“If all the women who have been sexually harassed or assaulted wrote ‘Me too’ as a status, we might give people a sense of the magnitude of the problem,” wrote the actress, who starred on Charmed with Rose McGowan, one of the numerous women who recently accused producer Harvey Weinstein of sexually harassing or assaulting her.

Harvey Weinstein’s involvement in two high-profile Amazon series, from David O. Russell and Matthew Weiner, already appeared to be limited. But with the sexual assault charges piling up against Weinstein, and his subsequent firing from the company (and concurrent fall from Hollywood power), the streaming service is giving everything a second look.
“We are reviewing our options for the projects we have with the Weinstein Co.,” Craig Berman, VP communications at Amazon Entertainment, said in a statement to press. Another spokesperson confirmed the news.
That means an uncertain future for “The Romanoffs,” from Weiner, as well as Russell’s untitled drama starring Robert De Niro and Julianne Moore. Amazon’s decision to give both projects a review comes a day after Apple Music canceled plans for a scripted series about Elvis Presley from the Weinstein Company.

Enter The Dragon needs no introduction. 40+ years on and its imagery is still the first thing that springs to mind when most people think 'kung fu'. Bruce Lee’s physicality in the film is off the scale, staging and performing some of the best, most brutal and impactful onscreen fights ever. Jim Kelly oozes Blaxploitation cool. Lalo Schifrin’s orientalist funk soundtrack is the height of 70s chic. The movie looks great, sounds great and hits hard.
However, you’ll rarely hear much praise for the plot. Lee plays, uh, 'Lee', a shaolin monk who’s hired by a British intelligence agency to infiltrate the island stronghold of a rogue shaolin called Han, who’s into human trafficking, drug running and world domination. When a sitting President of the United States sides with Nazis, jokes just don’t cut it anymore.
After the pro-Nazi rallies in Charlottesville – which led to three deaths last weekend – and President Donald Trump’s horrifying statements in response to the rise of white nationalist groups in America, late night talk shows are trying out a new tone.
Hosts are jumping in and taking on a sitting U.S. president like they’ve never done before. There’s still room for jokes as the hosts convey their views – but as things turn serious, they’re taking a stand and using their voice to the fight against tyranny.

Chicago – Writer/Director Taylor Sheridan is a deep thinker regarding humanity in these United States. In the third film of his “American Frontier Trilogy” – after “Sicario” and “Hell or High Water” – he goes to the Wyoming Native American reservation, for a unwieldy story titled “Wind River.”
Rating: 2.5/5.0
“Wind River” is definitely the weakest of the trilogy, suffering from a meandering uncertainty as to what it wanted to be. Did it want to be a cop procedural? It got off track from the main case several times, confusing the issue. Did it want to be a morality tale? Jeremy Renner, as the local authority, kept making emotional and poignant speeches that went nowhere. Finally, did it want to be an American frontier story, as the trilogy is so named? It certainly went to one of the last frontiers in the rough reservation lands of Wyoming, and the cinematography was properly breathtaking,...

Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series.Much of David Lynch's work is about regression, or regressiveness, about people who are most comfortable when indulging (really, hiding behind) their baser instincts. An acid-jazz saxophonist with murder on his mind might take refuge in the body and soul of a teenage delinquent (Lost Highway), or a midwestern girl who has played and lost the Hollywood game might concoct a candy-colored dream-life in which she finally attains Tinseltown stardom (Mulholland Dr.). But these escapes always prove to be traps, and cyclical ones at that. What goes around comes around. What has happened before will happen again. Even Blue Velvet's Dorothy Vallens (Isabella Rossellini), finally liberated from her abusive sexual relationship with Frank Booth (Dennis Hopper), "still can see blue velvet through my tears.

One of the most exciting things about PBS’s time at the Television Critics Association press tour is that, over the course of two days, critics get exposed to programming that covers an incredibly diverse range of subjects, from deep space exploration to nature to great poets to world-changing wars. But this summer, many of the panels took at least a moment to acknowledge the currently precarious state of public television programming in the United States, due to a proposed federal budget that would eliminate funding for PBS.
As reported on Sunday, PBS president and CEO Paula Kerger explained to critics that should the proposed budget go through, PBS had “no Plan B” for what would happen next. Many of the other speakers who appeared over the following two days had plenty to say about what effect this would have on the kind of programming they create, should this budget pass.

The best thing about Classic Stage Company's small-scale, extensively trimmed production of Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman's extraordinarily-written 1976 musical, Pacific Overtures, is a chance to see a terrific ensemble of actors taken from the New York stage's severely underutilized pool of Asian-American talent. The company includes notables of the musical stage such as Ann Harada, Orville Mendoza, Thom Sesma and Marc Oka.

Franco Zeffirelli once remarked that directors rarely staged Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” effectively, because they either emphasized the comedy or the drama and rarely got the right balance. The same could be said of almost any musical written by Stephen Sondheim. Back in the 1970s, director Hal Prince almost always got it right, from “Company” to “Sweeney Todd.” Broadway theatergoers didn’t know how lucky we were. In hindsight, we do, thanks to John Doyle. Doyle almost always gets it wrong, making Sondheim’s shows all about the angst. His most egregious failure was the 2006 Broadway revival of “Company,” which excised all.

A longtime actor on television and stage, over the past six years George Takei has become a star of a new medium: social media. Through Facebook and Twitter, the 79-year-old actor -- most notable for his years as Hikaru Sulu on Star Trek and its subsequent films -- has become known for his memes and wit, but also, lately, his social activism. Using the platforms on which he’s cultivated an engaged audience, Takei has been able to defend Nina Davuluri from racist commentary after she was named Miss America 2014 and raise money to fund a web series addressing the Boy Scouts’ (now former) anti-gay policies. Lately, he’s become more outspoken, defending millions of Americans from President Donald Trump, who Takei believes is acting out in fear.
“That fear comes from the fact that he’s uninformed,” Takei tells Et as hundreds of thousands of Americans have responded to the actor’s Care2 petition calling...

Whether he’s crooning Irving Berlin with Anna Kendrick, or subbing in for Jay-z with Alicia Keys on “Empire State of Mind”, the comedian’s dulcet tones are always a welcome and earnest addition to his jokes.

Now that's what we call passion. Neil Patrick Harris challenged James Corden to a Broadway riff-off on The Late Late Show Monday, mocking Corden for winning a Tony Award for a "non-singing role." Determined to defend his talent, Corden launched into "Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat" from Guys and Dolls. Nph fired back with a powerhouse rendition of Gypsy's "Everything's Coming Up Roses." Impressed, Corden challenged Harris again. "Broadway ain't nothing unless you can belt out a heartbreaking ballad." Challenged accepted. Harris chose to croon "Being Alive" from Company, to which Corden responded with "On My Own" from Les...

Now that’s dedication! Neil Patrick Harris visited The Late Late Show on Monday night where he engaged in an epic show tunes riff-off with host James Corden.
More: Why James Corden Won't Be Hosting the New 'Carpool Karaoke' Series
After Harris mocked Corden for winning a Tony for a non-singing role, the music-loving Brit decided to prove he has chops in the vocal competition.
Corden started off singing, “Sit Down You’re Rockin’ the Boat” from Guys and Dolls, to which Harris responded with the show-stopping “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” from Gypsy.
When it came time for ballads, Harris belted out “Being Alive” from Company while Corden tugged at the heartstrings singing “On My Own” from Les Miserables.
Eventually the pair came together to duet on “My Shot” from Hamilton, raps and all.
But it turns out that the stage battle was too much for Harris, who made a...

Always Shine (Sophia Takal)
With the excess of low-budget, retreat-in-the-woods dramas often finding characters hashing out their insecurities through a meta-narrative, a certain initial resistance can occur when presented with such a derivative scenario at virtually every film festival. While Sophia Takal‘s psychological drama Always Shine ultimately stumbles, the chemistry of its leads and a sense of foreboding dread in its formal execution ensures its heightened view of...

You don't have to be a fan of Broadway musicals to love every minute of Best Worst Thing That Ever Could Have Happened. This story of one of the most crushing flops to ever hit the Great White Way speaks to the ambition that drives all of us, even sometimes into a brick wall. They could do no wrong – that is until their new collaboration,...

Though he was just 25 years old when Phantasm hit theaters, many don't know that the cult 1979 horror film was actually director Don Coscarelli's third movie. It was an unusually auspicious Big Hollywood start to a career that ended up taking a less-mainstream turn as the years went on. "I've been working my way downward ever since,...
