Jennifer Lawrence may be a Hollywood heavyweight today, but even she’s haunted by a role that slipped through her fingers: Alice in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. During an interview on the Howard Stern Show, the Red Sparrow actress confessed that this lost opportunity devastated her.
While we know Lawrence today as a go-to star for bold roles, her early career was littered with auditions—some successful, some not so much. And this one? Losing out on Alice in Wonderland stung. She shared that, at the time, she and fellow actress Emma Stone were often up for the same parts, with this one hitting particularly hard. “Emma Stone and I had this conversation once, ’cause we used to always audition for the same thing…...

Lewis Carroll's 1871 fable "Through the Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There" features a notable scene wherein the young titular protagonist runs across a pair of whimsically dunderheaded identical twins while lost in an alternate dimension. The characters are named Tweedledee and Tweedledum and are based on numerous 18th-century folk poems variously attributed to John Byron, John Pope, and Jonathan Swift. In an early epigram by Byron, the two characters agree to have a battle but are startled by a crow, and forget to fight each other. It wouldn't be until the publication of "Through the Looking Glass," and John Tenniel's illustrations therein, that Tweedledee and Tweedledum would be depicted as identical twins.
In Carroll's book, the twins reenact the Byron epigram and flee when a crow appears. Some might say that Tweedledee and Tweedledum represent easily distracted governments, or merely the capriciousness of children. Either way,...

Tim Burton is one of our most distinctive filmmakers. Whether you love him, hate him, or land somewhere in the middle, there is no denying that Burton has a voice and that voice has become rather valuable. From proving that "Batman" could be an A-tier superhero franchise to producing undeniable classics like "Beetlejuice," he's been making his mark on cinema for decades. Burton's biggest moment came in 2010 when his live-action take on "Alice in Wonderland" hit theaters. Divisive though the movie may be, it made box office history at the time -- and what's more, it laid the groundwork for the next decade of blockbuster filmmaking in Hollywood, particularly at Disney.
In the modern era, a big blockbuster film making $1 billion or more at the box office is not all that uncommon. To date, 55 movies have made at least that much money worldwide. Rather crucially, though, the vast majority of...

Anne Hathaway credits Christopher Nolan for essentially saving her career amid backlash she received online.
In a new interview, the Idea of You star recalled that after she won an Oscar for Les Miserables and co-hosted the Oscars, she received a lot of vitriol, which affected her career.
“A lot of people wouldn’t give me roles because they were so concerned about how toxic my identity had become online,” Hathaway told Vanity Fair in a recent interview. “I had an angel in Christopher Nolan, who did not care about that and gave me one of the most beautiful roles I’ve had in one of the best films that I’ve been a part of.”

John Lennon will always be associated with LSD. Some of that association was warranted. However, John decried the notion that LSD inspired one of his songs.
John Lennon preferred LSD to other drugs
The book All We Are Saying: The Last Major Interview with John Lennon and Yoko Ono features an interview from 1980. In it, John discussed his opinion of LSD at length. “Acid is only real life in CinemaScope,” he said. “Whatever experience you had is what you would have had anyway. I’m not promoting, all you committees out there, and I don’t use it because it’s chemical, but all the garbage about what it did to people is garbage.”
John seemed to be more comfortable with LSD than other drugs. “A little mushroom or peyote is not beyond my scope, you know, maybe twice a year or something,” he said. “But acid is a chemical.

As the CIA characters overseeing the office monitors might say, “My god, it’s Jason Bourne!” TheWrap has learned that Universal has begun early development for what would be a sixth movie in the so-called Jason Bourne universe. Edward Berger, whose Netflix-distributed re-adaptation of “All Quiet on the Western Front” received nine Oscar nominations and won four, is in talks to possibly helm the next chapter.
There is no screenplay, nor has Matt Damon officially been approached, but the actor who starred in four of the five previous installments certainly has first right of refusal. Damon starred in “The Bourne Identity” in 2002, launching the ongoing spy franchise and reprising in three sequels. Jeremy Renner took over in “The Bourne Legacy,” a spin-off chapter released in 2012.
The Doug Liman-directed smash earned rave reviews and strong word-of-mouth in the summer of 2002, grossing $214 million worldwide on a $60 million budget. It also...

The Beatles were one of the most literate bands ever. Paul McCartney said The Beatles’ “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” reminded him of two books. John Lennon discussed a literary passage that inspired the song.
Why Paul McCartney and John Lennon loved The Beatles’ ‘Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds’
In the 1997 book Paul McCartney: Many Years From Now, Paul recalled the writing of “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.” “John had the title and he had the first verse,” he said. “It started off very Alice in Wonderland: ‘Picture yourself in a boat, on the river.’ It’s very Alice. Both of us had read the Alice books and always referred to them, we were always talking about ‘Jabberwocky’ and we knew those more than any other books really.” “Jabberwocky” is a poem from the second Alice book, Through the Looking-Glass.

“The Marvels” began its domestic box office run with just $6.6 million in Thursday preview grosses. That compares to the $20.7 million which “Captain Marvel” earned via advance-night showings in early 2019, which led to a $155 million opening weekend. A similar Thursday-to-weekend split (13.3%) would give the MCU action fantasy just $49.6 million for the weekend. That would be well below the $61 million that “Captain Marvel” earned on its first full day of theatrical release.
There is a grim irony that a major movie belonging to the MCU — a franchise that has often been credited (sometimes unfairly) with killing the movie star as a bankable variable — will open to comparatively miserable numbers partially because the trio of heroines — Brie Larson, Iman Vellani, Teyonah Parris — could not promote the film amid the SAG-AFTRA strike.

And in her peregrinations through these strange illogical worlds, she meets the White Rabbit, the Cheshire Cat, the King and Queen of Hearts, the Gryphon, the Jabberwock, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, Humpty Dumpty, the White Knight, and a host of many more.
‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’ (1865), or ‘Alice in Wonderland’, as it is more popularly known, and its sequel ‘Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There’ (1871-2) (‘Through the Looking-Glass’ more commonly) stand high both by themselves, and the adaptations that they have inspired across various media.

One of John Lennon’s favorite Beatles songs was “I Am the Walrus.” It’s also one of the band’s most confounding tunes. Based on the Lewis Carroll poem “The Walrus and the Carpenter” from Through the Looking-Glass, Lennon wrote intentionally confusing lyrics. He explained that when he went back over the source poem, he realized he’d misinterpreted it. He’d written the song about the wrong character.
John Lennon | Max Scheler – K & K/Redferns John Lennon didn’t realize ‘I Am the Walrus’ was about the villain
Lennon appreciated that “I Am the Walrus” was a song that listeners could find new meaning in every time they heard it. He wrote it based on “The Walrus and the Carpenter,” a poem he admitted to not understanding until after writing the song.
“It’s from ‘The Walrus and the Carpenter’; Alice in Wonderland,” he said in The Beatles Anthology.

Aussie actress Mia Wasikowska earned a reputation in the mid-2010s for insidious roles in indies like “Stoker” and “Maps to the Stars.” After Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland” and “Alice Through the Looking Glass” films found her briefly courting the mainstream, she largely faded from view to pursue passion projects and more prickly, socially conscious fare like last year’s “Blueback” and this year’s “Club Zero.” The new film set in a boarding school and around new teacher Miss Novak’s (Wasikowska) unusual methods makes Austrian director Jessica Hausner one of seven women in a record-breaking competition section. Within the walls of the boarding school, it’s not long before other teachers notice their new hire is teaching young students of the Gen Z set that eating less is somehow healthier.
Written and directed by Hausner, “Club Zero” is about many things, namely how the idealism of...

Johnny Depp’s once white-hot career has flamed out in the wake of his many scandals, but the controversial actor has every reason to expect a movie star welcome when he hits Cannes on Tuesday for the premiere of “Jeanne du Barry.” The costume drama is Depp’s first leading role in three years, a period of time in which the star has mostly made headlines for his ongoing legal battles with ex-wife Amber Heard.
But through that tempestuous period, one that saw Depp fired from high-profile projects like the “Harry Potter” spinoff franchise “Fantastic Beasts,” Europe has remained a port in the storm. He has continued to be celebrated at film festivals throughout the continent with audiences loyally showing up to see the movies he has managed to make in between tabloid appearances. For its part, Cannes has pushed back at suggestions that it shouldn’t be offering Depp...

Nothing's a surefire bet in Hollywood until it is. Few took "Star Wars" seriously until it forever changed the movie landscape in 1977, ushering in our modern blockbuster era. Many were just as skeptical of the very concept of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, right up until "The Avengers" became the highest-grossing non-James Cameron movie ever at the time of its release in 2012. But when it did, you can bet your bottom dollar studios did everything in their power to replicate that success as quickly as possible -- and you can be just as well-assured that the outcome was often more regrettable than not.

The Beatles‘ Magical Mystery Tour LP contains some of the Fab Four’s most famous songs. In addition, it features an obscure George Harrison composition that’s incredible. Here’s a look at the five best songs from The Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour.
The Beatles’ ‘Magical Mystery Tour’ | Michael Ochs Archives / Stringer 5. ‘Blue Jay Way’
The Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour contains many famous songs and “Blue Jay Way” is not one of them. It’s one of George’s more obscure compositions. That makes sense, because it certainly doesn’t have a traditional pop hook. Despite this, the song’s chillingly slow tempo hypnotizes the listener.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the real Blue Jay Way is just a street in Los Angeles. Despite this, George makes it sound mysterious and surreal. The fact that he wrote “Blue Jay Way” as well as effective love songs like “Something” and “What...

When Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" hit theaters in 2010, it was hard to imagine it would be as monumental as it ended up being. Yet, Burton's reimagining of the Disney classic in live-action proved to be a $1 billion hit at a time when crossing the $1 billion mark at the box office was exceptionally rare. In the decade and change since, Disney has reimagined several classics with varying degrees of success. Now? The studio is aiming to capitalize twice on more recent films, beginning with a live-action take on 2016's "Moana."
Yesterday, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson confirmed in a flashy video that a live-action version of the Oscar-winning animated film is on the way and is in very early development. A press release implied that Johnson will star in the film, though very little else has been revealed at this time. What this news does reveal, however, is quite...

Paul McCartney and John Lennon were both inspired by surreal and colorful imagery and often incorporated these images into The Beatles‘ songs. The two were fans of Lewis Carroll, who is responsible for some of the most imaginative stories, such as Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. Their interest in Carroll can be heard in their songwriting, as Carroll’s writing inspired several Beatles songs.
Here are 5 Beatles songs inspired by Lewis Carroll books ‘Yellow Submarine’ Paul McCartney and John Lennon | Cummings Archives/Redferns
“Yellow Submarine” was written by McCartney and Lennon, and featured contributions from Scottish musician Donovan. The Revolver track was The Beatles’ attempt at creating a children’s song, and Donovan said Alice in Wonderland was an inspiration for this.
“Children’s songs were easy for me because I had absorbed so much poetry,” he explained in a 2008 Goldmine interview. “My father had read me Robert Louis Stevenson,...

“I Am the Walrus” is one of The Beatles’ most bizarre and surreal tracks. The song was written by John Lennon, who, according to Paul McCartney, also provided many of the weirder moments that improved the track.

Mia Wasikowska has spoken about her decision to step out of the Hollywood limelight in the late 2010s to return to her native Sydney, Australia.
The now-33-year-old actor landed her breakthrough role leading Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland (2010) opposite Johnny Depp. She was 21 at the time.
The film’s box office success catapulted Wasikowska to fame among the Hollywood “It girls” of the era.
Her career continued on an upward trajectory as she booked starring film roles in Jane Eyre (2011), Stoker (2013), Madame Bovary (2014) and Crimson Peak (2015).
However, it was just after she reprised her role as young Alice in Burton’s spinoff, Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016), that she disappeared from the big screen.
“I want to do more things in life other than be in a trailer,” Wasikowska recently told IndieWire in a new interview. “I didn’t entirely like the lifestyle of going back to back to back.

Mia Wasikowska seemed to be everywhere at one point. Starting in 2010, the young actress was on a seemingly unending spree of plum roles in indie films and studio products alike, from Cary Fukunaga’s “Jane Eyre” to “Alice in Wonderland” and “The Kids Are All Right,” “Maps to the Stars,” Tracks,” “Stoker,” and “Crimson Peak.” But it seemed to stop when Tim Burton’s “Wonderland” sequel “Alice Through the Looking Glass” sputtered, a financial bleed-out for Disney that also took a critical beating, though not for Wasikowska’s performance. A not unheard-of phenomenon then occurred: A once in-demand, ubiquitous performer suddenly seemed to have vanished.
Well, the Australian actress never went away, exactly — she just stepped out of the limelight. “I want to do more things in life other than be in a trailer,” she told IndieWire in a recent interview discussing her new film “Blueback,” an endearing eco-conscious message...

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Star Trek: Picard episode ‘Disengage’. Proceed with caution.
England-born actor Ed Speleers is no stranger to fantastical action-adventure roles — his big cinematic breakout came as the title role of the 2006 adaptation of high-fantasy epic Eragon. Since then, he’s worked steadily both in and out of genre work, including a stint as Jimmy Kent on Downton Abbey and roles in Outlander and Alice Through the Looking Glass.
But 2023 has been a big year for Speleers: Not only does he have a prominent role in the fourth season of Netflix’s You, but he’s also been inaugurated into the annals of Star Trek royalty in the third and final season of Star Trek: Picard. As we learned in the second episode of the season, which premiered this week, Speleers’ mysterious character isn’t just the wry, laconic son of Gates McFadden’s Beverly Crusher...

Leonis Productions, the Newen Studios-owned French banner created by Jean-Benoit Gillig, is developing a raft of international shows on the heels of “Liaison,” Apple TV+’s first French original.
The company reached a milestone with “Liaison,” a thriller series created and entirely penned by Virginie Brac (“Spiral”) and directed by Stephen Hopkins. Vincent Cassel and Eva Green lead a cast that includes Peter Mullan, Gérard Lanvin, Daniel Francis, Stanislas Merhar, Irène Jacob, Laëtitia Eïdo, Eriq Ebouaney, Tchéky Karyo, Bukky Bakray and Thierry Fremont.
“It’s a sprawling French-British thriller set against the backdrop of Brexit, and there’s a metaphor between the love tragedy playing as the primary plot and the political tragedy embodied by Brexit unfolding in the background,” said Gillig.

Some of The Beatles‘ songs that became huge hits are mostly forgotten today. On the other hand, some of The Beatles’ songs that remained album tracks are as popular as ever. Notably, a very famous Beatles album track has its own music video.
The Beatles | Bettmann / Contributor 5. ‘A Day in the Life’
“A Day in the Life” is one of The Beatles’ most acclaimed songs and one of the most important songs in the history of psychedelia. It even had a star-studded music video featuring appearances from Mick Jagger and Mike Nesmith. Despite this, the song was never actually a single.
Fans can find a lot in the song by reading between the lines. Much of the song’s lyrics revolve around mundane things like going to the movies or combing one’s hair. The music turns horribly sinister at several points in the track. Perhaps the song is about...

One of the best parts of "Lost" season one was its flashback structure. This was a show with a massive cast, and having each episode give us a close look at a specific character's life helped to make them all feel special and compelling. The "Lost" writers understood how to play with our expectations, so season 1 was filled with flashbacks that radically reshaped our understanding of certain characters. Most notable is "Walkabout," the fourth episode of the series, which reveals in its final moments that John Locke (Terry O'Quinn) had been paralyzed from the waist down prior to the plane crash.
Even when it wasn't blowing our minds with any big revelations, the flashback structures still helped to deepen our understanding of each character and add context to their current struggles. If "Lost" had chosen to simply stick to the on-island storylines, the show would've been worse off for it.

During the late 1960s, The Beatles entered a more psychedelic era. The album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and the Magical Mystery Tour movie were paired with colorful images and surreal lyrics, partly because The Beatles began experimenting with LSD and psychedelic drugs. John Lennon said one of The Beatles’ more surreal songs came to Lennon after experiencing two acid trips.

Garbus discussed the criticism surrounding Harry & Meghan — and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex — in a Jan. 24 Vanity Fair interview.
“People are very happy to read everything about Harry and Meghan when it’s somebody else writing about them,” the Emmy-winning filmmaker said. “But when Harry and Meghan want to tell their story in their own words, it suddenly becomes an issue.”

Garbus, the Oscar-nominated director of such acclaimed documentaries as “What Happened, Miss Simone?” and the HBO series “I’ll Be Gone in the Dark”, spoke with Vanity Fair about how her own involvement with Buckingham Palace gave her a unique look into what the Duke and Duchess of Sussex claim to have experienced.
“For instance, Buckingham Palace said that we didn’t reach out for comment [on the docuseries] when we did,” Garbus said.

It’s easy to take Anne Hathaway for granted. She’s that smart tall girl who always does her homework, raises her hand, and knows the answer. She’s been in demand in Hollywood since her 2001 breakout in “The Princess Diaries” and she’s been rewarded for her doing her best: She earned a Best Actress Oscar nomination for her recovering addict in Jonathan Demme’s 2009 drama “Rachel Getting Married, and she won the Supporting Actress Oscar in 2013 for her moist and skeletal singing of “I Dreamed a Dream” in “Les Misérables.”
And then, social media slagged Hathaway for her goody-two-shoes perfectionism. At last week’s Elle annual Women in Hollywood tribute, Hathaway admitted that her time in the virtual hate box left scars. “Ten years ago, I was given an opportunity to look at the language of hatred from a new perspective,” she said. “For context — this was a...

Johnny Depp is dating one of his former lawyers, but it is not Camille Vasquez, who shot to fame during his defamation trial against Amber Heard.
The 59-year-old actor has reportedly found love again with U.K.-based lawyer Joelle Rich.
She represented him in his 2020 U.K. libel lawsuit but is only said to have offered moral support — rather than professional — when he faced his ex-wife in a court in Virginia earlier this year.
During the televised defamation lawsuit, the rumor mill went wild with claims that the former Pirates of the Caribbean star was dating his lawyer, Vasquez.
Vasquez, who became a social media sensation, said in an interview that she was disappointed in the rumors of a romance with Depp and called the notion sexist.
