Gena Rowlands, whose seminal and fearless performance in “A Woman Under the Influence” inspired a generation and who starred in many other John Cassavetes features as well as the romance “The Notebook,” died Wednesday at her home in Indian Wells, Calif. She was 94.
Her death was confirmed by the office of her son’s agent. In June, Nick Cassavetes, who directed his mother in “The Notebook,” shared that the three-time Emmy winner and two-time Oscar nominee had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.
Rowlands’ role as Mabel Longhetti in the 1974 drama “A Woman Under the Influence,” written for her and directed by husband John Cassavetes, landed the actor the first of two Academy Award nominations. The other nom was for “Gloria” (1980), also directed by her husband. In November 2015, she was awarded an honorary Academy Award at the annual Governors Awards in recognition of her storied career.

Sometimes a celebrity style steal is totally worth it. Case in point: Rosario Dawson copying Naomie Harris in this midnight blue stunner from the house of Vionnet. Sure the Skyfall actress wore it first, but the look is such perfection that the Parts Per Billion beauty was willing to try and wear it better. So was her red carpet risk worthy of a reward? Sadly, we're going to have to say no. Bottom line, some frocks fit some bodies better than others. The Trance star is fit, beautiful and wears every dress she dons spectacularly, but in the case of this plunging neckline and body-hugging bottom, Naomie's frame offers a more flattering shape. Was that a PC enough way of saying that the British actress just looks...

Los Angeles (AP) — A big reason film actors are drawn to TV is that it offers the sort of character-driven projects found less and less in a movie world tilted toward blockbusters. That's partly why Josh Hartnett jumped into "Penny Dreadful," an eight-part series debuting Sunday on Showtime (10 p.m. Edt) as part of a free preview weekend. He plays a troubled American, a gun for hire, ensnared by Victorian London's dark side in the horror drama-cum-psychological study. Hartnett also appreciated the guarantee that the project would be marketed and presented to an audience, something he's become painfully aware isn't always the case with independent films. "I've had worthy films not get a correct release, and have people come up to me later and say how much they enjoyed the film," seen after the fact online or on DVD, he said. "It's gratifying to know that people go back and see stuff,...

Rosario Dawson has been enjoying some downtime from acting for the past year, but you wouldn't know it after glancing at her IMDb profile. The actress who broke out in Larry Clarks' "Kids" back in 1995, had "Gimme Shelter" open this year and has a new film coming out this Friday, Diego Luna's sophomore effort behind the camera, "Cesar Chavez." On top of these two releases, Dawson has four more features scheduled to open before the year's end: the long gestating sequel to "Sin City," Atom Egoyan's new thriller "The Captive," Mark Webber's indie "The Ever After," and "Parts Per Billion," which she also produced. In "Cesar Chavez," Dawson plays real-life figure Dolores Huerta, a labor leader and civil rights activist who co-founded the National Farmworkers Association with the titular subject of Luna's biopic. For Dawson, the project is a unique one -- the actress was already close...

The elusive “Golden Ticket”. Beginning next Wednesday (December 4th) in a wave of four announcements, is when the official word comes out. Plenty of filmmakers are already in the know, but some will find out over the course of this Thanksgiving weekend. Having covered the festival and fest circuit for some time now, we’re already aware that worthy films that were indeed submitted will be excluded from the ’14 edition. Thousands of filmmakers won’t get the phone call, and while it can bruise dreams, this is not a rejection of quality…but rather, a preference from a programmer/programming team which reflects a larger mandate. John Cooper, Trevor Groth et al. have a difficult job and the way I see it, it’s the equivalent to draft day for a major professional sport – where a team in a given turn doesn’t go for the consensus pick, but instead...

Penn Badgley and Zoë Kravitz are officially back on! The couple showed supersweet Pda while vacationing together in Rome, Italy, on Sunday. They strolled side by side, cuddled during a meal, and took turns snapping photos of each other at the table. Penn even planted a smooch on his lady as she rested her head on his shoulder. Zoë and Penn appear to have reconciled since splitting in early June. They reportedly ended on "good terms" in the middle of their busy schedules, which included work on Penn's film Parts Per Billion and production on Zoë's Divergent in Chicago. The workload was clearly not enough to keep them apart, however, since they seem to be getting pretty hot and heavy during this overseas trip.

Wish You Were Here hit streets last Tuesday on DVD & VOD via the eOne Films folks, and we’ve got a clip of Aussie-born thesp Teresa Palmer (who’ll we will be seeing plenty of next year with Parts Per Billion, Malick’s Knight of Cups, Cut Bank, The Ever After) discussing the carefree character she portrayed in the psychological, tug of the rug type thriller.
Among the extras material on the disc, the clip below is among the set of cast and crew interviews (helmer Kieran Darcy-Smith, Felicity Price, Joel Edgerton, Antony Starr) that took place among what we imagine was the sun-drenched setting found in the film. While we don’t gain any additional insight into the character’s dynamic, we easily get a sense how she might approached her with a playfulness – which is of course how we are first presented to the character before the film switches in tone.

Teresa Palmer has her very own warm body on the way.
The 27-year-old Australian actress is expecting her first child with fiance Mark Webber, 33, and she shared the good news via Instagram on Monday, posting a photo of her sonogram next to a pair of baby booties.
"To my precious baby -- I'm so blessed to be your mama, we have been wishing for you for awhile," the "Warm Bodies" star wrote. "We love you so much and can't wait to kiss your little face and tiny toes. Thank you for hearing our prayers."
Her rep confirmed the pregnancy to Us Weekly, saying, "[Teresa] and Mark are over the moon excited and can't wait to add to their family." Webber also has a son with actress Frankie Shaw.
Palmer met her actor beau last September after some good old-fashioned Internet stalking. "This is actually really embarrassing," she admitted to the Herald Sun in March.

Rosario Dawson is yet another actress that has begun to work a lot, and then not always on the most convincing projects. This week, she’s been added to the cast of Atom Egoyan’s thriller-ish Queen Of The Night, playing an investigator opposite Ryan Reynolds.
Queen Of The Night has Reynolds starring as a man who comes to believe that his abducted daughter is still alive. He presumably will share this information with Dawson, who will initially not believe him but then come to realize that a man with abs like that must be right. And so, the chase is on!
I might sound facetious, but I feel facetious. I mean, I like Reynolds, but the plot as it stands sounds generic and predictable. I would love to see these two in a really dynamic film. Unless Egoyan has some interesting twists and clever cinematography up his sleeve for Queen Of The Night,...

With a leading man (that would be one Ryan Reynolds) in place and shooting set to start soon, Canadian director Atom Egoyan has tracked down the other main element for his new thriller Queen Of The Night. Rosario Dawson will be starring alongside Reynolds.Queen, whose plot is still largely under wraps save that it will find Reynolds as the father of an abducted child, was co-written by Egoyan and David Fraser, based on an idea by the director. As far as we know it has nothing to do with either the Whitney Houston song or the character in The Magic Flute. With cameras set to start whirring this month in Ontario, Egoyan also has Scott Speedman and Gangster Squad’s Mireille Enos signed on as part of the ensemble cast.Dawson has been busy of late, working on the likes of Gimme Shelter, Chavez and Parts Per Billion, which she’s also produced.
