Didnt expect much, but was pleasantly surprised! Riveting fight scenes and great characters.
I am a fan of this action movie genre, but there are so many below average action movies that I didnt expect much at firsthand, but after having watched it I can confirm that this movie is quite an enjoyable action flick.
The good: I NEED riveting action, chases and fights. And THAT is exactly what I got. Not the best, but good enough for me to have a fun time watching it.
More good: what's even more to like is that the characters are credible. The acting is solid (not earthshattering good, but solid) and it has got characters and a storyline I can believe in. THAT matters to me, because even in an action flick like this I WANT the characters to be credible.
Any bad? Dont expect action heaven, this is just another action movie but a really solid one. Recommended for the fans of this action genre.

A movie written by a kid
This movie is either written by a kid or by a low budget Xbox 360 video game writer
And weirdly it's not that bad, it's really not good either
Also I don't understand why it's shown in English when the actors have the worst accent possible.
The story is very basic, the actors are not really good, thankfully it's not too long, which makes it okay to watch if you want to clear your mind and not have to think too much.
It's cool to see Taipei and Taiwan.
There are a lot of flashbacks and the way to show that the characters are in the past is to have them have long hairs, in the past they all have long hairs and in present all short.

A Waste of a Beautiful Location
The only redeeming feature of Weekend in Taipei was Taipei itself. The cinematography managed to capture some beautiful shots of the city and culture. Unfortunately, that's where the positives end.
The movie was incoherent, with characters that felt one-dimensional and difficult to connect with. Any emotional moments were weighed down by poor dialogue, making it hard to feel anything for the characters.
It's a shame that such a gorgeous setting was wasted on a standard and dull action popcorn flick. If you're hoping for an engaging story, you won't find it here. The action parts (apart from some of the opening sequences) were disappointing.

Weekend in Taipei feels more like a week in Taipei due to the messy, long-winded moments.
Weekend in Taipei is a new action thriller directed and partly written by George Huang. In the 90s he directed two previous films, but since then he has retreated more to TV film and series director.
DEA agent John Lawlor (Luke Evans) is working on the case, to make the corrupt businessman Kwang (Sung Kang) more public about his wrongdoings, so that he can be arrested.
When he goes away for a weekend, he comes into contact with Kwang and his corrupt business again through his former partner Joey (Lun-Mei Gwei). It seems that everything was predestined by their previous contact so that they can try to end Kwang's wrongdoings together.
With this film George Huang seems to be trying to make a comeback as a film director. He gets some help from Luc Besson, who worked on the story of the film and also partly produced it. George Huang's comeback might have been more successful if Luc Besson had helped him a bit more as co-director, because independently he ended up with a somewhat messy film.
The story is messy and has some long-winded and repetitive moments. This slows down the pace of the films a bit and it seems as if you are watching a week in Taipei instead of a weekend. Furthermore, it is also predictable and seems to lack some critical details. For example, a character is kicked out of a car, but in the next scene he suddenly disappears, because he is already fleeing from the other.
George Huang knows how to beautifully film the film at times and to beautifully capture the location, but here he unfortunately also has some messy aspects. For example, it feels as if you are looking through holiday photos of someone's trip to Taipei, but he is trying to rush through them to show everything quickly. Because he is trying to make a comeback as a director, George Huang seems to have lost some experience as a director, to direct his cast members properly. Because of this, some of them sometimes come across as a bit stiff, they seem to just read their lines or they still look into the camera lens.
