Featured review
The next game I gave some of my time too, as I prepare to get rid of my 360 collection, was "Ace Combat: Assault Horizon". This was my first experience with any game in the Ace Combat series and what I found was a visually impressive game but one whose missions were too long and repetitive to keep me coming back.
"Ace Combat: Assault Horizon" is a combat flight simulator in which the player controls fighter jets in close combat, assault helicopters from both mounted gun positions and the pilot's seat and operates as a weapons officer on a large gunship. There is a story to the game, but frankly I wasn't that interested in it. We successfully rescued a downed soldier and our Russian colleagues turned on us, but that was about as far as I got.
Like I say, it looks lovely, particularly in the modes other than dogfighting. In dogfighting generally things move too fast to be able to concentrate on the visuals, but everything was fine in that mode too. Control felt natural, though I spent a lot of time inverting axis and back again for different modes of gameplay. I liked that there was variety in the game and if it shook things up a little more frequently then I'd have been more into it - but each mission is a long one and often with relatively unforgiving checkpoints. I regularly found myself bored by each type of mission well before I'd reached its conclusion.
Most disappointingly, the dogfights - which are the core game mechanic from the series, were my least favourite. Endlessly spinning around and around whilst trying to get a lock on the targets is probably realistic, but I didn't find it fun and each of those levels seemed to go on for a long, long time.
I can't speak to the rest of the game, I had enough well before reaching Dubai, but it speaks to my enjoyment of it that I had no regrets about giving up.
