For fans of fantasy and sci-fi, this show has potential and I guess we need to see where it goes. Hopefully it will start to take itself more seriously, cast members will actually speak instead of whisper, and each episode won't end with a group of screaming girls (or witches) panicking about the situation they find themselves in, cause that's already gotten old. It's the classic tale of good verses evil, although acting on the evil side is disappointing, always dressed in black and trying way to hard to appear evil. I guess we will need to wait and see although I am not holding my breath. But if the next episode ends with a bunch of screaming girls falling all over themselves screaming and panicking i am switching off.

Even if it were a soap opera or telenovela, the over-acted melodrama is cloyingly interfering. At times the dialog and interactions put it on par with YA-bordering on juvenile-programming.
It's like a repackaged new age children's series trying to wear mommy's makeup and adding in some PG/R rated themes and hallucinogens in attempt to hook some adult attention.
It might be summarized as an ALLBLACK wannabe version of Charmed, but even less "believable".
If it hadn't been for the uniqueness for the target audience and niche network, I sincerely doubt it could have survived long enough to air the first season without being kicked to the curb. Even the attempts at new age fantasy schlock fall short.

It's cool for the most part. The acting is decent and sometimes over kill as usual. Started off stupid, but it got better. I get it, a bunch of women coming into their powers and trying their best to overcome obstacles and find answers. A newcomer that doesn't know she's a witch (nothing new at all) An eager to jumpstart her powers witch that is childlike and annoying at times. A grounded one. A sexual one. A mature one. Yay you have your coven. A mentor that basically shuns the newcomer until b.s. Starts to happen now the explanation starts when all of this could've been avoided instead of hiding the truth. I despise lazy writing. Anyway I gave it a 5 just because. It's not bad, but like I said...i despise lazy writing.

Its giving Sunset Beach BTEC. The production and quality is awful. The concept is great and could have displayed the history and power of Hoodoo and Voodoo showing its art and magical effects but if anything, goes against every fact about African magick and turns it into a show that does it no justice. This is a waste of production. This is like another really bad Tyler Perry production that shouldn't even of had made it to the screen. The special effects were awful, the acting below mediocre and overall just very unnecessary. I hope in future black directors and producers do their research about their concept before going ahead and making the script.

I honestly see where story wants to go, but unfortunately the actresses aren't able to pull thru and give the story what it needs. Its like watching a bunch of people act like they are acting instead of being that character and a part of the story. Embarrassing.
I also wish certain characters weren't over the type tv tropes. I do like the idea of black women and witches but it has been done better in AHS and Vampire Diaries. Maybe those involved should have watched those shows to learn how to act and pull thru a better performance. No reason to work so hard just for us to watch you working hard at acting.

I actually went out of my way to write this review because someone needs to hear it. I have seen better acting and script writing from CHILDREN. I don't know where it went wrong, acting, writing, or both, but it should be illegal to take a plot and premise that good, and turn it into utter garbage. It's unwatchable to anyone who enjoys TV, and stains Black Television. They need to do better. From the production to the acting to the script, nothing about this show works. The acting is overdramatized and corny, and the script does nothing at all to make it any better. I usually don't write reviews on anything, but this TV show is so bad, it stains the reputation of black creatives. If i could give it 0 stars I would.
First I want to start by saying I waited until I saw a few episodes before I wrote a review. It seems like there's a lot of criticism from people who haven't given the show a chance. Which tells me they never went into it with an open mind. This is something I've never seen before, black female witches on a television streaming service, not Youtube, not some random website but an actual TV service. That's big on its own. The story is well written and the main actors are amazing. A few of the side characters are a little green but not bad, and yes some of the special effects aren't the best. HOWEVER! This is not a MARVEL TV show, you can't expect them to have that kind of budget from a network that's taking a big chance on something that's never been done. If the show is successful they'll probably get more money and that kind of stuff will improve. (Just like the first season of Shadow Hunters, those effects were sad but it was much better as the series went on.)
People should be paying attention to the writing and the acting. There are some great characters and I love the bonding between the women on this show. At its heart, it's a show about black women with some supernatural aspects. Which I love! I'm excited to see where the story takes the characters and how the villains come into play. I really hope it gets a season 2. People should actually watch the show through and not be so quick to judge based on a few minutes or the trailer and come with an open mind not looking for negatives. And remember that people can only do what they can do with the budget they have. If we don't support these kinds of shows you'll never see anything like this again!

I love all these beautiful and powerful black women witches! The storyline is a bit full and somewhat rushed and underdeveloped but I'm excited to see how it progresses. It has a "Charmesque" quality with the elders and the powerful coven. Their dress code is primarily black on black and they all rock it well. I had been looking for a show about witches and magic that is reflective of me as a black woman and I think I've found it.
Jordan is the exception; she's extremely annoying. I have to hit mute almost every time she opens her mouth. If you took a shot for each of her bouts of hysteria, you'd definitely be drunk.

The only reason I wouldn't give it a higher rating is due to the clear or quality audio and video! I think the storyline is great! I love Vanessa Bell Calloway and will always give something she is in a chance! I am glad I did! I hope they keep going with this one! It's nice to see women of color in this genre. I also believe that if it stays the filmography will improve. I appreciate that is is not the same as the charmed reboot which I also like but I LOOOOOVE THIS! Don't leave us hanging with only 5 episodes. If you plan on taking it away after just one season at least finish the season! I love Sharice! She's giving "Remy Ma" if she was a witch Vibez!

Love the show besides Jordan's character. I had to fast forward through alot of her parts because her character is soooo annoying I couldn't take it. How did they even get through filming this & not see that no one wants to constantly see & hear how she acts? It's not entertaining. If the storyline wasn't so good I would have completely stopped watching it because of that one character. It's that bad.

The show really has a strong premise. While the production and some of the acting may be an issue for some, I think the story more than makes up for that. The characters have their own personalities and I'm liking the magic system so far. I think the naysayers should give the show an opportunity to prove itself and grow before they write it off. We're only two episodes in at this point. I'm excited for more and think that if you like supernatural themed shows, this would tickle your fancy. Once the budget comes up, I think they'll really find their footing. I can't wait to see the characters be fleshed out and the storylines fully bloom.
The premise is interesting, the special effects are alright, it's got magic, sex, all the good stuff. What it doesn't have is someone pushing the actors to be better. Some of it is pretty bad. Like all the scenes were shot in one take without pulling the best perfomance possible out of the actors, which leaves things feeling a little cheap. Some of the actors are good, but that makes the poorly acted scenes stand out all the more. Now, to be fair I'm only on episode 4, and I'll keep watching just to see if they find their stride, but it's really like each episode is the pilot so far, and they are all still trying to find their chemistry.

This show has so much potential, I really think it deserves a chance! The actresses aren't completely on point however the storyline is intriguing and I am looking forward to seeing where they take it. I do wish that the episodes were longer so they could give more background. It tends to feel a little rushed and like we are missing important parts of the story. I've had to go back and rewatch multiple times only to realize I hadn't missed anything they just didn't explain when they should of. Even given those issues it's still got me coming back every Thursday to watch it. I hope they take the time to correct these issues.
It has a decent story but takes too long to get the story started. It reminds me of a black version of Charmed but more over the top with lesser CGI. The CGI is horrible but if you can get past that the acting is not bad just a bit over the top. The characters are interesting and has decent chemistry which kept my interest. The targeted audience is probably the reason for some of the over the top acting and writing. Some scenes are a bit stupid but it gets better, I feel like more polish is needed. Maybe bringing in producers with more visual experience on magical or occult tv shows/movies would help . I only stayed with it becuz I got interested halfway thru the series. It's only 6 episodes so you can binge in a day. Starting the 2nd season to see if my rating will change to better or worse.

This is a great show about urban witches with different abilities a going through daily struggles each learning, making mistakes and growing from them just like everybody else in the world. I love the fact the creators finally putting a show worth watching every min and the fact we are seeing something fresh and new like a Black Witch coven is AMAZING. Finally a Change and a good change!!! I definitely enjoyed every minute as I am of the blood myself who have seen just about every witch show there is and this show is by far my top 3 faves the only thing I recommend is limiting the sexual scene and extreme vulgar language because I would love my children to be able to Watch as well :)

The production quality reminds me of the WB and SyFy channel; we're not talking high quality special effects with this show, or high caliber acting. This isn't to say that either channels haven't produced some great quality productions (Buffy, Firefly, and Stargate SG-1) but, the WB and SyFy definitely have a vibe and to me, Wicked City could be slotted right in without much notice. It's the first season of the show and the chance to find it's footing and work out the kins is well deserved. The concept is fun and another show about magic, mayhem, and personal growth is always welcome.
All in all, it's not Oscar-worthy but still fun. Without the expectation of high art this show can be enjoyed as a b-level show focused on a group of women in Atlanta honing their skills and stepping into their identities as individuals with agency as well as power, and more than what society typically allows women thanks to magic.
The idea of an all Black coven is kinda cool and doesn't often get representation. Black witches have appeared in other shows for sure but, it's interesting to have a shift in perspective and have the full focus on Black women engaging in witchcraft, and styles that aren't historically Black and/or closed practices. The magic is eclectic and more respectful than other shows of been towards cultures and groups. It isn't perfect in this regard but, it's TV.
Giving it an 8/10 because there's room for improvement but plenty of shows weren't perfect right out of the gate. The concept gets high marks and it'll be interesting to see where the show is going. Would also like to see this show on a more mainstream platform versus one so niche. Not only do I not want to deal with another subscription but, non-Black folk would likely be interested in this show, too and it can come off as a bit exclusive where it's currently streaming.
Looking forward to a second season of Wicked City.

I'm entertained! In later seasons, hopefully they explore more African magic practices and really authenticate the tone. Like another review said, it sort of feels like "actors trying to act". In example: Casting a black actor/actress for a role that's been predominantly portrayed by white actors and the actor tries to add their essence to a character that was written for someone white. It kind of feels like the tone of this show, only because of the type/tone of magic that's being depicted. I'm in love with the idea! I won't be petty over production quality or graphics because I understand the business side. But also like someone else said, I would love to see the story go really deep and give the characters more of an authentic definition. But outside of my honest opinion, I really am entertained and will continue to watch because it's the only series featuring an all black cast of witches (to my knowledge) and I'm supporting. Witchcraft is something typically frowned upon in the black community. So, the series is definitely ground-breaking regardless. And that's all that really matters.

With our support this show has the potential to up their budget. I love that this is for us by us and something totally different from the expectations of the type of movies or tv shows that we are normally featured in. The characters are beautiful and they aren't overly made up meaning they are relatable. This isn't your typical witch show and it's not a knock off of charmed what we are use to watching so don't have that expectation. Have an open mind and give the story line an opportunity to be revealed. I'm speaking into existence that there will be another season and more stories coming out.

Refreshing, representative, revolutionary!
First of all, every single cast member is absolutely beautiful. They play their characters well-sometimes too well- and adds dynamic to their role. I love how dramatic the story line is and it truly capture my attention. It kind of reminds me of a show on ABC or lifetime but with more representation. I also appreciate how the writers include tarot as a super power for Jordan. Tarot is sometimes overlooked as a skill in the occult and as Jordan learns to love her power it shows the viewers the importance of it and how useful it can be. I'm excited to see how this show grows! :)
