With “Inside Out 2” dominating the past few weekends, it’s time for another franchise movie to have a chance to swoop in and take #1 … or maybe not. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.

Things have generally picked up this month at the box office, and Paramount Pictures’ “A Quiet Place: Day One” will try to keep things rolling with the new installment in a franchise that has grossed $631.5 million over the course of two movies, with one of them released at the height of Covid. Directed by John Krasinski, the first movie opened in 2018 with $50.2 million, leading to a sequel that was delayed a full year due to the pandemic but still did relatively well.

The prequel is co-written and directed by Michael Sarnoski, who made his debut with the 2021 Nicolas Cage thriller “Pig.” It stars Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o as a woman dying from cancer...

On Thursday at CinemaCon, Lionsgate said that it is opening the Erwin Brothers-directed American Underdog on Christmas Day. The pic was previously set to open on December 10, with the release timed to the climax of the NFL season.

“This movie perfectly aligns with the emotions of the holiday season: The power of faith. A drive to bring out the best in all of us. The strength of family. And of course, the height of the NFL championship season. When you take all of that together, the perfect release date for this movie is Christmas day, and that’s where we have decided to date it,” said Joe Drake, chairman of Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group.

American Underdog tells the inspirational true story of Kurt Warner (Zachary Levi), who went from a stock boy at a grocery store to a two-time NFL Mvp, Super Bowl champion and Hall of Fame quarterback.

In today’s TV news roundup, Amazon Prime Video released the premiere date and trailer for “Frank of Ireland,” and TV One released a clip from the upcoming season of “Unsung.”

HBO Max has announced the cast for the upcoming comedy pilot “The Gordita Chronicles” from Sony Pictures Television. The family comedy is about a willful, 12-year-old Dominican girl Cucu (Olivia Goncalves) who struggles to fit into hedonistic 1980s Miami as her family pursues the American dream. The cast will also include: Diana Maria Riva as as “Adela,” Cucu’s mom; Juan Javier Cardenas as “Victor Castelli,” Cucu’s dad; Savannah Nicole Ruiz as “Emilia,” Cucu’s older sister; Noah Rico (“High School Musical: The Musical”) as “Yosmel ‘Yoshy’ Hernandez,” a Cuban refugee and Cucu’s first friend in Miami.

The Gordita Chronicles centers on Carlota “Cucu” Castelli (Goncalves), a willful 12-year-old Dominican immigrant with a heart of gold. Cucu leaves her home and her parochial school in Santo Domingo to live in Miami and pursue the American Dream during the hedonistic 1980s after her father, a marketing executive with a large airline, gets transferred there. Cucu meets head-on the challenges of being an immigrant in a strange new world with humor, bravado and some really bad choices.

Jennifer Lopez is set to star in and produce an action film at Netflix called “The Mother.” Niki Caro, who recently directed the live-action “Mulan,” is in talks to direct the feature.

Misha Green, the showrunner behind “Lovecraft Country,” wrote the original screenplay that will star Lopez as an assassin who comes out of hiding to protect her daughter she gave up years earlier. Andrea Berloff (“Straight Outta Compton”) made revisions to the script.

Lopez will produce “The Mother” alongside Elaine Goldsmith Thomas for Nuyorican Productions, Benny Medina and Roy Lee and Miri Yoon for Vertigo Entertainment. Green will also produce. Catherine Hagedorn is the executive producer and Courtney Baxter is the associate producer.

Lopez is also attached to star in another Netflix thriller called “The Cipher,” and she’s currently filming the Lionsgate comedy “Shotgun Wedding.” She’ll next be seen in the romantic comedy “Marry Me” alongside Owen Wilson and Maluma.

Bettina Gilois, an award-winning screenwriter and author, has died in her sleep at age 58, according to a friend. She had an advanced form of cancer and passed just days before her July 9 birthday.

Gilois was having what was described by a friend as “a career year” when she passed, with several projects in development at various networks.

Gilois first began working as an assistant to Slava Tsukerman, the director of Liquid Sky, in her native Berlin. She also worked at Andy Warhol’s Factory in New York on the television series Andy Warhol’s Fifteen Minutes.

She subsequently joined Keith Barish and Arnold Kopelson Productions as a development executive, which led to producing credits on Fire Birds, as well as Triple Bogie on a Par Five Hole with Amos Poe.

Disney has shared a first look at 'Mulan,' the live-action adaptation of its 1998 animated film.

The picture shows Yifei Liu, star of 'The Forbidden Kingdom' and 'Once Upon a Time,' who was cast as Hua Mulan following a yearlong global casting search.

As with the 1998 animated feature, the adventure centers on a fearless young woman in ancient China who masquerades as a man to fight attacking invaders.

The film will shoot on locations in New Zealand and China and will open in U.S. theaters on March 27, 2020.

The cast also includes Donnie Yen, Jason Scott Lee, and Yoson An, who is currently in theaters with 'The Meg.'

'Mulan' is being directed by Niki Caro ('Whale Rider,' 'McFarland USA') from a screenplay by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver ('Jurassic World'), and Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek.

Get used to hearing Niki Caro’s name. As the only female director to have not just one, but two studio pictures hitting the big screen over the next two years, including Disney’s much-hyped live-action remake of “Mulan,” the filmmaker is about to be catapulted to a rarefied position in an industry that is not always friendly to placing women behind the camera. That doesn’t mean she’s entirely happy about it.

“That just depresses me,” Caro told IndieWire when asked about her unique upcoming slate. “It’s wonderful for me, but God, I have survivor guilt over this. The fact that I’m working is great and I feel very fortunate, but the fact that so many highly skilled, gifted women are not, it’s shameful.”

But Caro has a plan to combat Hollywood’s gender imbalance behind the camera, and it’s one she’s already putting into action.

It looks like Disney has found the director for their live-action remake of the classic animated film Mulan. The studio is currently in talks with Whale Rider director Niki Caro to take on the challenge of bringing this story to life. 

Caro is a very talented director who has also helmed films such as Charlize Theron's North Country and Kevin Costner's McFarland, USA. I've enjoyed all of the films she's made, and I think she's a solid choice to direct Mulan. She most recently helmed the upcoming Jessica Chastain film The Zookeeper's Wife. 

The current script for Mulan is was written by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, who previously worked on Jurassic World and Avatar. Disney really wants to get moving on this film project, and it's on the fast track to production.

The saga of the dueling live-action Mulan movies has taken another step forward, with Variety reporting that Disney’s version of the classic Chinese tale has tapped Niki Caro to direct. Caro—who’s also apparently on the list of directors the company’s eyeing for its upcoming Captain Marvel movie—is best known for her 2002 coming-of-age story Whale Rider.

Taking on a job that was initially offered to Ang Lee, Caro will be facing off against Sony’s version of the story of legendary, secretly female Chinese soldier Hua Mulan. That film is being directed by Game Of Thrones’ Alex Graves, and will allegedly be much more of a war movie; it’ll be interesting to see how Graves’ bloody style contrasts with Caro’s, whose other recent projects include North Country and McFarland, USA. Disney’s Mulan is expected to hit theaters on November 2, 2018.

The Disney train keeps on chugging along, and nowadays, it seems like they can do little wrong. They seem to have a monopoly on big budget, family friendly fare. They have their animated films, Pixar’s animated films, Star Wars, and of course, Marvel Studios, and between all those, they’ll likely be largely responsible for the nostalgia of those growing up in today’s filmosphere.

The crowd-pleasing “Hidden Figures” might be based on a true story in an unknown chapter of American history, but not every detail was drawn from real life. The film follows a trio of Nasa mathematicians and engineers during the early sixties “Space Race” era, including Taraji P. Henson as Katherine Johnson, Octavia Spencer as Dorothy Vaughn and Janelle Monae as Mary Jackson, but it also required the invention of at least one crucial character.

In what’s shaping up to be an eccentric yet formidable cast, Kevin Costner is reportedly in talks to join the cast of Aaron Sorkin’s directorial debut, “Molly’s Game.”

The film is already set to star Jessica Chastain as the titular Molly Bloom, an Olympic would-be who finds her way into a high-stakes, underground poker game, eventually becoming the target of an FBI investigation.

Marvel Studios is closing in on hiring a director to helm Brie Larson in Captain Marvel. According to THR, the studio has narrowed it down to three directors, who are Niki Caro, Lesli Linka Glatter, and Lorene Scafaria.

Niki Caro has been mentioned as a possibility before. She is the director of the wonderfully made 2002 film Whale Rider. Since TV series kind of have their own style, it’s hard to tell what she could bring to the table for Captain Marvel.

A few weeks back, it was confirmed that Oscar-winning actress Brie Larson was cast as Carol Danvers, a.k.a. Captain Marvel in the upcoming Marvel film...Captain Marvel. The film is still a solid three years away, so the studio has plenty of time between now and then, but the character is likely to show up in 2018's Avengers: Infinity War, a good year or so before her own standalone film.

As such, it makes sense that Marvel Studios would be hard at work looking for someone to helm Captain Marvel. Given that Black Panther director Ryan Coogler had a hand in the introduction of the character in Captain America: Civil War so that the character would have consistency between films, it's a no-brainer that Marvel would want to do the same thing with Captain Marvel.

So who's up to direct Marvel's first female-led solo film?...

The project has been in one stage of development or another dating back to 2009, when Taylor Lautner of “Twilight” fame was attached to star. He left the project the following year for a “Stretch Armstrong” movie that has yet to materialize, and “Max Steel” now stars Ben Winchell ias Max McGrath — a teenager who literally joins forces with an alien named Steel to create the superheroic entity of the title. Andy García and Maria Bello co-star.

A couple days ago it was revealed that Brie Larson is in talks to play Captain Marvel, and a lot of fans seem to think she is a solid choice. I think she’d be great in the role! Now, thanks to Boss Logic, we have an idea of what the actress could look like as the character. I doubt Marvel will go with a costume like this, but it’s still pretty fun to see what one of many possibilities could be.

I’m excited for Captain Marvel, especially with someone like Larson involved. The studio is also in talks with a couple of talented directors to take on the project. Those directors are Jennifer Kent (The Babadook) and Niki Caro (Whale Rider, McFarland, USA)

Captain Marvel is set to be released on July 6th, 2018.

Aside from The Inhumans, it was the Marvel project that looked to have slipped toward development limbo after languishing on the brink of production for years, but Captain Marvel has exploded into life. And not a moment to soon.

Just yesterday, we brought you the news that Room breakout and Kong: Skull Island star Brie Larson was in early talks to clinch the title role of Carol Danvers and now, in the same report by THR, it’s been revealed that Niki Caro (Whale Rider, McFarland, USA) and The Babadook‘s Jennifer Kent line the current shortlist of directors.

There's been plenty of chatter lately about Marvel's first superhero film with a woman in the lead role, Captain Marvel. The latest was last night's report that Brie Larson was circling the titular role, and this comes after weeks of rumors regarding who was pacing around the director's chair for the 2019 film.

The Hollywood Reporter claims to have two more directors being considered, while Larson makes her decision about taking on the role of Carol Danvers. A few weeks ago, I wrote about the rumored candidate Emily Carmichael. A week later, Elizabeth Wood emerged as another leading candidate. Now THR says that Niki Caro and Jennifer Kent are in the running as well.

The synopsis for the midseason finale of Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. hinted that Daisy (Chloe Bennet) would be finalizing her team of Secret Warriors to go up against the forces of Hydra, and that would seem to be confirmed with the addition of Mexican actress Natalia Cordova-Buckley (Windows to the Sea, McFarland, USA) to the cast.

According to Point Of Geeks, Buckley will play Yo Yo Rodriguez, Aka Slingshot. This Marvel Comics character is a speedster like The Flash and X-Men‘s Quicksilver, but unlike them, her power eventually slingshots (hence the name) her back to the point she started running from.

According to Point of Geeks, Natalia Cordova-Buckley (McFarland, USA) has joined the cast of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as Yo Yo Rodriguez, a character you'll know better as Secret Warriors member Slingshot. It hasn't been revealed when exactly she'll show up in the series, but the site adds that the actress is set to begin work on the series in January, so we won't be seeing her until the show returns in March. For those of you unfamiliar with Slingshot, she's a speedster similar to The Flash and Quicksilver. However, the difference here is that she ends up always returning to the spot where she activated her powers, hence the name! Analysis: The question on a lot of people’s minds going into Spectre will no doubt be “is it going to be as good as or better than Skyfall?” Skyfall was certainly an awesome Bond movie, but if there is one thing we can take away from oh say Quantum of Solace, it’s that we should take each Bond movie as a single experience and try not to compare them with each other. That’s what I do anyway and it really takes away from the expectations and makes for a more enjoyable time.
