Calling Guy Maddin’s 2024 film, Rumours, a convoluted and absurd satire would be an understatement, considering that the very appeal of the work is based on lowbrow comedy delivered through extremely unreal circumstances. The plot of this unique film follows the leaders of the G7 countries meeting at a convention of the forum to discuss some international crisis when they get lost in the woods and are haunted by mummified bodies from centuries ago. Universal Pictures has debuted a new trailer for the upcoming genre-blending satire on political ineptitude ‘Rumours.’

The movie follows the seven leaders of the world’s wealthiest democracies at the annual G7 summit, where they attempt to draft a provisional statement regarding a global crisis. These so-called leaders become spectacles of incompetence, contending with increasingly surreal obstacles in the misty woods as night falls and they realise they are suddenly alone.

Written and co-directed by Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, and Galen Johnson, the film stars Cate Blanchett as the German Chancellor, Charles Dance as the President of the United States, Nikki Amuka-Bird as the UK Prime Minister and Alicia Vikander as the President of the European Commission.

Directors Evan Johnson, Galen Johnson and Guy Maddin’s dark comedy Rumours portrays the situation of the inner workings of Western leadership in a time of crisis as a farcical satire, as comfortable played out on screen as perhaps on stage. As consistently sharp and witty as the dialogue is from its hapless leaders procrastinating over a joint statement of collective action in the middle of a German forest, it also is sobering, thought-provoking and timely in current unsettled times globally. Alicia Vikander will lead Rachel Rose’s debut film “The Last Day” alongside Victoria Pedretti and Wagner Moura.

The film, which wrapped production in New York in October, follows a writer and mother who confronts her lack of creative purpose and embarks on a journey of rediscovering herself after encountering figures from her past.

“The Last Day” is produced by Lucie Elwes, Rose, Mason Plotts, Pamela Koffler and Christine Vachon of Killer Films — the production company behind last year’s “Past Lives” and “May December” — as well as David Kaplan of Kaplan Morrison (“The Brutalist”). Canadian director Guy Maddin embraces absurdity. Along with his co-writers and directors Evan and Galen Johnson, Maddin has added to his surrealist oeuvre with Rumours, a comedy satirizing the G7 Summit. Bringing together a lauded cast led by Cate Blanchett playing the Chancellor of Germany, the film follows the seven world leaders as they get lost in the woods amidst a world catastrophe and simultaneously lose their minds.

As with any G7 Summit, the goal continues to be a vague “crisis” and an even vaguer “statement,” a cacophony of empty words, promises, and goals. The supporting cast are game, with Denis Ménochet shining as the President of France, and the filmmakers even choosing a very British Charles Dance to play the U.S. President. For theaters still in shock over the historic collapse of “Joker: Folie à Deux” (Warner Bros.), there’s optimism with the “Smile 2” opening of $23 million and Sean Baker’s strong award contender “Anora” (Neon) becoming the year’s best platform debut. (Baker’s also joining IndieWire’s Future of Filmmaking Summit November 2.)

In its third weekend, Todd Phillips’ film grossed under $2.2 million to drop another 69 percent and place sixth. With $56.4 million in, its domestic gross will fall short of $65 million. Bad for the studio and worse for the theaters that counted on another $135 million or so in box office revenue (and accompanying concessions).

With “Smile 2,” Parker Finn’s sequel to his 2022 horror success inched slightly ahead of the original’s opening weekend, which went on to gross $90 million. “Smile 2” will have a hard time replicating that, particularly with “Venom: The Last Dance” (Sony) debuting this Friday.

Rumours.Rumours (2024), codirected by Guy Maddin and brothers Evan and Galen Johnson, follows the world leaders at a G7 summit as they draft a provisional statement concerning an unspecified global crisis. The film finds Maddin operating in a different vein of artifice than the chaotic pastiches of early filmic techniques that characterize much of his previous work. In Rumours, high-key lighting blasts an antiseptic aura, and the babbly performances are urbane to the point of uncanniness (Charles Dance plays the US president with an unexplained British accent). However, the heads of state soon wander into more familiar Maddin territory. Stumbling through the woods, they encounter surreal and fleshy aberrations: self-pleasuring bog mummies, a gargantuan brain, et cetera. In a classic The Exterminating Angel (1962) conundrum, the figureheads drift through an inescapable liminal space, forced to abandon their mannered etiquettes and self-interrogate. Picture Raúl Ruiz’s The Territory (1981), if transposed into the sphere of international politics.

Guy Maddin didn’t know he was even on Cate Blanchett‘s radar until he saw her pick his film “My Winnipeg” out of the Criterion Closet back in 2022.

“It was a manipulative move. It was a cry for help!” Blanchett joked to IndieWire (and her peers) on the rooftop of the Jw Marriott on the Cannes Croisette back in May when their debut collaboration, “Rumours,” first premiered. She was joined on that day by Maddin and his co-directors, Evan and Galen Johnson, who’ve been chugging away with the singularly absurdist Canadian auteur on short films since 2015 and the feature “The Forbidden Room” in 2016. Their latest, “Rumours,” is a satirical slice of weirdness about seven nimwit world leaders who gather at a fictional G7 conference to draft a vaguely reassuring statement about an unnamed international crisis. Blanchett plays Hilda Orlmann, the Chancellor of Germany, channeling Angela Merkel in a blond bob and European faux-steeliness.

A collaboration between writers and directors Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, and Galen Johnson, the genre-bending dark comedy Rumours screened out of competition at the 77th Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, and now a wider audience will have the chance to watch the movie when it reaches theatres this Friday, October 18th. Despite the huge success of Damien Leone‘s “Terrifier 3,” Art the Clown will have to deal with the fact there is likely to be an even bigger horror sequel this weekend as Paramount Pictures releases “Smile 2.” It’s the follow-up to the 2022 hit horror movie from filmmaker Parker Finn, which opened with $22.6 million on its way to $105.9 million domestic and $217 million worldwide. It should go without saying that October is the perfect month for a horror release, but oddly, the original “Smile” opened on September 30, then had sustained legs with smaller week-to-week drops. Other horror franchises that have dominated the month of October include the “Saw” and “Paranormal Activity” movies, both which saw huge bumps in business with their second chapters.

The filmmakers behind the upcoming apocalyptic horror comedy film Rumours revealed how they balanced the movie’s comedy, and if they were inspired by any real-life political figures.

The upcoming movie, which stars Cate Blanchett (who recently starred in the not-so-well-received Borderlands film), gallows the seven leaders of world’s wealthiest democracies as they attend the annual G7 summit where they are drafting a big statement regarding a vague global crisis.

David Twohy’s Riddick 4: Furya, the latest chapter in the Vin Diesel-starring Riddick saga, has been awarded €2m in production support by Germany’s Fff Bayern fund for international feature films and series. It is the maximum amount that can be awarded to a single project.

A former sound engineer who wrote a memoir about working on the Fleetwood Mac album Rumors is suing the creators of the Broadway play Stereophonic for allegedly stealing copyrighted material from the book.

In the suit, filed in the Southern District Court of New York this week, Kenneth Caillat, the former sound engineer, and his co-author Steven Stiefel, allege that playwright David Adjmi stole copyrighted material from their 2012 book Making Rumours to create the play, which won the 2024 Tony Award for best play. They allege scenes in the play are “substantially similar” to passages from the book and say the premise of setting the play in the recording studio, with the audience having the point of view of the sound engineer, replicates the trajectory of the book.

“Utilizing the set in the recording studio, Stereophonic then presents a nearly identical story arc as Making Rumours, which Mr. Caillat described as “Ken’s Wild Ride.

Ken Caillat, the sound engineer and producer who worked on Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours, is suing the the hit Tony-winning play Stereophonic for allegedly ripping off his memoir, Making Rumours.

Published in 2012, Making Rumours found Caillat recounting, from his unique perspective in the control booth, the famously fraught creation of Rumours. Stereophonic, for its part, similarly tells the story of a band on the verge of pop stardom, making an album in 1976 amidst intra-band infighting and break-ups.

In the opening scene of the Rumours red band trailer, an archeologist unearths an Iron Age corpse, mummified with its severed penis hanging from its neck. As the summit host and German representative Hilda Orlmann, played by Cate Blanchett, describes the bog body, the G7 leaders in attendance can’t help but wince and give distasteful stares, with one global leader calling it “gruesome.” Following the ceremony, representatives of the world’s wealthiest democracies are stranded in the woods and chased by ancient bodies in a conference gone horribly wrong.

Cate Blanchett, Alicia Vikander, and Charles Dance star in the ensemble political film that centers on seven leaders of the world’s wealthiest democracies at the annual G7 summit, where they attempt to draft a provisional statement regarding a global crisis.

The official synopsis reads: “These so-called leaders become spectacles of incompetence, contending with increasingly surreal obstacles in the misty woods as night falls and they realize they are suddenly alone.”

Maddin, Evan Johnson, and Galen Johnson co-write and direct. The trio reunite after helming “The Forbidden Room” in 2015, with “Rumours” being billed as a combination of “comedy, apocalyptic horror, and swooning soap opera” per the logline.

Roy Dupuis, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Takehiro Hira, Denis Ménochet, Rolando Ravello, and Zlatko Buric also star.

“Rumours” premiered at Cannes and will go on to screen at TIFF and NYFF.

The 2024 Beyond Fest lineup has officially been unveiled, and fans are ready for a spooky good festival.

The genre film festival will open with the highly-anticipated reimagining of Stephen King’s “Salem’s Lot.” The novel was originally brought to the screen in 1979 with a two-part miniseries and a 2004 film.

Now, director Gary Dauberman is giving the horror classic his own twist, with Lewis Pullman starring. The feature had a delayed debut as Warner Bros. pushed its slated September 2022 until Spring 2023 before pulling the film from a U.S. theatrical release all together. “Salem’s Lot” will debut on Max October 3, and will have its world premiere on the big screen for Beyond Fest.

The festival will take place from September 25 to October 9.

Beyond Fest will close with Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s “Cloud.” Kurosawa will be in-person to launch a 7-film retrospective with the festival. A Guy Maddin retrospective will also take place...

She might be the greatest dramatic actress of her generation, but Cate Blanchett hasn’t scared away every comedic director. After all, “Rumours” helmers Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson sent her the script for their audacious satire.

“I think in a strange way, everything is funny,” Blanchett said during an interview at the Variety Toronto Film Festival Studio. “We are all absurd in some way, and we all think we’re the heroes and the tragedians of our own stories. Yeah. Sometimes you make decisions about what you can be involved in based on a lot of things that don’t have to necessarily do with choice. Sometimes it’s to do with whether it fits in with your kids’ holidays.”

“That’s how we got you?” Evan Johnson asked.

“Yes, I wanted to be in the forest at night for eight weeks in Budapest, and my kids were really happy about that!

The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) celebrated some of the most talented figures in film and entertainment at this year’s Tribute Awards. The star-studded event, held annually at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel, serves as both a gala dinner fundraiser for TIFF’s philanthropic efforts and a potential precursor for future award-season contenders.

Cate Blanchett touched down in Toronto for a wide-ranging talk about creative conflict on film sets, making big-budget films “risky,” and why her six-time Oscar-nominated film “Carol” struggled to find funding.

Blanchett, who is at TIFF supporting Alfonso Cuarón’s Apple TV+ show “Disclaimer” and Guy Maddin’s film “Rumours,” was welcomed at the Royal Alexandra Theatre with a standing ovation after fans lined up early to acquire rush tickets to the event.

Early in the conversation, Blanchett talked about her love for performing theater in front of a live audience, leading her to address the “streamers out there” that don’t release viewership data.

“We want the numbers,” Blanchett said. “Not so we know how much money is being made, but we want to know how many eyeballs have been on things that we have made. That’s greatly important.”

The strangest thing about Guy Maddin’s Rumours, co-directed with frequent collaborators Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson, might just be how relatively ordinary it feels. Eschewing the primitive style for which the Winnipeg filmmaker developed a following, as well as the nesting-doll structure of The Forbidden Room, his latest stages its genre-inflected political satire—one that’s equal parts Luis Buñuel and John Carpenter—in a surprisingly straightforward fashion. Maybe that’s because, despite still featuring a host of odd sights like a giant glowing brain in the woods, the film’s timely subject matter and heightened and portentous atmosphere reflects reality in an all too down-to-earth manner.

Rumours is set at a G7 summit, that oft-protested gathering of leaders of some of the world’s wealthiest democracies, during which they put on a show of global unity, if nothing else, given the summit’s lack of verifiable, concrete, real-life outcomes.
