- Mayhem Behind Movies is a fly on the wall mockumentary following Kevin Knight, a struggling low-budget filmmaker, on his mission to complete his first big-break movie Valentine before the opening premiere. Kevin soon finds himself in turmoil as he races against the clock in a make or break scenario packed with side-splitting and nail-biting moments. Will Kevin finish in enough time with all the odds stacked up against him?—Anonymous
- Mayhem Behind Movies depicts the hectic life of struggling filmmaker Kevin Knight, whose passion, ambition and life revolves around creating films. Hes accompanied by some unhelpful allies, his terribly pessimistic best friend Dwayne and gormless friend Richie whose interests unfortunately lie no further than boobs and food.
The camera crew follow Kevins car journey, fly on the wall style, to an exciting meeting with Talent Development Executive Ian Duncan at affluent film cooperation Funding for Films. We see that Ian, casually dressed, is more interested about his free large mocha latte in front of him than the promising young director.
We sense Kevins frustration, then complete shock, as Ian fires inappropriate and completely unrelated questions at a crest-fallen Kevin. Kevin finds himself unable to supply the right answers to Is it about global warming? To which he can only muster a no. Ian then asks: How many African Americans are in it? To which a peeved Kevin retorts None! This funny scene is reflective of the political correctness filmmakers now face ticking the right boxes in order to please. The camera crew also follows Kevin finishing the short horror film Apocalypse Undead. Entering the film into the ICA Film Festival Kevin misses the first place prize of £5,000 because of a corrupt board of judges. Kevin, left with second place, takes home a £100 pound food voucher another comical, if not slightly tragic, example of his struggles to break the industry.
Not deterred Kevin takes the advice of his writing agent Mary and completes a romantic screenplay called Valentine. Media organisation Micromex Entertainment instantly falls in love with the script and decides to fund the film on the basis that Kevin directs. We soon discover this dream opportunity comes with a catch. If Kevin fails to deliver the film on deadline he will not only be liable for damages but denied his rights to the script - his career and reputation would lie in tatters and he may never work again. Kevin accepts the challenge and hires Producer Derek who has an outstanding C.V. What Kevin doesnt know however is Derek lied his ass off, with his knowledge only stemming from a paperback copy of How to be a Music Producer.
The audition process starts. However Derek, the incompetent producer, does a runner to Las Vegas taking with him the entire filming fund. To add to this disaster the only copy of the screenplay has been accidently wiped off the computer. Kevin, panic-stricken and desperate, grabs the only script he has left at hand. A script written many years ago when he was twelve, set in space. Now, with a couple of weeks remaining, and maxing his cards out for money, he begins the frantic creation of his schoolboy film - shooting daily and editing nightly.
Calling upon relatives and friends for help Kevin drives forward with a production which goes from bad to worse. With the clashing of strong and vibrant characters, the tragic lack of resources and the tirade of other challenging and chaotic obstacles its a matter of keeping head above water for one determined protagonist who desperately wants to overcome self-doubt, avoid failure, and make his mark at the opening premiere where his fate will be decided. This is Mayhem Behind Movies.
