Stories about moral conundrums and the slippery side of justice and integrity are universally attractive and tent to travel well from one side to the other of the world. It's what happened to Herman Koch's novel “The Dinner”, an international bestseller translated in many languages and adapted into four films, Dutch, Italian, American and finally a Korean version directed by Hur Jin-ho with a different title, “A Normal Family”.
A Normal Family is screening at Udine Far East Film Festival
The film's tone of voice is immediately established when we witness a horrific road rage between two cars, ending in one of the drivers being killed and his 6-yer-old daughter left critically injured. The culprit, a rich and arrogant kid with a powerful father, will likely get away with it, as his case is given to the capable hands of rampant and expensive attorney Jae-wan (Suo Kyung-gu). Coincidentally, the...

Four years ago, before Covid turned everything upside down, a new Asian masterpiece world premiered virtually unnoticed at the Toronto Film Festival. That film was “A Sun,” a multifaceted Taiwanese family saga from director Chung Mong-Hong that seemed to shift and evolve as it unfolded, challenging what audiences thought they knew about the characters. Tucked away in TIFF’s overcrowded (and under-promoted) Contemporary World Cinema section, the film easily slid under the radar.
Toronto programmers weren’t about to make the same mistake with “A Normal Family,” a film of similar force from South Korea, giving it a coveted Gala spot. Director Hur Jin-ho’s complex, complacency-shattering moral study boasts a heightened yet easily relatable premise, and strong potential to play well around the globe. Like “A Sun,” the movie comes roaring out of the gate with a shocker of an opening scene: An aggro jerk in a blood-red Maserati...

Eva Maria Daniels, producer of independent features “Reality,” “What Maisie Knew” and “Joe Bell,” died on June 30 in London, after battling cancer. She was 43.
Throughout her career, Daniels maintained longstanding partnerships with producer Riva Marker and A24, worked as a producer for The Mill and Company 3 and served as a consultant for the Icelandic Film Fund.
“Eva died on the same terms as she lived. She played her cards close to her chest. She didn’t seek recognition when she had success. She didn’t seek pity when she suffered. I will miss her friendship greatly, but mostly I will miss seeing what she would have done next,” wrote director Börkur Sigthorsson on Facebook.
Most recently, Daniels executive produced the Berlin Film Festival selection and Max feature, “Reality,” which stars Sydney Sweeney and was directed by Tina Satter.
“Eva was hyper intelligent and had a gift for seeking out and supporting artists.

It’s a well-known fact that if you are feeling nervous, especially at a social event, having a couple of drinks can easily help you to calm down. Nonetheless, if you have no self-control, you can run the risk of drinking too much, saying too much, and making a far bigger mess. Few films have captured the tumultuous and heady mix of social anxiety coupled with alcohol dependency as well as Marco Lawson’s The Dinner (Middagen), a Danish film that feels in the spirit of classic Dogme 95 cinema, bringing to mind Thomas Vinterberg’s Another Round and Festen. Impressed by this uncomfortable depiction of social anxiety, we talked to Lawson about Danish drinking culture,...

Danai Gurira (The Walking Dead) is also in talks to star.
Adam Wingard is directing the film and although we don’t have any plot details, we know that the Godzilla and King Kong will face off with each other. As for Hall’s character, that info remains unknown.
It’s going to be cool to see how they end up bringing the worlds of Godzilla and Kong together. When these two giant creatures collide, I hope that it turns out to be a great adventure film that will entertain fans.

A trailer has been released for a new serial killer thriller called The Clovehitch Killer, which tells the story of a young man who starts to suspect his dad is a serial killer after coming across some unsettling evidence while rummaging through his dad’s shed.
The movie looks like it’s going to be pretty intense as the boys dad starts to suspect his son is on to him. I imagine that this story isn’t going to end well for anyone. The movie stars Charlie Plummer (from Lean on Pete, The Dinner, All the Money in the World) as the boy Tyler and Dylan McDermott as his dad. Here’s the synopsis:
Tyler Burnside (Charlie Plummer) is a Boy Scout, a volunteer at his local church, and the dutiful son of an upstanding, community leader dad (Dylan McDermott). Only one thing troubles the quiet Kentucky town he lives...

First-time director and long-time producer Marc Turtletaub, with a screenplay co-written by Oren Moverman and Polly Mann, based on Natalia Smirnoff's film Rompecabezas, sets up his protagonist's life with an elegant and surprising opening sequence that makes us understand in a flash the dynamics between Agnes (Kelly Macdonald) and her nearest and dearest and propels us into the personal riddles to be explored. So clearly the focus of the story, Agnes resembles even earlier movie heroines whose names became titles of the films - Kitty Foyle or Mildred Pierce may come to mind.

How far will the new American aristocracy go to protect its privileges? Oren Moverman’s intense four-way war of wills is sourced from a novel but shapes up as an intense stage piece in a chi-chi restaurant interrupted by flashbacks and other stylistic flourishes. The acting foursome is excellent, with Steve Coogan a standout as a truly disturbed character. Four adults debate their sons’ high crimes and misdemeanors over designer cuisine.

Directed by Michael Winterbottom, “Spain” is the third film chronicling actors Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon’s culinary adventures through Europe (the previous installments took them through England and Italy). Playing (a version of) themselves, the two real life friends consume six incredible meals while trading barbs and Roger Moore impressions, as seen in the trailer below. The film also includes plenty of Spain-specific references, including a memorable homage to “Don Quixote.”

One of the very best actors of his generation, Richard Gere has appeared in over 50 films in a career that spans four decades. Famed for his roles in such classics as An Officer and A Gentleman, Pretty Woman and Chicago, the Golden Globe winner has taken on some smaller films in recent years that have gained him a new audience such as Time Out of Mind, Arbitrage and his new film, Norman, which is released in UK cinemas this week.
The film tells the story of Norman Oppenheimer (Gere), a small time “fixer” who becomes close to a young Israeli politician. Over the course of three years, their relationship changes and when the politician becomes a hugely influential world leader, Norman’s life (and his lies) begin to unravel…

Netflix has unveiled the first look at their new show Ozark, which debuts on the subscription service later this summer – you can check out the first trailer and debut images below!
The new show is directed and executive produced by Jason Bateman (The Family Fang, Office Christmas Party), who also stars in the show as Marty Bird, a financial planner who relocates with his family from a Chicago suburb to Missouri Ozarks, a summer resort community. The move has to do with Marty also being a top money launderer and after a job backfires, the second biggest Mexican drug cartel comes for them.
Bateman will direct half the episodes of the 10-episode series and marks a return to television series directing for the actor, who previously directed episodes of Arrested Development amongst others, as well as 2013’s Bad Words and 2015’s The Family Fang, which co-starred Nicole Kidman and Christopher Walken.

As specialized distributors head to Cannes, Eleanor Coppola’s French valentine “Paris Can Wait” (Sony Pictures Classics) scored with arthouse moviegoers. It’s only the fourth 2017 limited release to break the increasingly rare $20,000 per-theater-average mark.
These days, movies with older audience appeal are sustaining the market — and will likely form the core demo for similar available new films at Cannes. Eleanor Coppola (“Apocalypse Now” documentary “Heart of Darkness”) makes her narrative film debut at 81 with her semi-autobiographical first screenplay, starring Diane Lane as the wife of a self-involved film producer (Alec Baldwin).
New York also saw a handful of other small but still promising initial results, led by Cate Blanchett stunt-theater piece “Manifesto” (Film Rise), Israeli marriage story “The Wedding Plan” (Roadside Attractions) and “Stefan Zweig: Farewell to Europe” (First Run).
