Director Joe Swanberg also directed Drinking Buddies (2013) and Digging for Fire (2015) which also starred Anna Kendrick. All three films were entirely improvised. There was no script, and the only things the actors and the crew had was a vague outline of the plot and the order in which certain events would take place.
Jeff (played by Joe Swanberg) and the landlady (Kris Rey) are married in real life. They have two children, one of them being Jude Swanberg, who played Jude (Jeff and Kelly's son) in the movie.
