A new family drama starring Elizabeth Olsen has surprised viewers by becoming one of Netflix’s most watched movies. The film, titled “His Three Daughters,” follows three estranged sisters who reunite to care for their sick father. It now sits at number five on Netflix’s top 10 list.
The movie stars Elizabeth Olsen, Natasha Lyonne, and Carrie Coon as the three sisters. They must work through complicated relationships and memories from their past. Audiences have connected strongly with the touching story of family healing. Film critics also highly praise “His Three Daughters,” awarding it a 98% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Director Azazel Jacobs creates a blend of emotion and humor in his films. He brought that style to telling this family’s story. Jacobs is known for movies such as “French Exit” and “The Lovers.” His previous works skillfully mixed darkness with deeply human themes. Critics say he refined this talent for his latest film.

That Ending Of ‘His Three Daughters’ And The Habit of Bold Narrative Shifts in American Indie Cinema
Let me get into this straightaway. [Spoilers Ahead] During the climax of His Three Daughters, Jay. O. Sanders’ Vincent, aka the father, doesn’t magically get better and give that monologue to his daughters right before his death. Given the condition of his health throughout the movie, that seems quite impossible. Makes sense that didn’t happen, then. What really happened was that Katie, Christina, and Rachel took their father to his favorite lounge chair, where he died. Before his death, though, Vincent did briefly regain consciousness, but that’s about it. However, the important thing here is that the man actually got to see his three daughters united on one front while they were carrying him to his favorite plush chair. That’s the memory he left with, which does matter a lot here.
What exactly happened then? Well, Azazel Jacobs’ film took a sudden narrative shift where you, the audience,...

Indie filmmaker Azazel Jacobs makes a true New York movie with “His Three Daughters,” his profound and moving drama about a trio of sisters hemorrhaging emotions about their father, who is dying in the next room. Carrie Coon, Natasha Lyonne, and Elizabeth Olsen deliver career-class performances as Katie, Rachel, and Christina, respectively, who stress over how to write their father’s obituary and how to come together despite years of spite between them. And tensions bubble up in a monologue-driven, theatrical directing style where Jacobs holds on the performances in long takes where other directors might want to cut to a reaction shot or somewhere else.
“I wrote it to a cutting rhythm. I tried to write the script so it would move exactly how I wanted it to film,” Jacobs, who has explored New York stories before, from “French Exit” to “The Lovers” and his breakout, “Momma’s Man,” said in a recent IndieWire interview.

Dramas about death are hard to get right, yet His Three Daughters handles the difficult topic with grace. Death is the singularly most tragic thing most people have to deal with in their lives, meaning that it’s far too simple to lean on it as a crutch to get emotional reactions from the audience. Writer/director Azazel Jacobs clearly understands that, crafting a marvelously authentic story about three sisters growing apart and coming back together in His Three Daughters.

Netflix has released the official trailer and poster for His Three Daughters, the drama film written and directed by Azazel Jacobs. The movie has been rated R for language and drug use.
His Three Daughters premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 9, 2023. It will open in theaters on September 6, 2024, before launching on Netflix on September 20.
His Three Daughters is a bittersweet and often funny story of an elderly patriarch and the three grown daughters who come to be with him in his final days.
Katie (Carrie Coon) is a controlling Brooklyn mother dealing with a wayward teenage daughter; free-spirited Christina (Elizabeth Olsen) is a different kind of mom, separated from her offspring for the first time; and Rachel (Natasha Lyonne) is a sports-betting stoner who has never left her father’s apartment — much to the chagrin of her half-sisters, who share a different mother and worldview.

Between “Terri” (2011), “The Lovers” (2017), “and “French Exit” (2020), not to mention the series “Doll & Em,” filmmaker Azazel Jacobs has continuously delivered compelling human dramas. He returns with his first film in four years, “His Three Daughters.” Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2023—our review described it as “riveting”—Netflix, who acquired North American rights to the poignant drama last year, is finally releasing the film in September (read our review here).

Natasha Lyonne, Carrie Coon, and Elizabeth Olsen are coming home to their respective indie roots for grieving family drama “His Three Daughters.” The trio play the eponymous siblings for the Netflix film, which debuted at TIFF 2023. Coon stars as responsible sister Katie, who is tasked with carrying out her ailing father’s (Jay O. Sanders) end-of-life wishes. Olsen is her sister Christina who embraces the spiritual realm to cope with losing her dad, while Lyonne’s Rachel opts to smoke pot and disassociate.
The three estranged sisters come together once more to a New York apartment to care for their dying father and “try to mend their own broken relationship with one another,” per the film’s official synopsis.

One of the best films I saw at TIFF last year is finally getting a release nearly a year after its premiere. A single-location New York drama about quarreling siblings played by Carrie Coon, Natasha Lyonne, and Elizabeth Olsen? We’re all in.
Azazel Jacobs’ poignant and at times poisonous family portrait “His Three Daughters” premiered at TIFF last year to a mild splash, but it’s now primed to be one of Netflix’s major awards contenders in the coming season along with Malcolm Washington’s August Wilson adaptation “The Piano Lesson” and Jacques Audiard’s Cannes winner “Emilia Pérez.”
Katie (Coon), Christina (Olsen), and Rachel (Lyonne) convene at their childhood Lower Manhattan apartment to shake their dying father (Jay O. In “The Freshly Cut Grass,” there’s a scene that captures how people who’ve been married for a while, and are in the thick of raising children, can snipe at each other in dog-whistle ways that mean nothing and everything. Pablo (Joaquín Furriel), a professor at an agronomy college (he basically instructs his students about dirt), says that he thinks his teaching job is “shitty.” But his wife, Carla (Romina Peluffo), has no job at all (and is up for an interview), so she takes his comment as an insult. She snaps at him, then apologizes and lays her head on his shoulder; we think their snit is over. But Pablo doesn’t move a muscle, which leads her to say, “Does it bother you if I touch you?” No, he says, “how could it bother me?” Well, she explains, she wanted a hug. But there’s a power duel in play,...

Awards season may well be over for another year in the world of film, with the Oscars, BAFTAs, and Golden Globes just a distant memory now. But on Sunday evening, one of the biggest nights in British TV, the BAFTA TV Awards — this year hosted by comedians Rob Beckett and Ramesh Ranganathan — took place at London’s Royal Festival Hall. And on a night where the two most nominated shows, Black Mirror and The Crown, failed to snag a single win, Happy Valley, Top Boy, and The Sixth Commandment enjoyed great success in key categories, each taking home two awards apiece.
On the night, Sarah Lancashire won Leading Actress for her all-timer of a turn as police sergeant Catherine Cawood in Happy Valley, her second BAFTA for the same role. The show also snagged the public-voted Memorable Moment award for Catherine and Tommy Lee Royce’s (James Norton) remarkable final kitchen showdown.

Updated with complete winners list: Despite being up for four acting category awards, The Crown‘s final season left the BAFTA TV Awards empty handed tonight in London.
Elizabeth Debicki, Lesley Manville, Salim Daw and Dominic West were all snubbed, as the the likes of Matthew Macfadyen, Jasmine Jobson, Timothy Spall and Sarah Lancashire all triumphed and the Netflix show went out quietly.
There was also a major surprise in the International category, where little-known French drama Class Act beat the likes of Beef, The Bear and The Last of Us to win the prize. Among the most shocked was the show’s star Laurent Lafitte, who urged the audience to find and watch his show — to the amusement of the audience.

Vidya Balan shines in this witty remake that sees a married couple, both cheating on each other, on the verge of breaking up
The algebra of love is a multiple-choice conundrum in Shirsha Guha Thakurta’s debut, a witty remake of Azazel Jacobs’ romance The Lovers starring Debra Winger. Transporting the original story of a disaffected American couple caught up in extramarital affairs to Mumbai, Do Aur Do Pyaar often heads to the city’s beaches, whose shifting tides bring to mind the unpredictable ebb and flow of long-term relationships.

“How to Get to Heaven From Belfast,” the new series from “Derry Girls” creator Lisa McGee, has moved to Netflix from Channel 4.
Produced by Hat Trick Productions, the comedy thriller will start shooting in Northern Ireland later this year.
The project was announced by Channel 4 in August 2023. In a statement to Variety, the network cited “changes in editorial direction” and “rising costs” as to why the series could no longer move forward there.
“We loved Lisa McGee’s ‘How to Get to Heaven From Belfast’ and offered a substantial license fee to be its U.K. home,” a Channel 4 spokesperson said. “Unfortunately due to changes in editorial direction as the development process progressed, coupled with rising costs and the recent cooling in the U.S. co-production market, it became impossible to get the right international partner and funding plan in place. In 2008, the writer-director Azazel Jacobs made a small but vivid splash with “Momma’s Man,” a Sundance comedy about a troubled dweeb hiding out in the cocoon of his parents’ downtown Manhattan apartment. The parents were played by Jacobs’ own (the avant-garde filmmaker Ken Jacobs and his wife Flo), and the movie turned their overstuffed bohemian pack-rat museum of a loft into a tiny city of its own. “Momma’s Man” showed extraordinary promise, and in the 15 years since I’ve been waiting for Azazel Jacobs to make good on it. But while he has given us a compelling movie or two, they have all felt minor, and his last feature, “French Exit,” though it generated Oscar buzz for Michelle Pfeiffer, was equal parts charming and contrived.
Now, though, the angels have smiled. Jacobs has taken the leap I always wanted him to make and become a filmmaker of effortless and moving assurance.

Writer-director Azazel Jacobs has made a couple of indie pictures I really loved. French Exit gave Michelle Pfeiffer one of her meatiest roles in years and she ran with it in a delicious Paris-set tale. He also provided Debra Winger and Tracy Letts with terrific roles in the sophisticated The Lovers. And now Jacobs shows once again he knows how to attract top actors with well-written characters in the intimate drama His Three Daughters, which stars Carrie Coon, Elizabeth Olsen and Natasha Lyonne.
The trio play sisters gathering in the New York City apartment where their father (Jay O. Sanders) is down the hall (unseen for most of the film) and near death. Jacobs purposely wants the confined atmosphere to let the dialogue rise to the top. They have arrived to spend his final days with him, but also to renew their own dysfunctional dynamic.
