The series began development in 2008 when it was originally planned to air on AMC with Walton Goggins set to play the lead role. Three years after originally being developed at AMC, SundanceTV announced it had ordered the series for six episodes, to become the channel's first original scripted series.
Series created by Ray McKinnon. As an actor, he is best known for his role as Reverend Smith in the HBO series Deadwood (2004) and for his role as Lincoln Potter in the fourth season of the critically acclaimed FX show Sons of Anarchy (2008).
Despite playing mother and son, J. Smith-Cameron and Aden Young are only 14 years apart.
Paulie is a fictional town, and the series is filmed in Griffin, just south of Atlanta, GA.
