The film was shot in May, 2013, under the title 'Anyone's Ghost'. A 1 minute 24 second teaser video was published 8/30/2013 under the title "Anyone's Ghost". Its official trailer video was published 11/11/2013 under the title "Chasing Ghosts". The use of "Anyone's Ghost" as the title of a single by the band "The National" may have contributed to the film's title change.
Mace Coronel auditioned for the part of Lucas but they decided to go with an older boy and chose Toby Nichols.
Bryson Sams was originally cast as the role of "Lucas," but when it was decided that the character should be younger, Sams was given the role of the older brother.
