Lovers Ferrando and Guglielmo boast of their girlfriends' constancy in fidelity in front of the learned Don Alfonso, who in turn bets within a short matter of time the girls will betray their supposed lovers. He plots for the boys to be shipped off to war, while truly they will return in disguises, seeking to tempt each other's girlfriend to infidelity. With the help of his sidekick, Despina, Don Alfonso sets masterful scenarios ensuring Fiordiligi and Dorabella prove unfaithful to Ferrando and Guglielmo. Just when the lads in full disguise are about to marry the others' girlfriend...the battle march approaches and Ferrando and Guglielmo slip out to take off their disguises. They return and inquire what the lovers had been doing, and what exactly a notary and a marriage contract are doing on the table. The show ends with the women apologetic, while the men are left heartbroken and forever untrusting.
