Beginning on July 24, the Paris Olympics will measure athletic greatness in finite windows of time.
Noah Lyles will run 100 meters in comfortably under 10 seconds. It will take a bit longer — more than 15 minutes — for Katie Ledecky to swim 1,500 meters. French baller Victor Wembanyama will attempt to burnish his growing legend in 40-minute increments.
The NBCU family will, once again, trot out the usual assortment of retired jocks, veteran journalists and Snoop Dogg to offer the reminder that a sport isn’t just the game itself, but all of the storytelling that comes with it. Sports is entertainment, and in 2024, entertainment means television. This won’t surprise any small-screen obsessive; lately, “television” and “sports” have become frequently interchangeable terms.
The primary explanation for that is simple: In a world of delayed viewing, live events are the Holy Grail for everybody. It’s the reason that last year’s list of “most...

As the world’s largest streaming service and the most popular sport in the United States, Netflix and the NFL have seemed like natural allies for some time.
As the streaming giant noted on social media when it made the announcement, you can’t spell Netflix without NFL. The world’s largest streaming service is now an official game distributor for the top sports league in the United States after it was confirmed on Wednesday that Netflix would offer Christmas Day NFL games in each of the next three seasons, marking the largest investment by the streamer in live sports in its history. The deal is a massive step for Netflix and the NFL alike, considering the conservative approach to sports streaming taken by both companies thus far. That caution is one of the biggest reasons that it took so long for the two sides to team up, as both...

Advertisers who normally use the Super Bowl to create commercials that make your jaw drop instead were content if they could get just a little smile.
For the second consecutive year, Madison Avenue relied on a massive parade of celebrities to capture consumer attention, foregoing in many cases the social messages and dynamic creative concepts that have generated chatter in the past. Where the Super Bowl was once the setting for Apple’s still-talked-about “1984” commercial or Procter & Gamble’s clever insertion of Tide into a bevy of ads, it’s now become a place for formulaic cameos of famous faces.
“It’s like a celebrity arms race,” says Simon Bruyn, executive creative director at Mother, an independent agency. “It’s like one celebrity isn’t enough.”

The sci-fi horror A Quiet Place franchise is heading to New York with its latest entry, A Quiet Place: Day One, which is set to reach theatres on June 28th. A trailer for the film arrived online just a couple days ago, and now we know that this is also one of the movies that’s going to be promoted during the Super Bowl this Sunday. We know that because the “Big Game” TV spot has already made its way online, and you can check it out in the embed above!
While John Krasinski directed the previous two films, he is producing A Quiet Place: Day One and has passed the helming duties over to Michael Sarnoski, director of the Nicolas Cage drama Pig (watch it Here). Jeff Nichols (Midnight Special) was attached to write and direct A Quiet Place: Day One for a while, but when he dropped out he was replaced by Sarnoski.

The aftermath of the strikes may have rattled the domestic box office, which is 13% behind the same period a year ago. But that’s not stopping Paramount, Universal and Disney from spending a record $7 million per 30-second spot to show off their movie wares on Super Bowl Sunday.
Despite the box office taking a hit, most major studio (and streaming) execs really expect that it’s temporary; the best means for downstream monies and eventizing remains in theatrical. What better time to do it than before an audience of 100 million viewers when the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs butt heads this Sunday.

There's commitment to the bit, and then there are the lengths the "If" folks went to in order to keep a hilarious running joke going. We're currently less than a week away from the national holiday and highlight of the year for the most annoying Americans you know -- the Super Bowl -- but, on the bright side, that also means studios and marketing teams are pulling out all the stops to separate themselves from the field. Since the actual phrase "Super Bowl" is, in fact, copyrighted, audiences are instead left with a slew of "Big Game" teases and trailers that are all attempting to one-up the others. And that brings us to one of the more clever gags we've seen in quite a while, courtesy of the upcoming John Krasinski-directed "If."

If you subscribed to a channel package or streamer to get channels like NFL Network and NFL RedZone, it’s safe to leave those plans behind.
The darkest time of the year is about to begin for NFL fans. The weeks between the Super Bowl and the beginning of free agency toward the end of March is a bleak time when the reality of the offseason is setting in, and it’s coming up fast. The good news for those who signed up to get a pay-tv package with NFL channels is that at least they can now save some money by leaving that package behind until September.
YouTube TV and Sling TV offered football-specific packages in 2023, but subscribers can now cancel those subscriptions and save. NFL+ can now safely be left behind, particularly for fans on the Premium tier who signed up to stream NFL RedZone. Paramount+ is offering...

Deadline’s report states that the project was also packaged prior to the beginning of the strikes. Plot: When an ex-soldier who discovers gold in the Lapland wilderness tries to take the loot into the city, Nazi soldiers led by a brutal SS officer battle him.
Review: If you saw John Wick: Chapter 4 in the theater, chances are you saw the trailer for Sisu. The brutally bloody teaser showcased the same level of carnage we have expected from David Leitch films like Nobody and Bullet Train, but Sisu is very different. Harkening to the bloodlust one feels dispatching Nazis in games like Wolfenstein 3D or in zombie films like Dead Snow and Iron Sky; Sisu is chock full of World War II German monsters getting what they deserve in every conceivable way as well as some you likely never would have thought up in a million years. Lionsgate is betting that American audiences will appreciate Sisu much like they did Inglourious Basterds, and I can confirm that they absolutely will.

Indiana Jones and the “Big Game” spot? During Sunday’s Super Bowl, Disney released a new trailer for the forthcoming return of Indiana Jones, “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” which puts Harrison Ford back in the fedora.
The film is directed by James Mangold with a script he wrote alongside Jez and John-Henry Butterworth. Steven Spielberg, who directed the four previous installments in the franchise and was attached to direct “Dial of Destiny” before dropping out, is one of the executive producers.
The fifth overall installment in the franchise, “The Dial of Destiny” is set in in 1969, with “American archaeologist and adventurer Indiana Jones living against the backdrop of the Space Race. Jones is uneasy over the fact that the U.S. government has recruited former Nazis to help beat the Soviet Union in the competition to make it to space. His goddaughter, Helena, accompanies him on his journey.

Indiana Jones is back and so is John Williams’ iconic score in the fifth film of the franchise, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Lucasfilm dropped a new 30-second spot for the first new film of the series since 2008’s Kingdom of the Crystal Skull during Super Bowl Lvii.
Harrison Ford, currently seen battling sheepherders and fighting to protect the Yellowstone Ranch on 1923, puts on Indy’s iconic hat and picks up his lasso once more. He’s joined by Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag), Antonio Banderas (Pain and Glory), John Rhys-Davies (Raiders of the Lost Ark), Shaunette Renee Wilson (Black Panther), and Thomas Kretschmann (Das Boot).
Additional stars include Toby Jones (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom), Boyd Holbrook (Logan), Oliver Richters (Black Widow), Ethann Isidore (Mortel), and Mads Mikkelsen (Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore).
Ford v Ferrari‘s James Mangold directs, with Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall, and Simon Emanuel producing.

“My memory’s a little fuzzy. Are you still a Nazi?” Lucasfilm has just dropped a jaw-dropping, 30-second “Big Game” Super Bowl TV spot for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny that’s packed to the brim with more classic Indy action. In the tv spot, you get another quick look at the younger, de-aged Indiana Jones planting a classic Harrison Ford haymaker right in the face of a Nazi goon before segueing to an older Indy facing off with an old enemy, Mads Mikkelsen’s Voller.
While the new Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny TV spot is not as revealing as the first trailer, this new spot gives us a quick look at the movie’s scope and a big action scene set on a crashing plane. In this bit, Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Helena attempts to rescue Indy, only to need some rescuing herself. While the...

65 million years ago, Big Game meant something very different. 65 hours before kickoff, Sony has released the Super Bowl spot for 65, which is coming to theaters on March 10.
Sam Raimi joined forces with A Quiet Place writers Scott Beck and Bryan Woods for 65, who directed the high concept genre film from their own original screenplay.
The original movie from Columbia Pictures stars Adam Driver, Ariana Greenblatt, and Chloe Coleman, and we had no idea what the movie was about until the first trailer hit. Turns out, it’s a survival horror experience set on Earth in the distant past, inhabited by dinosaurs. Adam Driver is tasked with blasting them away with futuristic video game weapons.

General Motors and Netflix want to use the Super Bowl to drive consumers to a new destination.
The automotive giant and the streaming titan have teamed up for a funny Super Bowl commercial with comic actor Will Ferrell that aims to boost a new marketing agreement the two have struck that puts new Gm electric vehicles — and potentially those of other manufacturers — in popular Netflix series like “Love Is Blind,” “Queer Eye” and “Unstable.” Two teaser for the ad were released Thursday.
“The more we see electric vehicles show up in this type of binge-worthy content, the faster everyone gets used to them,” says Deborah Wahl, General Motors’ chief marketing officer, in a presentation Wednesday. Gm has made a noticeable corporate commitment to the new vehicles, citing the demands a worsening global climate will place on the automobile industry. Another Prime placement is on the way. The beverage brand, co-founded last year by influencers Ksi and Logan Paul, will become the “official sports drink” of the UFC.
According to Sports Business Journal, Prime and UFC have signed a three-year deal. The agreement will give Prime a presence within the UFC Performance Institute training center, and the brand’s logo will appear on stools and in corners at upcoming UFC events. The in-Octogon Prime branding will first appear at UFC 284, which will begin on February 11.
During the second weekend of February, Prime will make its strongest marketing push to date. In addition to its placement at UFC 284, the brand will also appear in a Super Bowl commercial. That spot will be the first Big Game ad to promote a company led by online video creators.

Horror fans rejoice, for once more this March’s Glasgow Film Festival welcomes another weekend of wickedly fun international depravity, courtesy of the that all-too-reliable Ff banner. 13 films, over 3 days, with one positively freakish re-imagining of Winnie the Pooh as a serial killer; there’s never a dull year as far as FrightFest is concerned.
With this year’s line-up gathered together from all over the globe, spanning nine different countries including France, Spain, Austria, Finland, the Netherlands and Lithuania, as well as the usual British and American fare, there’s certainly a wide variety on offer too.
The one horror hounds will no doubt already be humming about is the cult-flavoured Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey, a deliciously nasty slasher that pits everyone’s favourite cuddly characters from the Hundred Acre Wood against each other, in bloody fashion. With Pooh and friends now in the copyright-friendly public domain, expect director...

With its wide-screen sky and endlessly empty tundra, Lapland makes a surprisingly able analogue for the American West. Finnish director Jalmari Helander is not exactly interested in making Once Upon in Time in Lapland here, but he certainly enjoys the genre’s visual language, huge-canvas landscapes, and weather-beaten faces. After his deadpan Christmas creature feature, Rare Exports, and his pop-rocks riff on The Most Dangerous Game, Big Game, where Samuel L. Jackson as a shoeless president of the United States being hunted in the Finnish wilderness, he returns with a bigger budget but a narrower ambition. Sisu is a straight-as-an-arrow romp which is really an excuse to shoot, slice, and dice Nazis in a colourfully outrageous fashion. His regular leading man, Jorma Tommila, also...

It's been a while since we've seen a Jalmari Helander movie, with his most recent film "Big Game" premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival back in 2014. Considering how both "Rare Exports" and "Big Game" are considered cult favorites among genre fans, this absence might feel a bit strange.
Thankfully, he's returned to fill that void after an eight-year hiatus. "Sisu," also known by its English title "Immortal," is schlock in the purest sense, making for a great addition to this year's TIFF under the Midnight Madness block. Set towards the tail-end of World War II, it centers around the solitary gold miner Aatami (Jorma Tommila), whose good fortune is interrupted by an army of Nazis enacting a scorched earth protocol throughout Finland. Of course, these Nazis realize too late that the old man they are dealing with is a legendary soldier with a reputation for killing anyone who gets in his way.

Nazis die and Finns triumph in the Finnish WW2 thriller “Sisu,” a spaghetti Western–style action-adventure set in the Lapland plains of Finland. In this polished genre exercise, a stubborn Finnish gold prospector runs away from, and also violently dispatches, a group of Nazis during the war’s concluding months.
Writer-director Jalmari Helander doesn’t really develop his post-post-modern pastiche beyond its basic high-concept premise, so “Sisu” — premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival — never becomes more than an energetically realized live-action cartoon. Thankfully, Helander and his collaborators deliver a good-enough potboiler, thanks especially to the invigorating contributions of cinematographer Kjell Lagerroos and editor Juho Virolainen.
There’s not much more to “Sisu”, but it certainly looks good and moves briskly from one action scene to the next.
That said, you might be disappointed by “Sisu” if you expect it to develop, either in terms of narrative momentum or dramatic tension.

Huge congratulations to Kansas ’— uh, we mean, Missouri’s — Kansas City Chiefs! But despite taking home their first Super Bowl trophy in a half century, the real winner was us, the viewers, because we all know that the best thing about the Big Game is always the commercials (and that halftime show). Fortunately this year’s group of ads were rife with instant classic spots heavy on equal parts humor, star power (Bill Murray! Martin Scorsese!), and general razzle-dazzle. Having said that, there were some fumbles, too (we’re looking at you,...

It's been eight months since Game of Thrones ended. So, many fans were excited to see Maisie Williams reappear on their TV screens during a 2020 Super Bowl commercial. Instead of issuing a warning that winter is coming, the Arya Stark star sang about how the cold never bothered her anyway. That's right! The 22-year-old actress sang the Frozen favorite "Let It Go" for Audi's Big Game ad. The one-minute spot showed the celebrity sitting in her car and observing the pollution and waste on a hot day. But instead of letting the stress get to her, she let go of the past and drove off to a "more sustainable future" in her electric Audi e-tron Sportback. According to Abbey...

The WandaVision trailer may show us the children of Vision and Scarlet Witch, and this could have grave consequences for the McU.
Marvel’s Disney+ commercial from the Super Bowl is a loaded few seconds. The stuff shown from Falcon and the Winter Soldier is relatively the most straightforward. The brief stinger for Loki asks a lot of questions. But the true highlight of the ad is WandaVision, starring Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany. Even though it shows just as much footage as Falcon and the Winter Soldier, there’s far more head-scratchery in what we see and, more than the other two shows, it has potential for the biggest fallout for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Of course, if you haven't seen it already, watch the trailer.

It looks like WandaVision will take Vision and Scarlet Witch from 1950s domestic bliss to Brady Bunch and Roseanne style sitcom homages.
Just under a year out from the release date of Disney+’s Marvel series WandaVision, we still don’t have a full idea of what the gosh darn thing is about.
We know that the show will continue the adventures of Avengers Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) a.k.a. Scarlet Witch and The Vision (Paul Bettany). We also know, thanks to some stylish promo photos that show the couple in ‘50s style domestic bliss, that it will likely borrow liberally from Tom King’s speculative comic series Vision. The speculative fiction nature of the series would make some sense given the fact that The Vision is dead in the Avenger films continuity.
Now a new Marvel teaser released by Disney+ during this year’s Super Bowl offers up even more clues.

Today is a holiday in several different ways. For starters, it's Super Bowl Sunday, which means football fans and even the most casual sports enthusiasts have a reason to gather up with some cold ones to dine on unhealthy snacks as they watch the Big Game, all of those commercials, and, of course,

GÖTEBORG, Sweden — Munich-based Global Screen has acquired international distribution rights to Finnish procedural series “Fast,” set up at “Nurses”’ producer Yellow Film & TV, marking the first collaboration between Telepool’s sales division and the Finnish powerhouse.
A 10-part series, “Fast” centers on a special task force within the police department that tracks down fugitives. The C More Original is based on an idea from exec producer Olli Haikka. Tatiana Elf, winner of Finland’s local 2019 Emmy -the Golden Venla- for “King Liar” (“Keisari Aarnio”) is creator/writer. Some of Finland’s hottest helmers have boarded the series: Jalmari Helander, known for his breakthrough genre film “Big Game” starring Samuel L. Jackson; Hamy Ramezan, whose anticipated debut feature “Any Day Now” was a buzzy work in progress at this week’s Göteborg’s Nordic Film Market; and established director Saara Cantell (“Devil’s Bride”).
