Last year, Sundance was the first in-person version of the festival since the pandemic forced the bastion of American independent filmmaking online for two years. It also acted as the unofficial debut for 2Am, the upstart production and management outfit headed by Christine D’Souza Gelb, producer David Hinojosa and manager Kevin Rowe.
At the festival, 2Am premiered productions that included Celine Song’s Past Lives and competition title The Starling Girl, while clients screened feature debuts like A.V. Rockwell’s A Thousand and One, which went on to win the fest’s top prize. “It was our first real Sundance back, and our client of this tiny company, this little thing we’ve been building in the pandemic, wins the grand jury prize,” D’Souza Gelb remembers of the moment.

The stats are impressive enough: In just three-and-a-half years of existence, Pinky Promise Films have produced a dozen films, grown to six total employees, and debuted one heck of a cute website.
But for founder and CEO Jessamine (Aka “Jesse”) Burgum and president Kara Durrett, there’s another, slightly less quantifiable measurement they really like to see grow: people are calling them to produce their projects.
“We’re just entering into this wonderful era right now with Pinky Promise where people now know about us,” Durrett said during a recent interview with IndieWire. “People would not call us first, I would say, for a little while, because they just didn’t know who we were. We are now entering this magical place where we’re getting cold emails from filmmakers that we are obsessed with being like, ‘Hey, I just was at a dinner and everyone just kept talking about you guys.

The 2024 winners of the Spirit Awards were announced Saturday evening, in their usual spot in Santa Monica near the beach - this time just a week before the Oscars. The big winner this year is the beloved Past Lives, taking both Best Film and Best Director (Celine Song also won a DGA Award for Best First Feature). As usual, there are a few surprises: I've never heard of Chronicles of a Wandering Saint...

Another big award show took place this weekend (in addition to the SAG Awards), the Film Independent Spirit Awards, which celebrates indie film and TV. One thing about this awards show is that their idea of independent sometimes makes me scratch my head a bit, with HBO’s big-budget The Last of Us nominated a whole bunch in the TV category, along with Netflix’s Beef and several other streaming shows, which I’m not sure one could call independent. For films, there’s a $30 million budget cap. For TV, I’m honestly not sure what the benchmark is because Last of Us was notoriously an expensive show to shoot, costing at least $100 million.
Indeed, The Last of Us won some key awards on the TV side, winning Best Supporting Performance (for Nick Offerman) and Best Breakthrough Performance (for Keivonn Montreal Woodard). Over on the film side, American Fiction and...

Not many directors would choose an apocalyptic sci-fi romance spanning several filmmaking disciplines for their feature debut, but Sam and Andy Zuchero wouldn’t have it any other way when it comes to “Love Me.” The film, which will have its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival this week, stars Oscar-nominated duo Kristen Stewart and Steven Yeun as a buoy and a satellite falling in love a billion years after humans have gone extinct.
Speaking exclusively to Variety, the married filmmaking team say they first thought of the idea for “Love Me” back in 2019, and shortly after the global pandemic had them ruminating on themes of isolation and human connection.
“We thought that the idea of a buoy and a satellite, the two furthest things from each other, having a conversation was really funny,” Sam says when asked about the seeds of the project. “Then we read Ray Kurzweil...

Chicago – Here we are again, the end of another year, and it’s time to momentarily look back. Thus opens the 10 Best Films Of 2023, the list that represents one soul interacting with the art of cinema. That soul belongs to Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com, Wbgr-fm and Wssr-fm.
So begins my list, with such a lofty and third person proclamation. By far, the story of the year is Barbenheimer (the same weekend release of Barbie and Oppenheimer), proving in the digital age that something weird and organic can take hold, and get more people to the theaters, celebrating a true movie event. Kudos to the movie celebrators who did both in one magic day.
I format my 10 Best to reflect the on-air reviews I do weekly on Wbgr-fm and Wssr-fm and New on Missourinet.com. Each of the 10 Best will be in the on-air or audio format for your listening pleasure.

Dark Sky Films gave the The Third Saturday in October slasher double feature a VOD and digital release back in May, and while we haven’t heard word of a Blu-ray or DVD release yet, the movies have made their way onto the Tubi streaming service… and soon, they’ll also be available on VHS! Which seems very fitting for a pair of movies that are meant to be throwbacks to decades gone by. In addition to the limited run VHS release, both original scores composed by WU10 will be available to stream on all major platforms starting this Friday, October 20th. You can listen to a couple sample tracks in the embeds at the bottom of this article.
Pre-orders of the VHS release can be made through the official website. You can get a standalone The Third Saturday in October VHS, a standalone The Third Saturday in October Part V VHS,...

After world premiering to critical acclaim at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival, Ld Entertainment’s sci-fi thriller I.S.S. starring West Side Story Oscar winner Ariana DeBose has been picked up for U.S. release by Bleecker Street. The film directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite from Nick Shafir’s script will hit theaters nationwide at a date that has not been disclosed.
I.S.S. marks Bleecker’s second collaboration with Cowperthwaite following 2017’s Megan Leavey, and its fourth with Ld, which in addition to that true-life military drama, produced their films Anthropoid and Teen Spirit from Sean Ellis and Max Minghella, respectively. On paper, there isn’t really anything I find that appealing about writer-director Laurel Parmet‘s feature film debut: a 17-year-old girl growing up in a deeply conservative Christian community in Kentucky trying to find herself while also engaging in a secret romantic affair with her much older, married youth pastor. As someone who is not religious and has very little experience with religion, this is not a film that I would exactly rush out to see due to its subject matter. Yet in spite of these personal obstacles, while The Starling Girl is by no means a perfect movie, this is a film that I can’t help but admire due to how much talent and passion oozes from the screen.

"The Starling Girl" actor Lewis Pullman grew up with a front row seat to what a steadfast and commendable career in front of the camera looks like. The actor is the son of beloved "Independence Day" and "While You Were Sleeping" actor Bill Pullman. "My dad has just a plethora of good advice, but one that he's adamant about is subverting expectations," Lewis tells Popsugar when asked about the best acting advice he's received throughout his career. Lewis takes that wisdom to heart with his latest role in "The Starling Girl."
In the film, Lewis plays Owen, a morally grey, 20-something youth pastor who feels more suffocated and misunderstood than ever upon returning home to his fundamentalist Christian community after an eye-opening trip to Puerto Rico. "He is so excited by all these new approaches to his faith and how he can further his transcendence into his belief in God,...

This is what strong word of mouth looks like: Although the opening weekends (plus previews) for “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” were nearly the same, that’s where the resemblance ends for the Marvel titles. The first 10 days for “GOTG3” in the U.S./Canada stands at $213.2 million; “Ant-Man” grossed $213.9 in its entire domestic run.
That’s a huge relief for Disney. “GOTG3” fell shy of the $292.6 million grossed by “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” in the same time period last year, but that film fell 67 percent its second weekend. The “GOTG3” drop represented 49 percent.
It helps that it’s a feast-or-famine weekend, with “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” (Universal) at #2 with more than $7 million. James Gunn’s latest MCU film stands at $528 million worldwide so far. Uncertain is whether it can reach the $1 billion level sometimes seen pre-pandemic, especially against...

At just 23 years old, Eliza Scanlen has already amassed one of the most formidable filmographies of her Zoomer peers. “The Starling Girl” is just the latest addition to a sterling résumé packed with commercial success and indie darlings alike. If there’s anything that seems to unite her roles, it’s how one finds themselves within the context of a family unit. In projects like “Little Women” and “Babyteeth,” familial bonds can be a mostly positive and protective force — even if they can form a closed ecosystem from the world around them.

As cultural “discourse” becomes more aligned with scare-quotes than substantive conversations, putting a complicated piece of art into the world can be terrifying. “Sometimes, it’s scary to trust the audience,” said “The Starling Girl” writer and director Laurel Parmet. “It’s also invigorating and thrilling.”
Parmet’s directorial debut is loosely based on her own coming-of-age story, during which she had a relationship with an older man when she was just a teenager. Set against the backdrop of a patriarchal fundamentalist church community, “The Starling Girl” stars Eliza Scanlen as Jem Starling, a curious and clever teen whose world is upended by the return of intriguing young pastor Owen (Lewis Pullman). Drawn to each other despite many constraints that should keep them apart — their age difference, the power dynamic, and much more — their relationship serves as the catalyst for Jem fully coming into herself.

From “Saved!” to “The Miseducation of Cameron Post,” Sundance movies tend to paint fundamentalist Christians as severe, cult-like zealots, hellbent on brainwashing the next generation. While such portrayals can certainly be cathartic for those scarred by conservative upbringings, it’s a refreshing change to see this milieu treated with the level of nuance that Laurel Parmet brings to “The Starling Girl.”
Set in a small Kentucky town where morality is strictly enforced, Parmet’s promising, evenhanded debut focuses on a religious teen (“Little Women” star Eliza Scanlen) who’s never had reason to question her faith, until a crush on her handsome youth pastor (Lewis Pullman) awakens her sexuality and scandalizes the community. For the adults in this repressive rural enclave, organized religion seems to provide the discipline and structure they seek. But for 17-year-old Jem Starling, their values are starting feel like a straitjacket.

Despite everyone’s differences in upbringing, growing up is a difficult experience that is universal and nondenominational. While we all know this and have seen countless coming-of-age films that tackle the difficulty of discovering yourself, your wants, and your dreams, Laurel Parmet’s “The Starling Girl” puts a twist on the genre that explores Christianity, crushes, and power dynamics.
From the trailer, you can tell that this is going to be an emotional story following seventeen-year-old Jem Starling as she struggles to define her place within her fundamentalist community in Kentucky.

Writer-director Laurel Parmet’s The Starling Girl quickly draws us into the remote Kentucky community at its center, a place small enough that everyone knows everyone else. Wide-open spaces stretch out from it in all directions and keep the rest of the world at bay. Most importantly, it’s a place where all of life revolves around the church.
In this stifling place, every single move a person makes doesn’t escape Old Testament judgment. One early scene even shows us a teenager being forced to confess to the sin of watching pornography in front of the entire congregation so that they might forgive him.
Within this milieu, we meet 17-year-old Jem (Eliza Scanlen). At home, she’s forced to play the role of doting daughter, working tirelessly to care for her younger siblings. Her mother, Heidi (Wrenn Schmidt), watches her every move like a hawk, her face fixed in...

15. The Starling Girl (Laurel Parmet; May 12)
After breaking out in Babyteeth and Little Women, Eliza Scanlen finds an impressive new starring role with The Starling Girl. Michael Frank said in his review, “Scanlen shines as Starling, playing someone much younger than herself. She brings an assurance to the role. We belive in Jem. She’s naive-yet-overconfident, isolated-yet-connected, carefree-yet-shackled by a system designed to believe the word of men much older than her. Scanlen shows all of that and more. Her performance grounds a film that risks blending together with preceding pictures, raising it above any average trappings.”
