During the reign of King John district sheriffs were charged with, among the usual sheriff roles, collecting taxes, which were particularly high under King John. As sheriffs were paid based on their collections corruption was common. Two of the more disreputable sheriffs were Philip Marc and John of Oxford, both of Nottingham.
