The success of blockbusters like Cats, Les Misérables, The Phantom of the Opera and Miss Saigon was driven as much by their large-scale spectacle as their musical craftsmanship. Probably more.

Audiences flocked to Cats for its then-revolutionary immersive junkyard staging and the climactic ascent to the heavens of faded feline Grizabella on an outsized tire. In Les Mis, it was the massive turntable and the big reveal of the Paris Uprising barricade. Phantom brought a huge chandelier crashing down on the stage and Miss Saigon flew in a helicopter to evacuate the last Americans at the end of the Vietnam War.

USA Network has found its star for their reboot of John Grisham’s The Rainmaker.

Mad Men alum John Slattery will be leading the yet-to-be-announced cast of the drama from Lionsgate Television and Blumhouse Television that counts Grisham, along with writer Michael Seitzman (Code Black, Intelligence), Jason Richman (Stumptown, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon), David Gernert and Jason Blum as executive producers. Richman and Seitzman co-wrote the pilot.

Slattery will play Leo F. Drummond, one of Grisham’s most iconic characters, a legendary lion of the courtroom and senior partner at Tinley Britt, the powerful firm that Rainmaker protagonist Rudy Baylor is up against.

Keanu Reeves will make his Broadway debut in Waiting for Godot.

The play, directed by Jamie Lloyd, will come to Broadway in fall 2025. Reeves will play Estragon and Alex Winter, an actor and co-star with Reeves in Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, will play Vladimir in the revival of Samuel Beckett’s play.

Reeves is well-known for his starring roles in the John Wick series, the Matrix films, Dangerous Liaisons, Something’s Gotta Give, Parenthood and more.

Reeves struck up a friendship with Winter after the filming of Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. Winter recently wrapped production on Adulthood, which he directed and starred in with Josh Gad and Kaya Scodelario. He has also directed the documentaries The YouTube Effect, Zappa, Showbiz Kids and The Panama Papers.

Hulu is continuing its summer of true crime with new docuseries Betrayal: The Perfect Husband, which tells the story of a brave high school student who spoke up about being sexually assaulted by her teacher Spencer Herron.

The focus of this docuseries is one that true crime fans may already be familiar with through the hit podcast Betrayal, which explored Herron’s crimes. Hulu’s adaptation of the podcast attempts to add more depth to this story as it tracks how, while Herron was manipulating those around him, he was able to maintain the persona of a beloved teacher as well as a loving husband. Jenifer Faison thought she was living a fairytale romance with her college sweetheart until, one afternoon in June 2018, she discovered that the man she deemed to be her perfect husband was living a double life.

On April 12, Max confirmed that an original Harry Potter television series is a go, noting that it'll be a "faithful adaptation" of the series, per the press release. Moreover, each season of the show will cover one of the books.

ABC News Studios has announced its summer slate of true crime docuseries, including an exploration of the rise and fall of scandalous dating site Ashley Madison.

The four series — “The Ashley Madison Affair,” “Betrayal: The Perfect Husband,” “Mother Undercover” and “Demons and Saviors” — will premiere throughout July and August, with each featuring multiple parts.

Tyne Daly and Liev Schreiber will return to Broadway this winter in a revival of John Patrick Stanley’s play Doubt: A Parable.

The play, directed by Scott Ellis, is scheduled to begin performances in February 2024 at the American Airlines Theatre. Exact dates and additional castmembers will be announced at a later date.

This is the first Broadway revival of Stanley’s 2004 play, which was adapted into the 2008 film starring Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman. The story follows Sister Aloysius (Daly), a principal of an all-boys Catholic school in the Bronx, who suspects a relationship between Father Flynn (Schreiber) and a student. Aloysius must then figure out how to verify whether something has occurred, whether to confront either party about it and how she can reconcile that with her religious beliefs.

Bruce Miller has stepped down from his post as showrunner of the “The Handmaid’s Tale,” passing his duties on the sixth and final season to Eric Tuchman and Yahlin Chang, who already served as writers and executive producers.

Dutch outfit Dfw International has agreed a North American sale on Thomas Nauw and Dennis Bots’ war drama Betrayal with Epic Pictures.

The film has its market premiere at the European Film Market this week.
