Nicole Scherzinger has brought her Olivier-winning performance in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Sunset Boulevard” to Broadway. And rave reviews for her performance as the silent movie queen Norma Desmond staging a comeback could well win her a Tony Award next June. While some reviewers expressed reservations about the overall effect of Jamie Lloyd‘s restaging of this 1995 Best Musical Tony champ, they all heaped praise on its leading lady. Scroll down for just a sampling of these notices.
The original edition of “Sunset Boulevard” dominated the 1995 Tonys, taking home a lucky seven trophies. This radical remounting replicated that haul at the recent Olivier Awards. It was that success which propelled this production across the pond.
This revival looks vastly different than the original, which painstakingly recreated the 1950 Oscar-winning film. Its bare set and minimal costumes aren’t likely to register with the Tony Awards nominating committee. However Jack Knowles and Adam Fisher,...

When Andrew Lloyd Webber’s stage adaptation of the 1950 Billy Wilder film Sunset Boulevard premiered in London in 1993 and on Broadway the following year, it was arguably the last gasp of the ‘80s megamusical aesthetic — at least until shows like The Lion King and Wicked came along to tweak the formula. The success of blockbusters like Cats, Les Misérables, The Phantom of the Opera and Miss Saigon was driven as much by their large-scale spectacle as their musical craftsmanship. Probably more.
Audiences flocked to Cats for its then-revolutionary immersive junkyard staging and the climactic ascent to the heavens of faded feline Grizabella on an outsized tire. In Les Mis, it was the massive turntable and the big reveal of the Paris Uprising barricade. Phantom brought a huge chandelier crashing down on the stage and Miss Saigon flew in a helicopter to evacuate the last Americans at the end of the Vietnam War.

Betrayal tells the harrowing story of three brothers—John, Henry, and Vince—who band together to exact revenge on their abusive father after years of suffering under his cruel rule. Set in the remote Scottish Highlands, the film paints a distressing portrait of domestic violence through Rodger Griffiths’ taut direction and deeply felt performances from the talented cast.
Daniel Portman, Brian Vernel, and Calum Ross give raw, compelling turns as the brothers aiming to rid themselves forever of their tyrannical dad, played with chilling menace by veteran actor Paul Higgins. Suffice it to say, this is no ordinary father-son drama. After their beloved mother’s tragic death, the brothers reach their breaking point and hatch a plan to lure the man into the woods on a hunting trip, with murder in mind. But as they quickly discover, retaliation often breeds more retaliation, and long-buried secrets threaten to destroy the fragile trust holding their alliance together.

In Betrayal, three desperate brothers return to the remote Scottish woodland where they killed their abusive father only to discover his shallow grave is now empty, forcing them to question each other’s loyalty as fear and paranoia set in.
The movie stars Paul Higgins, Brian Vernel, Daniel Portman, Calum Ross, Anita Vettesse, James Harkness, and Joanne Thomson, and is an absolute must-watch. While not a traditional "horror movie" per se, it will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish and features powerhouse performances from its impressive cast.
Ross is fantastic in the movie and, for those of you familiar with his work from Netflix's Wednesday or on stage in the West End as part of Stranger Things: The First Shadow, you can expect yet another stellar portrayal of an incredibly complex character here.

True crime fans, did we just miss one of the best true crime docs last month? Or did I just somehow let it slip under the radar? I’m talking about Betrayal: A Father’s Secret on Hulu, which premiered on July 30 but I only recently learned about it.
I’m usually on top of true crime as it is one of my favorite genres. So as soon as I realized I missed the premiere date, I ran to stream all three episodes. Is it worth watching? Absolutely! Here’s everything you need to know in case you have not streamed the latest season.
Betrayal is a true crime docuseries on Hulu that is based on cases that are covered on the podcast of the same name. The first season is titled Betrayal: The Perfect Husband and follows the story of a wife who is shocked to learn that her...

Now that players have had a fair bit of time exploring Shadow of the Erdtree, the general verdict is finally out. Elden Ring‘s one and only expansion is, without a shadow of a doubt, one of the most remarkable and challenging gaming experiences FromSoftware has ever produced.
From a lore standpoint, though, there are still many questions that need to be answered, especially about Miquella. Recently, one of the more prominent points of discussion involves the relationship of the controlling Empyrean with our Spectral Steed, Torrent.
Why Was Miquella Riding Torrent in Shadow of the Erdtree’s Promo Art? The image that Shadow of the Erdtree was announced with led many to speculate that Miquella would be a direct ally. Image Credit: FromSoftware.

There are very few names in the manga world that are as big as Eiichiro Oda. The manga creator’s magnum opus, One Piece, has helped him stay at the top for almost 30 years, and no other mangaka has managed to achieve what Oda has accomplished in his life. He is one of the biggest legends in the game, and his global fanbase proves that.

There’s been a lot of heat around London’s new Romeo & Juliet, understandably so given its pairing of director Jamie Lloyd (Betrayal, A Doll’s House), known for his radical remodeling of classics, usually around A-list actors, with young global superstar Tom Holland. The latter is returning to the stage for the first time since Billy Elliot: The Musical at the very start of his career, his name causing tickets to sell out in just two hours.
It’s ironic, then, that one thing this production itself lacks is heat — romantic, dramatic, tragic heat. There is much to commend, but it suffers from a single, strategic mistake on the director’s part, to mute the action, quite literally, since much of it is played in whispers and mumbles; even miked, at times the actors are barely audible. As one of the most innovative and talented creators in mainstream showbiz, Adi Shankar proudly flaunts his pop culture fanboy cred through his projects. But most importantly, he knows how to amalgamate the good bits of popular IPs of yesteryear with contemporary sensibilities seamlessly and deliver a unique work of art at the same time. His collaboration with Netflix has proved to be a blessing for the streaming service, which has resulted in the creation of not only arguably one of the best animated franchises in recent years in the form of the Castlevania series, but also a better live-action satire of the oversaturation of superhero culture than The Boys, with the underrated The Guardians of Justice. With the recently released six-episode animated series Captain Laserhawk: Blood Dragon Remix, an adaptation of Ubisoft’s Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, Adi Shankar expands his Bootleg Universe (fan-made adaptations of popular IPs) on Netflix,...

The elite and prestitious graduate acting program of New York’s The Julliard School will go tuition-free beginning this fall, a massive shift in the economics of arts schooling and student opportunities.
The school announced the move today, explaining that the four-year masters program, which currently costs each student about $53,300 per year, will eliminate the tuition after having raised $15 million including key gifts from Broadway theater producers Stephanie P. McClelland and John Gore.
The fourth year of the four-year program has always been tuition free in order for the school to compete with the many three-year arts schools, but the switch to entirely tuition-free is a major change in the world of elite arts education.
In a statement, the school said this morning, “Today we announced that the Drama Division’s Mfa in Acting will join Julliard’s growing list of tuition-free programs. Beginning in fall of 2024, all four years...

Over the course of 10 seasons, Bravo’s “Vanderpump Rules” has evolved into something no one could possibly have imagined when it premiered in 2013. A chronicle of the personal lives of restauranteur (and “Real Housewife“) Lisa Vanderpump’s young employees, the series is not only the first truly great work of art to emerge from the reality TV genre but one of the most involving and expertly assembled shows on television, period. What began as a soapy account of attractive 20somethings trying to make it in Hollywood (a sort of mashup between the “Real Housewives” franchise and MTV’s “The Hills”) has become a layered, poignant meditation on what it means to grow up, acquiring the breadth and depth of a great novel without abandoning its fizzy pop surface.

As non-industry folk are hopefully learning during the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, the vast majority of the union's members are not multi-millionaires. Acting is a job, and if you want to maintain a successful career, you can't always be as picky as you'd like to be. You have to audition aggressively, take what's offered, and, as soon as you've completed the gig, start fretting about doing it all over again.
If you're really lucky, you might eventually piece together a body of work that serves as a calling card. At this point, you're a known quantity, someone for whom a writer might create a character. Or perhaps your strengths as a performer will make you a director's first choice for a specific role.
For most actors, it's a long, hard road to this kind of rare success, and once they've attained it, they take nothing for granted. That's why someone like...

Celebrity couple Rachel Weisz and Daniel Craig looked elegant at the 2023 Wimbledon Championships over the weekend, as the pair wore sunglasses to watch the men’s singles final between Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz. The 20-year-old Spaniard went on to win in an upset.
The married couple donned formal outfits in addition to the spectacles. Weisz wore a light khaki blazer over a white collared shirt, while her husband opted to wear a light gray suit over a white collared shirt and gray striped tie, the only pop of color being a crimson pocket kerchief.
Craig and Weisz have been married since 2011, tying the knot in a private (and secret) ceremony with only four people in attendance: Craig’s daughter, Ella, Weisz’s son, Henry and two close friends. In September 2018, the couple welcomed their first child together, a daughter whose name has not been announced to the public.

Hulu is continuing its summer of true crime with new docuseries Betrayal: The Perfect Husband, which tells the story of a brave high school student who spoke up about being sexually assaulted by her teacher Spencer Herron.
The focus of this docuseries is one that true crime fans may already be familiar with through the hit podcast Betrayal, which explored Herron’s crimes. Hulu’s adaptation of the podcast attempts to add more depth to this story as it tracks how, while Herron was manipulating those around him, he was able to maintain the persona of a beloved teacher as well as a loving husband. Jenifer Faison thought she was living a fairytale romance with her college sweetheart until, one afternoon in June 2018, she discovered that the man she deemed to be her perfect husband was living a double life.

Jessica Chastain was terrified to return to the stage.

Sir Ben Kingsley, 79, has one foot planted in Beverly Hills, the other in Oxfordshire, England — nearly 200 miles southeast of his native Lancashire, where he was raised by his British model and actress mom and his father, a Kenyan-born family doctor of Indian descent.

Wine is front and center, per usual, at this year’s Sonoma International Film Festival, where Kingsley is attending the world premiere of “Jules,” from director Marc Turtletaub and writer Gavin Steckler.
