No pun intended - also is not the past that forms us? That has made us the person we are today? Of course if something terrible and quite life altering has happened ... shouldn't we try to deal with it? And this is exactly what is going on here. I would not say that the movie has a twist for me towards the end, though you may feel different. I just know that the movie is well told and well acted.
If you had a trauma and your mind does not want to remember - well what to do? The thriller part of this is nice I reckon, but you can tell it was made for tv I reckon ... seen worse though - but this could have been tighter pacing wise. Still a nice movie overall (no pun intended here either)

1st I need to mention I am annoyed by Netflix flagging it like a "top 10 movies", which intrigued me and made me watch it. My main interest was to watch some good french movie, to stay in touch with their cinematography and practice the language. Each year Cesars are warded. I wish Netflix made an effort and got licensed 2-3 of nominees and not flood us instead with mediocre productions.
I would not trash this movie as some people did in their reviews, but I would definitely not recommend it to anyone - for the sake of saving time. There are tons of better movies out there and life is too short.
The movie has some nice touches, but aside from being per moments really boring it is made so, that at some point, say 75% of it, if you pause and reflect, you will know the ending, since there is no other way the plot could go to.
Save your time and find something better to watch.

A family is brutally murdered and the son wakes up after a long coma. And then tries to find the truth what happend in this night with the help of a psychiatrist. The story is not terrible even when we have seen these twists before. What kills this movie is the unbearable slow pace. Everything takes forever. What I see more and more is that todays film makers obviously don´t know the difference between slow burn and simply boring. And this movie is so boring that I started to stream forward just to find out what happend. So for me the movie was only 30 minutes and this was okay. But the hour long sequences of going from one place to the other, staring at walls and so on, were just needless and tiring filler material.

This is an immersive film. You relate with Thomas as he tries to put the pieces together when he wakes up from coma. It's a slow burn but you don't mind because the story brings you somewhere and you want to be there when it ends even if it feels the story is going around in circles. And the ethereal musical score adds to the befuddlement.
This is a story that tackles how the brain creates or distorts reality specially when one undergoes trauma. In the case of Thomas, he has to figure out which events are real and which are augmented or constructed.
Txomin Vergez is credible as Thomas as he succeeds in portraying his situation. Rebecca Williams is equally convincing as Laura.
This is a thought-provoking film. It might be good for your mental health.

Like so many other movies, it sounds promising. There are moments when you feel it might actually be... good. Alas. It's not terrible. Just boring. I struggled to keep my eyes open more than with most "thrillers."
The acting is fair to middling. The plot twist was predictable. Perhaps I watch too many films but I guessed this twist long before I probably should have.
Do yourself a favor and watch "High Tension" instead. That one is simply brilliant and packs a serious punch. I bring this up because "Le patient" clearly was influenced or inspired by "High Tension." Sadly, it couldn't even come close.

As this French drama opens a family is found massacred in their home. Three years later nineteen year old survivor Thomas awakes from a coma. The psychologist caring for him tells him that he is the sole survivor and that his sister hasn't been seen since those events. She encourages him to try to remember just what happened while he is also undergoing physiotherapy. Gradually he, and we, learn just what happened that day.
I thought this was a decent drama. It is fairly slow burn and doesn't provide as many surprises as I suspects its makers think. I'm sure most viewers will have suspected how it will end long before the 'big reveal'. That said it managed to keep me interested throughout. The cast is solid, especially Txomin Vergez, who plays Thomas. There is a good atmosphere with limited settings giving it an almost theatrical feel at times. Overall a solid enough film; not a must see but worth a watch if you are a fan of French films.
These comments are based on watching the film in French with English subtitles.

I knew the ending when I read the description, but Netflix said it was number 10 in the top films on Netflix. I'm not sure with whom I'm more angry, myself or Netflix. I kept thinking there would be a surprise ending or some redeeming plot twist.....but noooo! Transparent plot line, horrid acting, predictable in a way that's almost mind blowing. To add insult to injury, the ending wraps up in a trite little bow in the last few minutes with horrible cliché little details. Seriously, this is almost two hours I will never get back and I feel like it stole some brain cells while I watched. Garbage. Absolute garbage.

Le Patient is a psychological horror and drama film. The premise is about a 19-year-old boy, Thomas, who wakes up from a 3-year coma to discover that his entire family has been murdered and his sister is missing.
To make matters worse, the killer is still on the loose. In a desperate search for facts, psychologist Anna Keifer decides to help Thomas with therapy sessions to unlock his hidden memories.
Is a terrible truth buried among its most intrinsic blocks? This factor keeps us hooked to Le Patient.
However, the film, based on a comic book, is predictable. Though clever, the plot twist isn't all that surprising. That doesn't detract from the fact that the plot is well constructed; but it works better as comics or narrative than as audiovisual content.

Only 30 minutes in and I'm done. It's hard to enjoy a "murder mystery" when I keep falling asleep from boredom. I actually Googled the ending to see if it would be worth my time, and it's definitely a hard no. I'm good with slow burn movies but this was asking too much of any human being to endure. I ended up giving it 2 stars because in fairness, I barely watched it... 1 star is reserved for movies I waded through and then kick myself for wasting my life on. Do yourself a favor and watch another international mystery... there's a lot of great series available (more time investment than movies, but who cares as long as it's quality).

This is a fascinating but also very intricate film. Main character Thomas awakes in a hospital after having been 3 years in coma, ever since he was found severely wounded as the only surviver amidst his murdered family. Along with Thomas we try to find out what happened, why it happened, and who was responsible. The movie continuously provides tiny fragments, that are alternately short realistic flashbacks or Thomas's interpretations thereof, or they are the product of his imagination or delusions. We see a psychiatrist patiently trying to help him to get his memory back. Very gradually the harsh truth begins to dawn on him and on us, although I have to admit that for a long time I did't see the major plot twist and the ultimate conclusion coming.
The acting of especially Txomin Vergez is really excellent, the movie is slow paced but the tension never sags, and it kept me on the edge of my chair until the very end. It was a great relief that the story came up in the end with the needed answers (in nowadays cinema there's a pretentious tendency to keep you dangling in some sort of limbo at the end of a mystery movie!), but there were still some things that eluded me: why was the psychiatrist walking with a crutch? What was the function of fellow patient Bastien? They seemed to be both victims of an accident, so maybe that was it?
Anyway: an impressive and intriguing, well acted movie that stayed in my head for a long time.

Apart from the lack of nudity (but does include a lesbian kiss), this takes me back to those French films they used to show late at night on BBC 2.
Despite watching the English dubbed version, it was still very French with a catch Baisers Bizarres theme song featuring Laura (Rebecca Williams) on vocals.
It is slow and moodily French and, despite her walking stick, even the psychologist Anna is most fanciable and very chic in her skirts and heels.
The film could only be more French if it had a onion seller on a bike and Vanessa Paradis in a citroen c5 driving around L'Arc De Triomphe.
Enjoyably different from the rubbish you generally see on Netflix.

This movie was interesting enough. It had a decent enough premise for the plot. A young boy is the only survivor of the brutal murder of his family. After that point he ends up in a hospital and the whole film is him exploring his past with his psycotrist. I will say it felt a little easy to figure out what was going to happen in the end but it did feel like something else could happen. That was not the case and it made the film feel a little dissapoiting. I wont say the film was terrible. It was good it just had terrible dialog in places but the acting was ok. Overall this was a movie you dont have to think to hard about but it was enjoyable enough to watch.

This movie is loosely based on the film "The Hypnotist" (Hynotisoren) from 2012, and starring Mikael Pernsbrant. Much better film. It's a thriller, it has mystery, and in my opinion, a much better plot. Skip this one and try to watch The Hypnotist.
The original is way more interesting, moves at a faster pace, and it doesn't try to be so "artistic". Everything is more clear, for lack of a better word. Explanations about what happened make sense, and it has a better resolution.
On top of that, it was directed by Swedish director Lasse Hallstrom, so you know the quality is going to be superior.

I have seen very stupid movies before, to be sure. I have been bored to complete aggravation before, too. Nonetheless, this movie is incredibly stupid AND boring. I have no idea what prompted me to watch this crap. I hung on until the end just to see if there would anything redeeming at all. Nope, not a thing. It was difficult to hang on. The movie jumped around to the point where I was having a hard time figuring what could possibly be going on in this story! The plot was slow, the characters nauseating, incredibly gloomy, and with unexplainable roles. Nothing redeemable about this movie at all! I have wasted my time watching it. I wanted to stop watching inside the first 15 minutes. I wish that I had done that.
It was that slow that I stopped watching it 10 minutes from the end out of spite. This should have been a 20 min short on Tales of the unexpected. It is repetative throughout and a story done many times over. I guessed the ending as soon as I saw the bodies 3 minutes into the start. Even writing this review is painful because it is saying I have 251 characters left to get through so I am going to stretch this out to give you a taste of what this movie is like. I hope you dont stop reading it 10 words out before the end like I did with the movie because I am enjoying wasting your time like the movie did...annnnd 0.

Thomas wakes up after a 3 year long coma and finds out his whole family is murdered. He then tries to find the truth what happened in this night with the help of a psychiatrist. The story is terrible beacuse it keeps going back and forth so fast that you lose the flow. What kills this movie is the unbearable slow pace and forced gay sex scenes that really do not belong. One of the people in the gay scene is not even alive. Everything takes forever. What I see more and more is that Netflix film makers obviously don´t know the difference between slow burn and simply boring. This movie is so boring that I started to stream forward and my wife fell asleep. The long sequences of going from one place to the other, staring at walls and so on, were just needless and tiring filler material. The gay scene was definitely filler material that netflix seems to be promoting.
Too slow, too predictable, too boring and too unoriginal Le patient fails on all levels even if you consider it as a time filler. It's not entertaining, not though provoking and the ending could be guessed from first couple of minutes if you're observant enough and do a couple of logical conclusions. Cinematography is unoriginal, score is basic and forgettable, although characters are doing okay work given the lackluster screenplay and entire idea.
Speaking of the idea, Piège pour Cendrillon is the one you want to watch/ read to understand how similar events could be described to keep you on the edge of your seat, that's underrated classic while this movie is a waste of resources.

This is the second offering from Netflix that has made me think I am losing my mind, I have lost my mind, or I am really really stupid. I don't like those feelings.
This thing was style over substance big time. I must've fallen asleep during part of it, but it's hard to know whether I did or not. There was hardly any dialogue.
Bottom line, I just didn't get it. Am I ready for a rubber room? I don't know. I figured the so-called mystery out right away, but I don't think that was really supposed to be a mystery. Was it? It was a little too obvious.
As for the rest of it, I didn't get it. I didn't care about it. I didn't know why I watched it. I really do enjoy complicated plots. But this wasn't complicated, it was completely insane.

I was looking for an insane plot twist, unfortunately my patience reached its limits.
After 30 minutes I changed the playback speed to 1.5. After another 5 minutes I started skipping the scenes. Just couldn't bring myself to finish the movie, and I like a slow-paced movie, if done correctly. This was just boring, too many long scenes with the protagonist just staring at stuff going back and forth between past and present.
I think the direction they were going for was at least interesting but I wish the execution would have been done better. As for the ending, nothing you haven't seen before. If you watched similar movies with a twist in the final act, this will not impress you.
Anyway I wouldn't recommend this movie, there are far better better movies with amazing twists out there.

If you like action movies with explosions and fight scenes every five minutes, well, I'm sorry but you should totally stay away from this one because you're gonna hate it.
The description could make you think the protagonist is going to turn into the punisher the moment he wakes up, but nope, that's not gonna happen.
It has a slow pace, so if you're not patient enough and don't tent to put attention to small details, again, don't even press play.
Seriously, it is a good movie, the actors did an excellent job, the music is good, the plot is entertaining, probably not the most original but overall is good.
I was gonna rating it with 8 stars but I picked 10 to give a little balance. People need to learn how to tell apart a good movie they just didn't like from a bad movie.

I would say this is a very interesting movie obviously not the best movie so not a 10. But i'd say a good 8 because the ending is pretty shocking, I see a lot of people saying it's boring. Obviously the start will be a bit boring, it's not supposed to be an action movie. This movie really gets you thinking, there's many people you will suspect. The movie is unsettling but the right amount of it. I definitely recommend this movie to people who like watching true crime or documentaries. Some people find those boring but if you find them interesting this is definitely the movie you will enjoy""""

Yes, the storyline is a bit slow but suits the idea of this movie. Dont understand the bad critics, its a nice movie to watch, good acting and deserves a better rate. Glad i didnt let the rate decide and watched it anyway. For those who love psychological thrillers this is one to see. Throughout the memories of Thomas who came out of coma the mistery of the murders in his house are being solved. Again: really good acting and the story line is well thought of. Just give it a try, you wont regret it. And no, there is nothing in it for me, hope good rates give more movies like this one at Netflix.
